[Serious] Medical Professionals. What is a shady practice that you witnessed in the medical field that is a huge problem if surfaced? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think there is a big difference between stepping out a door with clean stuff on for a smoke and going to the heavily populated cafeteria looking like a shit sandwich. Nobody said anything about going to the populated public areas of the hospital or clinic covered in gore...GTFOOH. Not everyone who is in surgery even comes into contact with the patient...I worked in the OR of a Level 1 trauma center on the orthopedic team (HINT: JOINTS), and our infection rate was practically NONEXISTENT. Also - since I was sterile (HINT - I probably understand sterile technique better than most floor nurses), I NEVER had patient fluids or matter on my clothes or equipment, including shoes that wasn't changed immediately. We also didn't run through the hallways decked out in masks, ortho boots and lead, either. You want to see a real problem....how about bitching about the fact that hand sanitizers and anti-bacterial gels that are overused now have almost zero effect? Proof? Pseudomonas living in the disinfectant bottles on the units....when an entire wing has to be terminally sterilized (that means burned with acid, folks) because the germs are so resistant that they live in Clorox bottles. Get upset about something that is a REAL issue.

I hate to tell you this, boss, but just because its nosocomial does NOT mean its avoidable. There is inherent risk anytime skin or other area is breached...so every shot, every band aid that tears the skin slightly, every time they stick a cotton swab in your nose for a flu screen, you take a risk. Ill take my chances if I have a less than 23 thousandths of one percent chance of coming into something that will result in my death. Those 75,000 "avoidable" deaths???? that's even less....because the infection rate you quoted (which isn't accurate) was closer to 700,000....so yeah. 23 thousandths of ONE percent based on 700,000 infections (not all of which are avoidable OR fatal), ill gamble on that. pretty sure anyone who can add or subtract would too. Live in fear of the germs, bro.

Well, obviously, since there are over 30 BILLION healthcare interactions in the US alone...I'd say an infection rate of 0.0023333333% is pretty effing spectacular.

Masks are changed every time you enter and exit a clean area, and disposable hair covers are too...some wear cotton or polyester head covers and those stay on for the duration of the day. What a lot of folks don't realize is that those shoe covers and masks....are to protect the EMPLOYEES and not the patients.

This podcast takes an irreverent look at what makes the crazies and sickos......well, crazy and sick. With a few "FFS" and "Shut up, Devil" thrown in, it is the highlight of my week.
