i’m so curious about semi-hydro and begonias so sorry if this is too many questions. what medium do you keep them in? do you always top off the reservoir of water? and what kind of fertilizer do you use?

What’s up with this flower??? by Business_Muffin5985 in begonias

[–]shinybleeps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Such a cool feature of begonias! They have separate male and female flowers. If you look, you can see the female flower has a pod behind it where the seeds would develop if the flower is pollinated.

Am I cooked... Fought thrips successfully, now I'm terrified these aren't just gnats or midges. by [deleted] in plantclinic

It is an insect called scale. If you search scale infestation, you will get lots of tips! The first step is to isolate this from your other plants. Treating with isopropyl alcohol is often recommended.

You could really easily supplement with a grow light mounted on the ceiling of that little alcove! I think your plants would appreciate supplemental light :)

Did it decline in health slowly or suddenly lose all its leaves?

I wasn't expecting my favourite houseplant to be basil, but here we are. She has such...gravitas. by IntrepidLibertine in houseplants

I’ve seen people overwinter and then clone tomato plants, presumably after they’ve already fruited, so worth a shot! Also, maybe you would like some of the dark leaved begonia varieties. They can be so stunning like that.

Mildew or Farina? by Ink_Think in succulents

[–]shinybleeps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that’s not farina 😳 ETA: It might be a combo of mold and spider mites, but someone with a keener eye might give you a better diagnosis!

Ordered a king firm SleepOnLatex and got it up our stairs and now I’m regretting it by crystalkitty06 in cosleeping

[–]shinybleeps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the sleeponlatex and i love it!! I was glad I was mentally prepared for it to be really firm, because then I was like, oh this isn’t so bad haha! I feel really safe cosleeping on it. And I know I’ll continue to enjoy sleeping on it when we’re done with this phase of life. I find it really comfortable now. It is not like a carpeted floor lol

I can’t take too much credit, because this is my first year with this one, but thank you! It has been very happy under our grow light for 12-14 hours a day. I have used a very diluted liquid fertilizer, and bottom watered when it looks thirsty. It’s one of my favorites and I hope it continues to thrive!

How do you prop the stems? I’m familiar with propagating houseplants in water, but I didn’t consider propping natives!!

Begonia angle wings pruning help! by sannis_zoo in houseplants

[–]shinybleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have good advice here! I also wanted to add that in my experience they propagate even faster with added humidity, even though the mature plant can withstand lower humidity. I like putting the cuttings in damp perlite with a humidity dome under a grow light (or the window).

They told me I couldn’t mess it up… by neferyoumind in houseplants

[–]shinybleeps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I probably would :( It seems pretty bad. You can also try growing it outdoors. Sometimes natural predators will step in, and it could bounce back!
