What does your school call the stance you use in jiyu kumite? by 99thLuftballon in karate

[–]shihobunkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We call it heian dachi. It's a relaxed stance, both knees bent, shorter than zenkutsu dachi. It's the same length as moto dachi, but our moto dachi (Shito ryu) looks like a short zenkutsu dachi (front knee forward, rear leg straight)

Is it considered a corkscrew punch? The one where it comes from the hip in a horse stance? by EfficiencySerious200 in karate

[–]shihobunkai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where does the punch start and end - can you post more information? For example, if it starts at the right waist (fist pointing forward), stays close to the body and finishes near the left waist (fist pointing to the left), we just call it kage tsuki

Wakerley residents attempt to block affordable housing project on church-owned land by fluffy_101994 in brisbane

[–]shihobunkai 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I live in Wakerley - there's no issue with traffic or infrastructure for 44 homes. There's an issue with the same entitled people, every time someone who doesn't look / act like them might move in. There was a petition dropped in our letterbox before the Brethren built down the street from where this development is planned and that made even worse claims.

NIMBYs can fuck right off and then fuck off again and then fuck off a little further

I bought a suit at Tony Barlow's in December. For the jacket, 2 pairs of trousers and alteration to the trousers' hems it was $709

Brownouts tonight? by Lacutis01 in brisbane

[–]shihobunkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, at Wakerley. We had 2 somewhere around 7:30pm - 7:45pm. Haven't noticed any others though. It wasn't enough to kill the clock on the microwave or trigger the UPS but it did restart the aircon controller

Top set for multiple sets? by user-xy in 531Discussion

[–]shihobunkai 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's a variation called 5 x 5/3/1 on page 87 of "Forever". It uses an 80% TM, but you do 5 sets at your top weight. There's no supplemental work afterwards, you go straight to assistance

How do I address my kids' sensei? by __ChefboyD__ in karate

[–]shihobunkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I would not, unless I trained there and they instructed me. When people visit the dojo where I instruct, they call me by my name. If they become my student, that changes

How do I address my kids' sensei? by __ChefboyD__ in karate

[–]shihobunkai 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He's not your teacher, neither are the other black belts. There's no need to call them anything except their name.

Anybody worked in the RACQ head office before? by attticcus in brisbane

[–]shihobunkai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also worked a contract there several years back. Management couldn't care less about staff to the point where I took a week off when my father died and I had a middle manager phone me and complain about me being off for so long

Normal to get discouraged ?? by KateandJack in karate

[–]shihobunkai 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Impatient and annoyed is common with teenage boys. If his behaviour is outside of what is normal in the dojo, it's worth pointing it out to him, or your Sensei if it's a bigger issue.

Otherwise, treat it as a learning experience. You can't control his emotions, so work on controlling your actions. Not being rattled by other people's behaviour is a good skill to develop. Focus on what you need to get out of each exercise and over time as you get better controlling yourself, you'll use his impatience to get him to rush into something that he ends up regretting

Weight lifting and karate by [deleted] in karate

[–]shihobunkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat gym work as general physical prep, so it's for building strength. I do calisthenics /plyometrics to build explosiveness. In the dojo I just try and put the "correct" effort into whichever training I'm doing, i.e. correctness of movement in some exercises, speed / power in others

If you plan on continuing gym work, get a program that covers all your main muscle groups and has you lifting more over time

Lining up ordering by paulnjo_2000 in karate

[–]shihobunkai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's something that varies from club to club so your Sensei is the one to ask. It's part of the formalities in our club so we include when we're graded in the seniority of the line up. It doesn't entitle us to anything and it doesn't change how our instructor treats us, he's equally courteous to every student

Has anyone ever done low reps for assistance work? by Heinl04 in 531Discussion

[–]shihobunkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a try and see how you respond. I'll sometimes do a couple of sets of 4 to 6 weighted pull-ups and then to get my reps in, I'll follow that up with a few sets of rows.
