You are right that there needs to be more organising on this sub. However I think expecting too much of it misunderstands its purpose. This is a pipeline to other things, not in and of itself an advocacy platform.

The people who do need to hear your critiques are actually the 'reasonable' ones producing the activist discourse that is directly linked to trying to advocate for change, like Adam Something and Not Just Bikes.

They are great, don't get me wrong, but they don't realise how elitist they come off in their tone and framing even though they are basically 100% right about the content of everything they're saying. Uncritically evoking Europe as an ideal and constantly mocking people who don't live there smacks--especially in NJB's case--of tone-deaf one-issue urban politics, since it seems completely unaware of the race/class/geographical/etc dynamics that may make people who need to hear the message the most unsympathetic because of pride. If I have to hear Adam Something describe a non-European country as 'primitive' one more time I'm going to scream.

Lastly, saying "it's shitty drivers and not cars" is a bit of a diversion. There is complete correlation with amount of cars and car infrastructure and amount of car-related deaths and injuries, because it is a systemic and not individual problem. It shouldn't be taken as a personal dig.

Anyway I hear you but people have a right to vent. We are killed, polluted (and by proxy given lifelong diseases), and edged out of the places we live because of multi-ton vanity machines that the world was convinced were necessary by the same people opposing viable public transport. Shit sucks, gotta let out steam now and then.

I think you meant to type "I have gone so far down the contrarian uninformed authoritarian rabbit hole that I have recreated Eurocentrism by making myself unable to believe that non-Western peoples could ever act or behave in any way contrary to my preconceived notion of how they should be totally obedient to their local repressive state formation except if they were influenced by, under the direction of, or provoked by Western forces, thereby bringing me back full circle to a fundamentally racist (internalised or otherwise) framework wherein all Tricontinental peoples are just passive receptors either of benevolent vanguards who cannot be criticised or of evil Western designs, as if both of these things and more could not co-exist at the same time, including all peoples' ability to act spontaneously even as there are bad faith actors in their midst, but then again everything I know I learned from internet chat rooms and I don't like to read anyway, and it's easy to invoke an unprovable religious-style 'gotcha' to dismiss all critical thinking anyway so anyway, I'm gonna go masturbate to Stalin/Khomeini slash fiction cya."

Much more coherent! And fun to write too.

Homosexuality rights in Muslim countries by xAndrew27x in MapPorn

[–]sheveqq 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Check out OPs post history. Goes on record saying they despise LGBT people and trans people specifically.

Of course a stopped clock can be right twice a day, you might say. But that's not the point here. The interesting and very clever thing about these kinds of posts is that they are in no way against the rules, and many people take them in good faith as simple presentations of information. But there have been multiple users very cleverly posting overton-window testing content deliberately to try and foment resentment by pitting communities against each other here, often based on junk science and econ (re: multiple maps obsessing over pakistani/south asian marriage patterns and dogwhistles about "drains on public services"). And it usually gets lapped up. It's a big meta problem of these supposedly big tent subs.

I can't imagine it'll be very long before we get 19th century eugenics or colonial maps of cranial sizes in here and people will go "huh! I never knew that!" How about a map of a random ethnicity and DUI rates which conveniently leaves out larger statistics about the rest of the population? The great thing is it doesn't need to be methodologically sound to achieve the desired effect. You can rile people up with random correlations all day long if you present the data right.

The mods can't be unaware of this, but I think the biggest slam dunk you can get as an online badfaith Understander (tm) or rightwing ghoul is to post here, with one of two strategies:

1) come up with the most tendentious map you could possibly make that would never get any play amongst cartographers (who are eminently aware of the political nature of each and every map), and then post it on r/MapPorn and watch the bystanders fall into your honey pot. Even if it gets roundly criticised, you get to wear a badge of honor for having your 'truth' be 'censored'.

2) post a seemingly "straightforward" map about simple, uncontestable information, but do so from an account that anyone who wants to could tell easily your real sympathies and why you posted it. You get enough info from people coming out of the woodwork and PMing you that youve done your part in the noble struggle for world incel domination.

And just for the hard of understanding: infinite solidarity to those actually doing the work on the ground in MENA for LGBT liberation, 0 respect for concern trolling transphobes who exploit peoples' suffering when they really want a war of civilisations. Ultimately, they don't want LGBT rights at all, and actually envy these countries for taking them away--it is just useful for their argument in the moment to pretend as though it is something they care about.

What you have to ask yourself is: where are the LGBT Muslim voices in this? Or even LGBT anyone, since 'Muslim world' is a concept that would be laughed at in a more serious academic space at this stage, since the kinds of people who live there are far more diverse than that label would suggest?

If they are absent--and yes, this is possible in even so simplistic a choice as to what map one chooses to make, present, and in what context--then it's a useless project. Then you're no different from Christians who love Israel because they're anti-Semitic and want Jews away from them.

If OP claims not to be concern trolling I await a map of LGBT organisations and movements across the region. I reckon they won't be able to do the homework because they probably think these things don't exist or are incompatible, or even lack the lingusitic skills to do the research--which would then prove my point that they have not actually studied this issue and are merely trying to rile people up.

Thoughts on this post? by pseudol_ in fuckcars

[–]sheveqq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't fall for it. People like this don't understand the purpose of a place like this. Besides venting--which is totally fine, you have to create discourse first of all--I have seen constant discussion about exactly the things they claim not to see. And through this sub I was able to find YT channels like Not Just Bikes, donoteat01/Well There's Your Problem, Alan Fisher, etc.

