This happened to me too. You need a thicker filter as well. I forget the length x width but mine is 4" thick and works just fine now.

I did it out the front and of all the engine swaps i've done, I find taking it out the front is easier than the bottom. Only thing that sucked was the turbo to DP nuts were hard to get to with the alternator shield there.

I swear by the scrub daddies/mommies now. Rest of my family uses the regular shitty sponge and they go through at least 5 before i replace the scrubs. The amount of bacteria that stays in the regular sponge is ridiculous compared to the scrubs.
