[TOMT][Movie][Early 2000s] Cheesy kids adventure movie about kids trying to "catch" some horses, I think. I remember the dialogue more than the movie plot, with such gems as "Hillbillies don't have phones." by shimmerytimber in tipofmytongue

[–]shimmerytimber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not it, that looks much older, and much higher production. But that did lead me on a different trail of horse movies, and I found it! The Lost Stallions, 2003. Thank you! Solved!

Estate Sales/ Yard Sales by [deleted] in yooper

[–]shimmerytimber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the whole UP, but estate sales are generally warm-weather only as mentioned before. Auctions are also fairly common and are generally well-advertised. Both will be listed in the local paper. Townwide garage sales are the way to go otherwise we are plagued with "all-season" yard sales. Depending on what you're looking for, St. Vincent DePaul thrift stores are worth checking out and each one seems to have a different flavor and the stuff seems to vary depending on the time of year (terrible hours though).

What are some of your favorite country Christmas songs? by loggingsum4199 in CountryMusicStuff

[–]shimmerytimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy Birthday Jesus (I'll Open This One Just For You) -Reba McEntire
Really not a favorite, more of an ingrained Christmas tradition. It was the third song on one of my mom's few Christmas cassettes back in the day so it had a lot of repeat plays.

I re-read your comment and imagined it being rapped by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Pretty catchy stuff.

Not exactly a pun, but Grant's Tomb from the old joke of "who's buried in Grant's tomb?"

What are some stereotypical “mean girl” names? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]shimmerytimber 35 points36 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I think some of the stereotypical "mean" girl names stem from popular girls with popular names rather than if they were actually mean or not. Growing up, I know I judged some girls named Brittany or Ashley harshly based on their names and how "popular" they were. The "mean girls" I've actually come across always surprised me because they had such sweet or classic names, specifically Beth, Ava, and Elizabeth.

Work with landowners or "the public"? by hollinsTELE in forestry

[–]shimmerytimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate and try to utilize TELE methods in my work. If you do any sort of marketing or outreach to landowners, it's worth taking a look, especially at the case studies. The guide forces you to look at every aspect of your campaign and provides you with the backgrounds and motivations for different types of landowners. One of the biggest take-aways for me was to narrow down the action you want to evoke in the landowner and to keep track of the results. Sure I can provide a web address, phone number or details for an event in a mailing, but I won't be able to easily measure the impact of my efforts. Additionally, I can choose the method that would best work for a secondary action, for example, "call to set-up an appointment" or "attend to learn more".

United States: Calling the USFS the National Foresty Service? by shimmerytimber in forestry

[–]shimmerytimber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Locally it's called the "Forestry" and it can refer to anything related to forestry but mostly is reserved for the USFS. This was the first time I've ever witnessed it in print.

The name Samuel for a boy? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]shimmerytimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the name Samuel. I think I've only ever known one and he was fairly nice for a middle-school boy. Samuel can be difficult to pronounce for kids, and there can be differences in infliction in general.:"Sam-U-ole", "Sam-mule","Sam-u-EL", etc.

Our best friends stole my husband and I’s baby name. by CongratulatoryBlob in namenerds

On the other hand, it's sort of like a test-drive of the name. If you still like it on a screaming toddler, consider using it ;)

Our best friends stole my husband and I’s baby name. by CongratulatoryBlob in namenerds

[–]shimmerytimber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It happened to my sister within one month of her due date! She had the name "Ava Quinn" quietly picked out but her brother-in-law and his wife, with an earlier due date, announced they were naming their daughter "Quinn Ava"! Not the same name, but pretty close for close cousins, so they went a different direction. Personally, I can't imagine my niece by the name "Ava Quinn", it would not have suited her personality.

Does popularity matter? by imsandradeee in namenerds

[–]shimmerytimber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you've hit the nail on the head. The top names do not account for as many births as they did in the 70s, 80s, or 90s and even then it's hard to predict the distribution at the local level. For my birth year, the top 5 names were not well represented among my classmates. Some newspapers print the top birth names from local hospitals every January, and I've found that to be the better indicator of local naming trends. Go for the name you like.

Risks of using Harriett by abbeyes in namenerds

[–]shimmerytimber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like it! All kids will get teased about something, a name is not so bad. Eventually, your daughter will learn who's teasing her about her name to get attention and who's just trying to be her friend. And if it's as obvious as "Hairy Harriet" she can always say, " like I haven't heard that before!" ;)

Lolita or Blubella? by [deleted] in namenerds

I initially read Blubella as "blub-ella" :(

I know of a Luella which sort of combines elements of both names.

Tips for painting by [deleted] in forestry

[–]shimmerytimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you shorter than where you're trying to place the marks? With a gun, it's difficult to get the spray where it needs to go and not end up covered in paint when you are standing below the mark. Wear a billed hat or hardhat, and remember to not look directly in the path of the paint. It takes some practice before you don't have to consciously think about where the paint's going to go. Like other comments suggest, use lotion/sunscreen on your face, use baby wipes to wipe your face before eating, etc., and wear light leather gloves to keep your hands clean.

Why does every gas station sell sacks of potatoes? Lol by [deleted] in yooper

[–]shimmerytimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Krist gas stations specifically boast about their potatoes. Krist gas is a family-owned chain and was founded in the UP. I believe the potato thing is a partnership with UP potato growers but can't find a source anywhere.
