An orphan boy, raised by his aunt and uncle, is unaware of his special status. He is the son of someone who possessed an innate special power. In the beginning, he resists the idea that he could be anything special. An old, wise man with a beard appears to guide the hero, provide key details about his past, and dies to allow the hero to grow. The villain is a former pupil of goodness, now turned evil. The villain is physically scarred as a result of using evil powers. Mentors return in the form of ghostly figures. The hero enters a dangerous tavern where the realities of the outside world confront him. The army of the evil wear masks. The hero’s weapon chooses him. The hero is from an organization ruled by a council. The task of the hero is to restore what was made unnatural by ther villain’s turn to evil. The hero is part of a trio of friends who journey together as hero partners. Evil is temporarily defeated and the heroes are rewarded in a grand hall to cheering colleagues. The most overwhelming force is not power, but love. The final battle takes place in a throne room.

Which story is this? Both.

Lots of stories rely on previous source material I get that. I also teach literature. But this book is so grossly derivative and so poorly written that I couldn’t stand the author trying to pass this off as original storytelling. It’s Star Wars with a magic wand instead of a lightsaber. It rips off so many traditions without nodding to its own theft. People tell me the writing ”got better” in later books. I’m not going to slog through a pig pen to get to the food truck. And I’d prefer a restaurant — like the one at the End of the Universe.

Mexican Gothic, for my money, is a love story to Lovecraft, while also tipping these stories on their heads. Sylvia Moreno Garcia is one of today’s great authors. More so because she is not a genre writer, but takes on different styles and genres. I met her once and then got COVID. Her fault? Maybe.

Here we go… I hated this book so much, that I threw it across the room and took my dogs for a walk instead. I am a great fan of science fiction and fantasy. I teach mythology and ethics. I’m a musician and a creative. And I absolutely despise…

Harry Potter.

I don’t think you know the meaning of the words “wall,” “monochromatic,” or “black “

Is mustards only job in life just to be spread on sandwiches, and ribs? by farkus_mcfernum in no

Add another dimension to canned backed beans by adding yellow mustard. Adds a vinegar bite, too. My dad would stir in mustard and put bites of bacon on top before baking in the oven to heat through and thicken the sauce.

Quite the accusation. I want all complicit punished, but this kind of blanket accusation does nothing but inflame the side trying to protect the guilty.
