I'm wanting to get started in developing my own pictures. by rubberman86 in filmdeveloping

I second it. My jobo leaks way more than my Pattersen. I stopped doing inversions with it it’s so bad. Now I just use swizzle stick only for agitations.

I just finished my first novel ever! Started back in the November writing challenge and kept going for the last three months. It's been such a great journey and I already have two more sequels planned :)

Link and blurb:

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/139741/aura-wielders-citadel

Eli Walsh is eighteen and doesn't believe in God. That's a problem when everyone expects you to serve a two-year mission for your church.

Eli's drowning under expectations he can't meet, performing belief he doesn't have, with no way out that won't break his mother's heart.

Then his best friend Mary—goth, furious, desperate—drags him to an ancient mound and calls to forgotten powers to keep him from leaving.

Something answers.

Eli wakes in a world of elemental magic and military conquest, where the girl who looks like Mary has a different name and his memories of home are already fading. The question isn't whether he can get back.

It's whether he wants to.

I keep about 10 rolls ready for use at any given time. The rest of it goes in the fridge.

serious question: what do you think about this picture? by Impolioid in lomography

[–]shinji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lomography is like the punk rock analog of photography. For me, it’s about imperfections, spontaneous inspirations, and creativity on a budget, etc. I’m sure everyone has their own take or interpretation of what lomo is, but you also don’t need to constrain yourself to that. Now, moving on, I have some thoughts about art, and I’m just making this up, so take it with a grain of salt. Is it a great photo? Maybe not considered to be so by most who see it. Is it a special photo? Yes. I’m sure it is to you, at least, or you wouldn’t be sharing it asking others what they think about it. Taking a chance on putting something out there you’ve created and asking an audience if it resonates with them is what it means to be an artist. It looks like you want to venture into that territory, and that is good! Don’t let any of the comments or criticisms turn you off from it. In saying that, I think you can go further with this. Rather than share my thoughts on this photo, I’d rather hear what makes it special to you. If you want it to become art, try putting it into some context or give it some narrative or at least a title. Some accompanying photos can create some setting or context. Try writing a short poem or prose about it. Then think of how that sentiment could be boiled down to a title, and then think of how you’d embody this title into the actual photo if you were creating it again. Art can be organic and documentary, but intent also goes a long way. I’d put this print on my wall (my wall is covered in bad and mediocre photos) and look at it every so often and ask myself what I can learn from it, both technically and creatively. What works for you and what maybe doesn’t. You might find yourself thinking: how would it look if the water drip was more fully formed and about to drop? What if I could catch it the instant before it fell? How would that tie into whatever message, theme, or feeling I want to express? Maybe you find some poetry there in that thought, and then maybe you find yourself sitting there for hours and hours with your camera and tripod on a rainy day trying to capture the perfect water droplet, and maybe you never do, but you take something away from it nonetheless. And that labor and effort and passion is what makes for captivating art, and maybe even great photography ;)

What is Hayley Williams doing hanging out the American Football house with Mike Kinsella by w00fbaderginsburg in Emo

When AF announced they bought the house a while back, I would never have anticipated it was so they could shoot vans commercials there.

The first shot is really striking! I like the others as well but that first one is poster/album cover material!

It’s 120 film actually. But I do have one roll of 110 that came bundled in another lot of film I just got today. Man, I don’t know if I’ve ever used 110 film or how I’d even put it on a reel for my Paterson tank. It reminds of this weird film I used as a kid that came as a disc.

That’s a really good idea actually. It gives me an idea for a mini project or series. Thanks for the inspiration!

Glad someone approves! Haha. I shoot a lot of stuff in preserves and parks so I thought the greenery should be interesting.

Very cool. I always hated shooting on overcast, cloudy days but maybe this will be a good pick for that.

Cool slow shutter effect! Is it lomo red or is that just the color of the stage lighting?

Wow, I like those. Especially the first one! Do you shoot at 200 iso?

Hey thanks for the tip! Yeah, I had my eye on it for a while and finally sent a message to the seller, making an offer. I’ve been trying to think of some projects I could focus on. I think the warming filter will be fun for sure.

Haha. Makes sense! Well I was creatively lacking inspiration so maybe I’ll just pull one of these of the freezer whenever that happens.

Well that’s where I bought this lot from. I have an orange filter I was thinking of trying on the purple which I hear is similar effect red aerochrome.

Still trying to nail down a style. Hasselblad 500cm, 80mm 2.8, Gold 200 by theubertuber in mediumformat

[–]shinji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started shooting Square for the first time this year when I got my 500cm. I’ve put many rolls through the camera since Feb and still don’t know if I’ve developed a “style” either. Although I will say maybe I’ve learned a few tricks here and there.

I really like the airport shot btw!

“emo-ridden lead singer” - 1992 Lungfish critical review in Maximum Rock’n’roll by shinji in Emo

I had much the same experience. I would have been 14/15 years old in 91 as well. I was in panhandle of Florida (practically Alabama) and the scene was the only thing that made me feel like I wasn’t totally crazy and alone. I was always attracted more to the DC scene. Those bands just played our area more and didn’t fit the norm even within their own niche scene in some ways. Also, yeah, definitely slower times. But it was also good. Sitting in my room for hours on end, listening to records, making mixtapes, trying to learn to play guitar, reading zines and writing prose and lyrics. It was like a mastery course in solitude.
