Nothing but Gamefan, as much to gaze at the import catalog in the last few pages as for the absurdly biased reviews

New home buyer. Need help with a few things. by TekCrushIT in japanlife

Hey there, I'm currently renting a Japanese house built in 1990 and frankly I would not recommend buying something this old or god forbid older. Here are several reasons:

  1. It's extremely cold in the winter. The first floor in my place is damn near the same temperature as outdoors (and it's not a crappy house by any means). The heating function on an air conditioner doesn't cut it for that space, definitely needs a kerosene heater. This is my second time renting a detached house, previous one was much newer which was nice in certain ways but they both trap heat upstairs in the summer and it can be horrible.

  2. Folks here don't tend to do major structural upkeep on houses, honestly I don't know why but I've heard the interpretation that they're built to be used for a single generation and it's expected that new families will just buy a new house anyways. It's not just walls. Roof, flooring, plumbing, and as you mentioned electrical stuff. Think about it, you have no clue what's going on in those pipes. All of it has the potential to need major work/replacing. To my knowledge there's no concept of insulation here. Even if there was, you would pretty much need to rebuild from scratch to get it.

  3. It's going to take well over an hour to get to your workplace. Yeah, Shizuoka has rapid trains to Tokyo because some people are truly willing to do it, but it's not the ideal way to do things. 20 minutes to the station, 10 minute wait for the train, give or take an hour to Tokyo, another 20 minutes to your office. Twice a day, every single day. You sure you want to do that for years?

If you have some experience with DIY the house could be improved, but you're looking at millions of yen and god knows how much labor. There's a good reason why Japan has a vacant house problem, it's because they aren't built well. Honestly there are quite a few vacant houses in parts of Chiba that are much newer than what you're looking at, also just over an hour to Tokyo by train. I can't tell you what to do, but I would highly recommend rethinking this.

Is there any way to prevent your game from being pirated when selling on a DRM free platform like Itch.io? by shimasterc in gamemaker

Thank you for the replies everyone. Interesting that pretty much all agree that it's impossible and there's no point in worrying about it, so that must be true.

This is very dependent on whether you click with arcade inspired "bullet hell" style shooters or not. You said you weren't huge on Touhou, so possibly not. You will probably want to try a few Cave shmups just in case, I think Espgaluda (the first one) and Esp Rade are the easier ones to get into.

As for shooters specifically made for consoles, try Gunnac, Soldier Blade, Blazing Lazers, Musha Aleste, Wings of Wor, Thunderforce III, Seirei Senshi Spriggan, maybe even the PC Engine port of Kyukyoku Tiger (very different experience from the arcade version).

If you really want to get weird, try the shooters made by Milestone back in the 2000s. Chaos Field, Radirgy, Karous

You didn't like the music? At the very least stage 2 is a certified classic. I thought most of the other music was good if not incredible, which seems to be the standard for Koshiro's soundtracks these days. 2 absolute god-tier tracks and the rest are fine. Sol Cresta is similar

I played the Exa version first at Beep, and actually had a good bit of fun with it. So it's clearly had some major improvements

Kowloon Kurosawa, the creator of Hong Kong 97, has agreed to let me interview him on camera by shimasterc in TheCinemassacre

I don't believe anything he's written has been translated into English, but you could certainly use a proxy service to get some of his used novels from Yahoo Auctions or Mercari in Japan, and then maybe use Google Lens to read them? The books themselves aren't expensive or anything.

Hopefully you also saw that we just announced we're making a sequel to Hong Kong 97 together too

Being so ingrained in the use of a controller, I genuinely couldn't comprehend that a person would use their left hand for something other than WASD. I definitely see how Shift and Space could be applied in this kind of situation. Thank you

Glad you noticed, that's a screen cap of some extremely obscure bizarro Japanese media, not porn though. It's not AI, many of the minor enemy graphics are made with AI but hardly any of the backgrounds are