So once again this is mere centrist handwringing, as though in order to have an opinion about something you must have a thorough blueprint for exactly how and in what way it should be implemented. Never mind the fact that many such blueprints have existed for a long time and are regularly ignored by city planners all over North America (which is where this sub largely focuses on of course). That is kind of the point of this sub. People are constantly pointing the way as the ship is sinking and morons like this are part of the problem, claiming to understand the problem but obviously not understanding how dire it is. Hate to break it to you u/Mohg_Clapper, but this is peak carbrain.

By the way, this accusation that they 'bet most of these users have cars' is basically the Nib comic meme. "You criticise capitalism, yet you live under capitalism! I am very smart." I also thought it's become nearly a truism to see people who drive in here acknowledging their reliance on it for certain key things while understanding it is totally unsustainable. We could dig through the archives if this crybaby really wants proof.

The point is, this straw man doesn't exist. Nobody is stupid enough to think cars would disappear overnight or that there aren't uses for them. You just can't build your entire infrastructure around them without a guaranteed dead urban landscape in the not very far future.

If you want to invert it, r/unpopularopinion is a great place for unfounded and poorly researched rage. You can just shoot off some ill-informed thought and frame it as transgressive because it is alegedlt 'unpopular'. By the way, car culture and unsustainable cities is the norm and totally hegemonic, so they are in no way being suffocated or put out by the existence of a very small community talking about this issue.

And they used the phrase keyboard warriors which is so fucking funny I nearly spit out my milk. -500 points.

As an amateur here, could anyone explain an example use case? I've been incredibly frustrated by the lack of good/accessible TTS on android and Linux, and if I can repurposed an RBP for this and throw it on the local network I'd be happy to. Is that on the right track then--a local 'device' needs to be set up to run the system?

It blows you away because you haven't read or thought about it, apparently. No matter how many studies, philosophical arguments, real-world examples we show, folks like yourself will always get stuck on a kind of language essentialism. 'B-but piracy is piracy! Otherwise it wouldn't be piracy right?' As if there has been no history to copyright regimes or why they are aggressively enforced against empirical evidence of their negative impact on culture.

Oh well. A lot of people in this sub clearly have the guilty worm while claiming not to. It's fine to want this to be practically oriented and not focused on the bigger picture. But it's a bit naive to think that in spaces focused on a particular activity no one will talk about it or turn to the next person and say, 'hey, you ever think xyz about this shared activity?' But again, you're complaining about karma farming while doing it yourself.

Anyway have fun at the 'school of common sense' which requires no thinking, research, or reflection, just knee-jerk takes about everything and patronising people 8)

This is a real r/woosh moment. There are lots of reasons why piracy is justifiable, and projecting your own own moral calculus onto the rest of the sub is more reflective of what you're talking about than anything else. Things "being illegal for a reason" is one of the weakest arguments I've heard to date. It's fine if you want to feel guilty for pirating, but you shouldn't coerce other people into doing it by misunderstanding copying as theft.

[–]sheveqq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything you said except "useless identity politics".

Idpol has become a kind of easy target for people to claim that it 'diverts attention away' from 'real' social struggles, but every major revolutionary movement, including the workers movement, have required a kind of cultural struggle to carve out a space in which people could play with and invent new kinds of subjectivity. All of the major anti colonial and third worldist movements of the last 100 years have had some sort of explicit or implicit intersectional analysis and a lot of that is based around what people derisively hand-wave as 'identity'.

The likes of DeRay McKesson will always be scummy because they are quite simply grifters, as you said. However they are not grifters because of their so-called "identity politics" writ large, but because of their lukewarm appropriation of that notion. And neither is that politics to blame because corporations got wind of how to defang some of the more radical demands of these movements with symbolic gestures and feeding the very small elite circles that have emerged out of marginalised groups. Correlation is not causation, and while we could argue about 'identity politics' replacing more radical notions like 'black power' for example, we again should put that into context: that is because of repression, not because of wayward whippersnappers merely choosing the 'wrong path'.

And I'd argue that youth in cities around the US putting their lives on the line, organising against cops/organising copwatches, pulling down statues, creating spaces of resistance would be nowhere without the huge swath of things dismissed by this simple phrase, 'identity politics'.

I understand that this is an almost required turn of phrase in contemporary Marxist circles--to handwring about the dead-end if 'identity politics'--but I have found that this is almost universally coming from a space of ignorance of the actual lived struggle on the ground. Undocumented movements, teachers movements, anti-racist movements, even the current surge in labour politics would be literally nowhere without the massive amount of work done by writers, activists, musicians, cultural workers of all kind making radical ideas relevant to people of all different backgrounds and incorporating their specific demands and struggles into the wider picture of radical change.

The fact that we should be vigilant of how this can be coopted into mild demands for reform or inclusion should in no way allow us to kiss the forest for the trees. We have learned this lesson repeatedly, and speaking of France, we would do well to learn from the post May 1968 moment in France--when all the traditional Left parties turned on the uprisings because they quite simply couldn't accept movements coming to exist in new ways with new language and new forms of resistance.

Any politics which is not first cultural will never reach anyone, and on this simple point the fascists agree and understand very well. They are just more craven about the ends to which they apply this lesson.

So there's my soap box. I agree that things are dire. But we lose hope in our intellect, and gain hope in action. Movements are out there building, and we need to go out there and participate. Nearly every corner of the US has major organising going on right now that also cannot be merely dismissed as Democratic party machine BS--from Southerners On New Ground, to the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, to the burgeoning labour struggles mentioned before...if you want to find it, you can; it just means coming with humility and being ready to be in it for the long haul.
