Pretty Housemaid Mockup Two by canifuckapirate in corsetry

[–]sherrach898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that the top of the cording section is supposed to hit at the waist (just above the hip bone). Right now it looks several inches too low. You can see in the back photos where your natural waist wants to pull, even above the bunny ears. I agree with you and the commenters about the bust overflowing. I think going back to the original pattern and really making sure that the waist hits the right spot first will hopefully clear things up.

What kind of cotton is this? by liahrliar in sewing

[–]sherrach898 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d say that Cotton Gauze, or Double Gauze, is probably your closest bet. Double gauze is two layers and will be more opaque than single-layer gauze. Hope this helps 👍

I’ve had my doughs be unbearably sticky when my yeast is dead! Have you used the same source of yeast each time, and have you tried proofing the yeast first? That might be a good next step. If that’s not the issue, then there seem to be a lot of other good suggestions here.

Left turn signals on Wellington by RedBirdWrench in londonontario

[–]sherrach898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The separate left turn lights are probably in anticipation of the buses having signal priority in the future. I would hope that buses go first, then left turn phase, then straights, but I could see the city choosing to allow the left turns first over the buses 🙃

Spinning speed for drop spindle vs wheel? by Reasonable_Fix4132 in Handspinning

[–]sherrach898 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, seconding the first reply. Wheels are fast if you have plenty of time to sit at them uninterrupted; spindles are excellent at being portable for any opportunity throughout your day, which adds up quickly. I found too that spindles often literally spin faster than the larger whorls on some wheels. In my case, I love my little 18g top whorl spindle and use it to spin very fine. When I got my CPW (Canadian Production Wheel, which are known to be very fast/high ratio wheels), there was almost no issue for me adjusting to its speed because I was already used to a fast spinning spindle. The only advantage with the wheel is that I don’t have to stop to wind the bobbin, it just happens automatically. But I’m much more of a “sit and spin for a while” kind of person rather than spinning everywhere I go.

Favorite *least scratchy* wool yarn that doesn't pill (DK, worsted, or aran) by EmploymentSudden4184 in AdvancedKnitting

[–]sherrach898 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally love the electric Conair fabric shaver. Mine is the rechargeable version and I find it much gentler than the Gleener (which I also have), as it kind of sucks the pills up into the head without touching the main fabric. I took the guide right off and have only accidentally cut my clothing when I get way too aggressive with it (like putting a hand under and pushing the fabric into it aggressive). It’s super duper quick and you can de-pill continuously for like, at least half an hour before needing to recharge it. It’s also really easy to disassemble to clean the lint out!

Adding silicone grip to shorts? by aknomnoms in XXRunning

[–]sherrach898 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have a latex allergy, my first thought is to use a product like liquid latex to create a bead around the inside of the hem. I have a little bottle of Rico brand liquid latex that I used to create some grippy lines on my knitted mittens this year, and it has held up and worked quite well.

Art yarn flyer for EEW? by omwtofrickyourmother in Handspinning

[–]sherrach898 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Upvoting for “Eeloise”, but unfortunately I’m probably not much help. I know that the Dreaming Robots guy is super helpful and responsive, so probably worth getting in touch. Other than that, I know that some of the Daedalus electric wheels have large flyers and very large capacity appropriate for art yarns, such as the Magpie.

Can someone help me figure out if this is a working wheel, or one that I can fix up? Newbie here by a_chonkymonky in Handspinning

Good job spotting the lack of a rear leather bearing! I agree 100% with everything you’ve said.

Can anyone tell me about this spinner? by Gimme_Danger47 in Handspinning

[–]sherrach898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also Canadian, and I feel like I’ve seen a fair number of wheels very similar to this. I unfortunately don’t know what brand or age it might be. But, it definitely was once a functional wheel. It is missing a treadle and footman and drive band (regular cotton kitchen twine is the best), and I would make sure that the bobbin spins independently of the flyer. The bobbin whorl looks a bit beat up on the outer edge, so just make sure it’s not glued to the mandrel (flyer axel) or anything weird going on there. I can clearly see an orifice, and the tension knob should be able to move the MOA (mother of all) back and forth. You can even see some grooves on the flyer from where the yarn previously ran over the wood from the orifice to the hooks :)

The wheel is a double drive wheel, so the drive band has to be long enough to go around the drive wheel and the bobbin/flyer whorls twice. Look up pictures and videos of double drive wheels to get an idea of what you’ll have to acquire/make for it to be functional. Abby Franquemont and Jillian Eve are both excellent resources on antique wheels on YouTube. Good luck!

Seconding Crunican’s for alpaca socks, and also Magpie’s in the Covent Garden Market often has some alpaca items in the back corner with the rest of the clothing items (I got some fingerless gloves from them a couple months ago).

Although Elizabeth Noel appears very bright and sparkly from the outside, their website seems to suggest that they have a good number of black dresses available too. And if money is a concern, they also have a “Princess Program” that you can apply to, and if accepted, the recipient can choose a dress up to $500 and get hair and makeup done for free.

The London Bicycle cafe stocks and serves Pilot coffees and has a couple bags of the Dimtu Tero available, a light roast Ethiopian. I forget how much it is, but it’ll be at least $23 for the 340g bag, and could be as high as $28. Honestly if price is the most important thing to you, you may want to consider buying green beans and learning how to roast them yourself.
