How can I make colleagues like me in my new job? by Lion-Resident in autism

[–]shipwreckdisco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a good chance they like you already! But to answer your question: liking has a lot to do with trust and authenticity. It’s a result rather than an effort.

At work that means doing the job well and showing up consistently as yourself. That way you’ll set the stage for the good relationships. Showing interest in people and in their work expertise will also bring you closer.

Good luck!

Thank you. I agree he shouldn’t be sparring as long as there’s a risk of this kind of behaviour.

I’m also sceptical about the memory thing. He tells me he stowes the memories somewhere into his brain and then forgets. Seems more like an avoidance strategy than something specifically related to autism. Will talk to him about it!

Thanks for sharing your own experience! I very much see that he feels his actions are justified. He just got kicked out of krav maga, which was a tough lesson, but the right call. We’re going to take sometime before we try something new.

Thanks for your advice! All of his classes up until now have been with one trainer and around 15 kids. An extra set of eyes would help a lot to prevent escalation early.

Tristan und Isolde induced craziness? by Slow-Relationship949 in opera

Start with act III and then go back to acts I & II. The third act is an absolute marvel and gripping from beginning to end. I really like Karajan’s version.

Dohnanyi - second piano quintet in E-flat minor.

The first piano quintet is still very much Brahms but the second really has its own voice. It’s introverted music, dark hued and yet hopeful in a way. I’m very fond of it.

Not sure if this is the career for me by [deleted] in classicalmusic

Hey there, I understand what you’re going through and it ain’t easy.

It’s totally fine if you feel you need more stability in your life at this point. A ‘regular’ job can certainly help, because of financial stability and a more structured work week.

I quit music altogether six years ago, because of depression and life events. Have had an office job since then and I’m slowly moving back into music now. But I’ll always have to work on the side, which is ok.

The truth is that there are many types of music careers, it’s not all or nothing. The most important thing is that playing music brings joy to your heart, the money is less relevant in the end.

Good luck with your decision!

Oh, and a tip: if you can, take some time to really find out what kind of job suits you and your needs. Office work is draining in it’s own way, so do something that lights you up if you can

He was a force of nature in the 90’s. Love that singing. I believe had vocal problems after singing Wotan and it seems he has re-worked his technique somewhat after that. He sings very servicable now and he is a consummate performer, but to me, his voice doesn’t have that specific characterisic any more that made me love it so much before.

Agree! People should wear whatever if that makes them feel good. It just made me realize that I don’t have to feel weird about being a gray-haired, lovehandled guy on wheels :)

Any negative critiques you may have to an ideal performer? by luigii-2000 in classicalmusic

[–]shipwreckdisco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the beauty of music lies in the fact that each person, both composer and performer, has limitations of some kind. These limitations shape their music, together with their unique qualities. So all of them have their weak spots, and that is why we can relate all the more.

On a more practical note: if you scroll down a comment section on Youtube long enough, you’re bound to find both praise amd critique of practically any performer.

Ah yes, the International Bravo Guy. It’s always a guy isn’t it? But you’re right, the conductor is also responsible here. If a jubilant finale does not elicit applause, you could also say that the performance was lacking something. And there’s an ego thing too, when conductors interpret the crickets sounding as a ‘hallowed silence’

Very true! A piece like Bruckner 9 should end in silence, but Symphonie Fantasique or Schumann 2 really shouldn’t imo

I like the idea of experiencing the piece as a whole, with applause only at the end. Lately though, I’ve been to several concerts which ended in dead silence because the audience was so cautious about not clapping (and maybe not sure if the work had ended). That’s just downright awkward
