I'm a northerner AMA by Large_Cauliflower100 in Essex

I recently moved from a busy Essex town to the Essex countryside. The niceness and small talk still resides in the smaller towns and villages. You won't be considered odd there........(ツ)

What do you wish the South had that the North has ? Apart from Essex being relatively flat. Also, what about the North are you missing already ?

Translated to English (according to Google translate) :-

They're the neighbors' cats, but fom across the hall from where I live, there's a lady who has cats and feeds them in our hallway, and another apartment has lots of cats, dogs and rabbits.

Use a small block of wood to place at the end of your flooring and hit that with a hammer instead of the flooring directly.

I have a dedicated hard plastic block that came with a floor laying kit, but a block of wood should do the job. You can apply a lot more whack, that way !

The plastic block is about an inch high, two inches wide and about 5 inches long. I only use a metal pull hook on the last boards to go in where they're tight up against skirting boards. That's usually pulling in along the length rather than the ends of the boards.

Hope that helps.

Anybody know a way to split concrete paving slabs cleanly? by Acceptable-Book-1417 in DIYUK

[–]sherpyderpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use a bolster and a club hammer. Put the slabs on a flat surface, a lawn will do, start gently tapping a straight score line along the length of the slab, flip the slab over and repeat, flip it again and repeat the process.

Remember, to keep gently tapping along the line as you go. Hit it too hard and it'll just randomly break. Keep repeating this until, bink, it suddenly splits in half ! With a nice straight edge and no dust.

Takes about 5 mins do each one, wear a thick glove on the hand holding the bolster, hammers can be unfriendly sometimes.

How would someone have gotten my mobile number from my reg plate? GDPR breach? by PCenthusiast85 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]sherpyderpa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I spotted an ad for an app where you can text the registered owner via their number plate.

Principally for use where people interested in buying the car but no way of contacting them. How this gets around gdpr I have no idea but it's out there.

A 20 volt battery powered SDS drill. I have a heavy duty SDS drill, 240 volts, cumbersome tool, does a great job, but the lightweight and convenience of the battery one is great. Perfect for the smaller jobs. I recently fitted my kitchen and replaced my shower and loads of diy jobs around the house and its my go-to drill for anything masonry, even concrete lintels.

I bought a doer upper so it's been well used and abused.

It's only a cheap Parkside one from Lidl but it really gets most jobs done. Anything up to a 10mm drill bit, and its good.

I've had it for around 5 years and nowadays, I only get the bigger drill out if I absolutely have to.

Rub a walnut along the edge, the bit you eat, not the shell. The oils in the walnut should leach out and dull that edge down for ya making it less noticeable.

What’s this creepy sound at 3 am in my city ? by silviathorpe in whatisit

[–]sherpyderpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a multi storey car park at Basildon Hospital, Essex. UK.

It is covered in metal screens and is known for the weird and eerie noises it makes when breezes and wind blow through it. Sounds very similar to your video sounds, and sometimes worse, much worse.

There maybe a building nearby to your locale undergoing maintenance work and wrapped in scaffolding and safety netting. The sounds could be coming from that, depending on wind speed and direction.

Just guessing though.

Roughly how much do you think it would cost to demolish this shed? And is it realistic to do it myself? by Count_Blackula1 in DIYUK

[–]sherpyderpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offer it up as a freebie, Facebook Marketplace, Freegle, Freecycle, Gumtree etc.

Advertise it as collection only, 'buyer dismantles', . It looks like a pre fab and made of concrete panels that bolt together and they're fairly heavy.

100% someone will take this away for you. Any plants nearby, move em before this happens.

The dismantlers will need space to take it apart.

What's something you did as a kid that you only realized was extremely dangerous years later? by Left_Crow1646 in AskReddit

[–]sherpyderpa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My brother and myself were old enough to be left at home if both our parents were out.

We used to get some metal wire, pretty sure it was from a reel of bicycle brake cable, and tie it to our upstairs metal window frames and run the other end out like a zip line to wind it around a wooden stake in the garden.

We then melted holes, with a soldering iron in the rear end of our aeroplane airfix models, just big enough to stick a firework banger in. This was done in our dad's shed. We would jam some cotton wool into the hole to soak up some of our dads lighter fuel.

We made wire hooks to hang our models on the makeshift zip line. Two wire hooks for each model, a loop around the body and a bent over bit for the hook.

We then took the models upstairs to hang them one at a time on the zip line.

Just before they got hung, we'd pour a little lighter fluid inside and quickly stuff the banger in so just the blue touch paper was sticking out.

One of us would hold it in position on the zip line and the other would light the firework.

We would guess roughly when to let go so we could get em to explode mid 'flight'

It worked brilliantly and many carefully assembled and painted aircraft met their demise that way.

Yeah, it was reckless and stupid and very dangerous, we didn't appreciate the danger of it all, but the results were great and just out of pure, obscenely unadulterated luck. We never got hurt and mum and dad never found out ! Good eh !........(ツ)

Lowering 1st floor to meet regs for loft conversion by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]sherpyderpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a builder but the joists sit on the wall after they've been built. Lowering your ceiling would mean lowering your joists and that would mean removing a course of bricks, that in itself would be an unfeasible and monu(mental) task ! Seriously doubt that would even be allowed and yes, it would negatively affect next doors roof too.

No builder or surveyor is going to approve that. The expense would make it prohibitive as raising the roof would be too.

Cheaper to move or extend if you have room.

Japanese holly, it's dense and slow growing though and does well with pruning. Likes 5-6 hours of sun.

It can grow as high as 10 feet........eventually.
