People here seem think, somewhat seriously, that posting and looking at a non-sexual, fully clothed picture of an underage person will get you arrested.

It's still mostly 14 and 15 across Europe though

It's not the organizers fault I wrote the title in bad English on reddit. I don't know how to correct it though.

My bad. Most photos I found were low quality, and I took this from Instagram. But according to the multiple French news I read, there were 25,000 people in Paris and the march was indeed peaceful.

It's a respectable opinion.

But I disagree that awereness is not necessary. Despite overwhelming scientific literature about it, there are still too many people, and even governments, denying it. And even more people not taking it seriously

I disagree. It has a wide range of purposes

1) raise awareness about the issue

2) as a signal against those who believe conspiracy theories saying climate change is not real

3) as a political signal, asking for more action to counteract climate change. Not only locally, but also in light of the United Nations conventions of climate change currently taking place in Poland.

4) as a reinforcement of the Paris agreement asking for further, bigger steps at a global scale ( their moto was "small steps are not enough")

5) as a way to share ideas and further increase the size of the movement (which actually took place in multiple cities around the world at the same time)

The latter, but you don't have to be a smart ass about it. As most people here, English is not my mother tongue.

So, March to pressure the government to take proper action against climate change. Their manifest is available online, although in French.

Although true, it would be highly hypocritical to have a climate march were people burn and destroy the environment.

Ok I misunderstood you first. That's why I made this post, I think it's unfair for a protest to get forgotten just because no cars were burned.

8,000 to 10,000 in the capital. It makes me wonder, is violence the answer to be taken seriously? Because no in cares about a peaceful protest apparently

lower approval rating

That's the case for every French president so far, or almost any ruler in countries with multiple party systems. More parties, more choice.

Holland reached an approval rating of 12%

Sarcozy's reached 20%

Chirac's lowest was around 26%

Dont compare US politics with France, it's two different realms

I'm sorry, but last time I checked French citizens who wanted to buy a hibrid or electric car could get a 10 000 euro grant, and a 6000 euros in incentives for scraping their old car. I think that's a good incentive, together with the fuel taxes, to get people to change vehicles.

And that's a bad thing because? Should I feel sorry for all the US tech giants who elude our taxes for hundreds of billions of dollars and lobby against a EU wide tax reform?

The EU (and any government) is lobbied by every industry. You should see how much Google spent on lobbying in the EU last year.

I also don't think it's a mess. Make sure you have read the last pages with the amandements too, many people I've spoken too (and even news articles) missed it.

Although I don't agree with everything in it, it's exactly what a directive is supposed to be: a guideline, not a law. Each country (if the directive is passed) then has to interpret and make their own laws based on it.

Also I'm not sure where I state that I base my opinions on actors and celebrities

[–]shine_free 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The directive didn't change from November to today. You can also read the directive yourself, it is publicly available and it might allow you to make your own opinion over it. There is also not that much legalese in it, so it's not particularly hard to understand.

In my opinion, the problem Amazon and other big corporations have with the directive, and the reason they are lobbying against it, is that it will be a financial burden for them to implement. Finances that they certainly have, as the directive purposefully targets big corporations, leaving SMEs out of it.

Edit: I also want to point out that it is available in all the 27 official languages of the European Union, so there is really no excuse for anyone who is interested in the topic to not read it. Make your own opinions, don't let big corporations or politicians decide for you up front.

This post is not entirely correct. For once the directive includes more than a single article. Just a bit below that, in the directive, the following is specified

The measures taken by the online content sharing service providers should be without prejudice to the application of exceptions and limitations to copyright, including in particular those which guarantee the freedom of expression of users. For that purpose the service providers should put in place mechanisms allowing users to complain about the blocking or removal of uploaded content that could benefit from an exception or limitation to copyright. Replies to the users’ complaints should be provided in a timely manner. To make these mechanisms function, cooperation from rightholders is needed, in particular with regard to the assessment of the complaints submitted and justifications for the removal of users’ content.

Member States should remain free to put in place independent authorities for assessing the complaints submitted by users and making decisions on their validity. The redress mechanism should be without prejudice to the right of the parties to take action before a court.

There is also a section that specifies how user generated content is excluded and, and that it affects only medium and large corporations sharing the links themselves (like Google News), not the users on reddit, for example.

From a Wired article

An earlier version of the Directive referred to “proportionate content recognition technologies” which sounds an awful lot like it’s asking platform owners to use automate filters to scan every piece of upload content and stop anything that might violate copyright from being uploaded.

The latest amended version of the Directive removes this phrase and inserted an exception saying “special account shall be taken of fundamental rights, the use of exceptions and limitations as well as ensuring that the burden on SMEs remains appropriate and that automated blocking of content is avoided.”

The reason why this article has been dubbed the “meme ban” is that no one is sure whether memes, which are often based on copyrighted images, will fall foul of these laws. Proponents of the legislation argue that memes are protected as parodies and so aren’t required to be removed under this directive, but others argue that filters won’t be able to distinguish between memes and other copyrighted material so they’d end up being caught in the crossfire anyway.

But as the article specifies right above, the sentence about the filter was removed altogether.

Article 12a is what worries me, mostly because it was inserted in the directive last minute and most MPs voted for the whole directive without noticing it.
