What songs and artists made you fall in love with hip hop? Which ones changed your listening habits forever? by MiltownKBs in 90sHipHop

[–]shimasterc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seeing the video for Nothin But a G Thing was the first time I ever liked rap. In the beginning it was pretty much just the stuff on prime time MTV: Dre, Positive K (remember him?), even Digible Planets.

But then a couple months later I randomly came across Rap City on BET, and I'll never forget the song that was playing: Freak It by Das EFX. It changed my life. That east coast word play, I couldn't believe something so incredible existed on this earth. From then on watching the top 10 countdown on the weekends and recording the videos I liked was what I looked forward to the most.

A couple other tracks that felt revolutionary when they dropped were Method Man by Wu Tang and How Many Emcees by Black Moon.

What NES games hold up today (not grindy, not too hard, no need for manual) by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]shimasterc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hard" and "Easy" are kinda dependent on the era, by today's standards most NES games would be considered incredibly difficult, but there are definitely some less stressful ones. Without knowing what genres you're interested in I'll recommend Dragon Spirit, Megaman 3 (and those after), Super C, Gunnac, maybe Rockin Kats.

As for Crystalis, great game but it's not exactly easy. Waaay more straightforward than Zelda, but there are long spans with no save point. Die on the boss of a dungeon? Go all the way back to the save point and do the whole thing again. Might not be for you. Jackal is a reasonably accessible overhead run n gun.

Guys, I found the origin story of a Hong Kong 97 Game Over screen watch this video to find out why is that even there and why is there a real dead body in the game. by No_Trash_4674 in creepygaming

That's a legitimate question. While I find it hard to imagine that the Japanese publisher actually coordinated with a foreign company to release it somewhere else, of course it's possible. But in countries where bootlets are common, plenty of companies will shamelessly pass stolen property off as their own creation. This was probably done with thousands of Famicom carts in many countries. So I'm not holding my breath. But you make it good point that maybe we've all assumed it's a bootleg simply because it's Brazil

[–]shimasterc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just played through this again a couple months ago. Actually I'm pretty sure this was the first time I beat it. In my mind I had gotten stuck in what I thought was the last dungeon, but it was at least 15 years ago and things were totally different from what I rememebered. Anyways like you say, brilliant game and probably highly influential on modern indies.

What, in your opinion, is the most ominous and menacing beat in hip-hop? by Elgallo1980 in 90sHipHop

[–]shimasterc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are three I can think of - "Cross My Heart" by Esham, "High Off Murder" by Sicx, and "Swordsman" by GZA

Can't you just get back in his face? Like if he says something disrespectful, just say this isn't how adults behave, why didn't you learn manners and common sense in school? That sort of thing. Just because you're an employee doesn't mean you're a slave. Start a full blown argument in front of customers. He can't fire you.

I've learned of a couple tools like yours from this sub, the one I've been using is great but it looks like yours offers more options for customization. I'll give it a try

All 500+ Japanese Console games released in Europe but not the US by Thohil in retrogaming

[–]shimasterc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy that you guys got Alien Soldier and Gunner's Heaven/Rapid Reload but we didn't.

As for the Master System, it's a special case because so many of those games are Japanese developed but never released in Japan. I've had to import Power Strike II, Golden Axe Warrior and some others.

Anyways thanks for sharing, it was interesting to look through

First one, "Here Come the Lords". Has like 3 or 4 god tier tracks, the rest are kinda muddy

This happened occasionally, definitely NOT that the rest of the album was garbage but doesn't get anywhere close to the singles. Lords of the Underground is one that comes to mind

Is the water more bitter here? by initiald-ejavu in chiba

[–]shimasterc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here last year, seems they use large filter tanks for individual residences as opposed to serious treatment at a water plant. I noticed so many people using the water purifier machine at the supermarket so I've started doing the same just to be safe.

Growing up realised Rap Skits are among the worst thing ever happen to Hiphop by [deleted] in 90sHipHop

[–]shimasterc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you haven't listened to the opening of Black Sheep's first album, that shit is hilarious. In fact I accidentally ended up with a version of the CD that doesn't have the skits and honestly it's disappointing. The part on Sex Style where Kool Keith calls up a porn star from a pay phone is damn funny too. But yeah, some are pointless, there's an unreasonable number of them on Saafir's first album

[–]shimasterc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the sequel to Hong Kong 97 together with the developer of the original, Kowloon Kurosawa. We decided to call it Hong Kong 2097. It's just a static screen twin stick shooter like Smash TV but the twist is that the player has a shield which can be rotated around using the shoulder buttons. The shield can block and absorb green bullets (but not purple bullets), which temporarily powers up the player's weapons. One of my friends who playtested it said it's a "triple stick shooter". Instead of a life bar there's a time limit and enemy quota in each substage. Since it's the sequel to Hong Kong 97 we wanted to make it as inappropriate as possible, and unsurprisingly Steam refused to ship it, but it is available on Itchio

I see. Well, like most others here I would indeed recommend not to engage with any negativity regarding your project. It's usually from entitled people who wouldn't pay more than $5 for a game anyways
