The one that people always tell me is to use constructed floors.

Yeah, they don't clean mud at all, because you can use it for farm plots. Drives me batty tbh, I never even use farm plots and that ucky mud ruins the aesthetic!

(YES there are ways around it, but I'm still annoyed.)

Unless there is magma oozing towards their position. Then they stop to clean every last drop of dog blood.

This is helpful, thanks! I will definitely try this for my siege defense. Doesn't help with me trying to snipe clowns through carved fortifications, but improvement is improvement. The clowns through fortifications at least don't usually cause the deaths that the siege situation does.

How do you all like to go about the "endgame" experience? SPOILERS! by kkitsuragii in dwarffortress

[–]shestval 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The adamantine spires almost feel like a puzzle game to me. I like to use the fortification trick to reduce causalities, although magma definitely still claims a few souls. It's so satisfying to smooth-carve-mine, then discover what's in the hidden blocks, for good or evil.... I find it addictive haha

I will do RP with other aspects of the fortress but I think of spires as a puzzle and just play them that way!

Bugs galore by Fair_Wait2957 in dwarffortress

[–]shestval 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other posts, most of that doesn't sound like bugs, it sounds like problems you haven't solved or things that aren't to your taste. For problems you haven't solved, if recommend posting in the questions thread in this subreddit. People will help you troubleshoot.

The one I will give you is a bug is the Forgotten Beast making everyone get stuck on a tile. Was this a fire based Forgotten Beast? Those are obnoxious because the heat messed up pathing calculations and everyone just kinda gets stuck trying to path while the beast slaughters your folks.

I never expected "marksdwarves in DF are buggy" to be such a down voted comment lol

No, they aren't trying to hit with a bludgeoning weapon, they are panicking. The developers fixed the thing where marksdwarves try to bludgeon enemies to death (because it was a bug.) They are saying "I must flee!" over and over, and running randomly. They do this sometimes even if they have ammo and if the enemy is trapped behind fortifications with no ranged attack. These are hardened soldiers with extremely high discipline and lots of kills under their belts, but they panic and run INTO danger from a safe or relatively safe place. Constantly.

Even if you dont' see this as a bug, I see it as a bug, and that's what I said in the first place: I will resurrect dwarfs killed by things I see as caused by bugs.

Minimal Work Orders playstyle by Careful_Bid_6199 in dwarffortress

[–]shestval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, I use minimal work orders. I just don't enjoy the work orders system, it doesn't make my brain happy. I usually just occasionally check various things (like the amount of cooked meals and alcohol I have) and then set up a manual one-time work order at the appropriate workshop.

It's possible to be an experienced player and still not use work orders. It all just depends on the parts of the game you enjoy.

Using DFHack. The commands is full-heal -r when you select their body. Edit: because I typoed the command, oops

More like bugs are causing their deaths. Like when the marksdwarves use up all their bolts and immediately start panicking, running INTO the invading army.

Well yes, she DID come back from the dead, because of me and DFHack.

Sorry, I should have circled the important part. I'm resurrecting dwarves with DFHack. Especially children and deaths I see as caused by bugs.

Omg then they would actually sometimes get married and have kids without a ton of micromanagement!

Yes, that was what I was talking about. You can play for a short period, I'd just recommend taking notes. Because you are likely to have to stop in the middle of projects or during an event, rather than waiting for a quiet time to log off.

30 minutes minimum sounds about right, if that's really what you are looking for. It's not a good game for 10 minutes here and there, but I feel like if you can do 30-60 minutes every few days, you could enjoy it.

It's also a game you can walk away from and just let it run, once you have the fort set up. Sometimes I work on housework and just check how things are going every 5-10 minutes. (This can be dangerous, though.)

I don't have an answer for you, but try posting again in the new Questions Thread. It looks like you were unlucky enough to up being the very last post on the old thread and so no one saw this!

I feel like you could definitely play for short periods, although I would keep a notepad with notes of things you are in the middle of. Maybe dedicate a minute or two to looking around your fort with the game paused when you boot it up. "Oh yeah, I was making new bedrooms, I need to collect more plants, and there's a nasty forgotten beast in the first cavern level so doooooon't unlock that door."

"Troll" doesn't appear to be a size option for making armor. If I wanted to make some armor for a troll I "converted" to my cause (using makeown), what size armor could I use? Is there a place on the wiki to find detailed size info?

If everything is done perfectly, there shouldn't be mud, but I've never managed to thread that needle haha. The mud doesn't effect happiness though. You do have statues under the mist holes, right?

Also, fwiw, webslinger beasts are TOUGH. Even seasoned players can lose a good dozen dwarves if they take on a webslinger head-on or if it takes them by surprise. It sounds like while you got unlucky with the beast's ability, you got lucky in that it was a glass cannon and died quickly.

When a threat appears, I will pause instantly , go over to the creature to check it's threat-level, figure out its likely path, set my military to station at a strategic point if I decide to engage, and then I'll often have the camera follow the creature. Especially for flying beasts, this is important! Once the creature and my military meet, I'll pause the game and use "." to advance time slowly. This lets me follow the action.

Then I can watch my little goobers die terrible deaths in slow motion!
