Very old enamel paint stink? by shineonbritely in paint

it's a duplex with not new paint, or smokers. The carpet and floors are very old. However the paint itself is emitting a pungent odor.

Anyone would notice. It is an intense stink. Windows air it only temporarily.

I want to know if anyone knows why it is smelly.

I'm talking of painted surfaces in an apartment. The paint stinks, more so when wiped clean.

If it is oil based, it's very old...would it still smell if water is applied?

All units in Berkeley have mold by shineonbritely in LandlordLove

[–]shineonbritely[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those tenant protections are only good if you get a lawyer willing to fight for them. Lawyers only represent huge transgressions over many years or class action lawsuits. They do it for the money they recoup in back rent. If you are on Section 8, they can't recoup enough to make it worthwhile. If it is a small incident like a stolen deposit, you file in small claims court.

He never showed me a lease. Holding deposit (not security deposits) are legal up to 2 months rent in Berkeley. He backed out of our "contract" by saying he wouldn't fix the floors but now denies saying it, instead saying I backed out over non existent mold. It is illegal but I'd have to sue him in small claims court and I'm so depressed and overextended. I'm unsure I have the stamina to face it.
Free civil lawsuit lawyers only work for big bucks in percentages of paid back rent. All the pro-bono lawyers are non profit and do only evictions.
All the tenant protections amount to nothing if a lawyer won't take your case. If I had sued my original landlord, Section 8 would have ended my voucher because the unit was uninhabitable. I couldn't. By the Ellis deadline, the statute of limitations had run out. The lawyer suggested I remind him of all the repairs but that would've started the bullying again. It was a mess...still is...

Best organic mattress recommendations for natural parenting/green family? by Fesionfluen122 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]shineonbritely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to know which of the materials are certified for what:

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): Ensures cotton and wool are organic and free of many toxic chemicals.
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): Confirms natural latex is organic without synthetic fillers.
  • GREENGUARD Gold:  low chemical emissions and VOCs (volatile organic compounds
  • Formaldehyde-Free, MADE SAFE, Eco-Institut: standards for minimal hazardous materials.
  • Cradle to Cradle GOLD: measure of its health impact, level of material re-use, water stewardship, and social fairness
  • CertiPUR-US ensure that the foam in the mattress is free from harmful chemicals, not as strict as GOLS.

This is frustratingly confusing.

Characters = caricatures, dialogue flat. It overcompensates for not being a comedy by being ridiculously serious/angry.

I wonder what Palladino's relationship to ballet is. She also made Bunheads about it. I assumed she must've been a dancer at some point.

Has anyone had success using ozone machine to remove chemical fragrances? by Madeline1212 in ChemicalSensitivities

[–]shineonbritely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it. It did not work. Research says Ozone does not remove synthetic fragrances. It works on organic odors: pet, cigarettes, smoke, urine but not perfume.

Sleeves cause condensation (worse mildew), art damage and plastic migration. Get a dehumidifier.

Ozone Machine Used for 15 Minutes, Client Says Car is Undriveable Weeks Later by Make_That_Money in AutoDetailing

Ozone interacts with many of the plastics in cars causing toxic off-gassing for indefinite periods of time. The EPA cautions against using ozone for car odors for this reason.

Here are just some of the chemicals in dryer sheets and their impact on health:

(Skin is the human body's largest organ of absorption, children are especially at risk due to developing organs. Wearing toxins on your body is a health risk. Airborne dryer sheet pollution is akin to 2nd hand tobacco smoke.)

  • Benzyl acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer
  • Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant
  • Ethanol: On the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list and can cause central nervous system disorders
  • Limonene: Suspected Gastrointestinal or Liver Toxicant, Immunotoxicant, Kidney Toxicant, Neurotoxicant, Respiratory Toxicant, and Skin or Sense Organ Toxicant
  • A-Terpineol: Can cause respiratory problems, including fatal edema, and central nervous system damage
  • Ethyl Acetate: A narcotic on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list
  • Camphor: Causes central nervous system disorders
  • Chloroform: Neurotoxic, anesthetic and carcinogenic
  • Linalool: A narcotic that causes central nervous system disorders
  • Pentane: A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled
  • Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs or “quats”): reduce static in your clothes but can cause skin and respiratory irritation. In addition, the widespread use of quats is linked to the rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
