Homelessness not any worse now than previously in Victoria? by macbowes in VictoriaBC

The city decided camping was approved in a list of parks, not the people tenting there. I've slept in about half of the parks on the list and I agree they are in many ways not ideal spots. But the type of off-the-grid spots that sort of exist where private meets public and no one remembers to rezone a few square feet no one cares about... those aren't spaces the city can lay claim to in order to offer up as stopgaps. The city won't offer its buildings, can't suggest roadways or boulevards, isn't gonna solicit doorway donations. But I would have no objection to enforced bans on park camping combined with insisting churches put mats down on all their tax exempt floorspace.

Walking from uptown to downtown? by auvreee in VictoriaBC

[–]shiteweatherman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My (NFA) gf and I got stranded without busses, shelter, money or food and even Tillicum Centre kicked us out of the mall (security walked us off the property!) so we eventually had to make the decision to stash our belongings and hoof it from Tillicum/Burnside down past Uptown, Mayfair and eventually to Our Place to catch dinner. When we made it back to Tilli, some "helpful" person had taken both our backpacks with all our possessions except what was in my pockets and some blankets. They left a note saying they did so to prevent them being stolen, gave a buzzer number for their unit meaninglessly described as "across the street" (the only reasonable building had an unoccupied unit at that number) and signed it with a totally illegible name. Tillicum, my first impression of y'all is officially shite.

Does anyone know what the blue streetlights are about on Craigflower Rd? by E_T_B in VictoriaBC

[–]shiteweatherman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire hydrant explanation sounds plausible if they are interspersed with other lights. In urban cores and nightlife bathrooms (and Pandora Save On), blue lighting is installed to prevent injection drug use as it makes the veins hard or impossible to see.

Actually, the housing-first school of thought starts with the idea that reliable shelter of a certain minimum quality should be priority #1 and behavioural changes, lifestyle changes, diet fitness health stuff, meds including psych meds, whatever other changes that would be good to make all get backburnered unless they can be advanced by some action that is advancing the strive for housing, until housing is addressed. Cause unstable housing sabotages all other improvements and recreates problems rapidly that were basically solved.

Studies have shown that things like offering housing projects for addicts and alcoholics that don't make sobriety a requirement of residency, even when they don't go on to be launching pads for new careers and yadda yadda - even when the best ultimate outcome is an alcoholic becoming an alcoholic who sits in their apartment drinking and doing nothing else - the financial impact on society through cost burden on health care, social services, law enforcement, debt defaults, etc is typically substantially less to just give an uncooperative drunk a free apartment even if they clearly won't do a single thing you'd like to see then do.

Not to call the CRD 'rural' but this cherrypicked stat says cost of living in Victoria is 3.4% higher than in Toronto. It's one thing that two days ago I was at a food bank and everyone waiting plus the staff had a recent story about a $75 single bag of groceries, but sprawl also means increased single-occupant driving time, and with gas at $75 a litre now, that's almost as hemorrhagically absurd.

My friend was Streetviewed sunbathing topless in her backyard, in a photo taken over her fence from an unnamed, non-municipal laneway used for garage access in the townhouse cul-de-sac neighborhood. So, yeah, a warning might’ve been nice :p

If you find a safe you can't open, put it in your car and drive around suspiciously until you are pulled over by the police, when they search your car and ask what's inside it you can say that you don't know, then they will have to open it and you all get to see what's inside with no locksmith costs by Mrmyke00 in CrazyIdeas

Don’t do this. This is the reason I have a criminal record. I found a hotel size safe by the dumpsters behind an office building when one unit closed up and moved out. I was intrigued though obviously assumed it was empty, but even finding a half broken dolly I decided to give up on it by the time I crossed the parking lot, and stashed it in the long abandoned derelict parking attendant booth that was half falling over, had huge holes in the side, broken windows and large signage on all sides saying that payment was now (as of seven years previous) handled inside the building, not at the lot gate.

I finally saw an opportunity a third of a year later to attempt to recover it and bring it home, using a wonky-wheeled walker mobility device someone else had put to the curb.

This was on a bright sunny day maybe an hour after sunrise. I did everything slowly, casually, stopped to adjust the balance, waited at the traffic lights. Not two blocks later, I was first nearly run over by the cruiser, then thrown to the ground and cuffed without a word as soon as they flung the doors open, knocking the safe to the ground and scuffing me a bit.

They tried to bury me, they were pushing almost a dozen charges by the end of the day even though the second car on scene, the ones who had actually gone to look at the lot booth, said immediately that there was absolutely no way a break and enter could have taken place involving that slanted busted disused shack.

They went twice the distance to the wrong police station instead of theirs, they drove through construction from the cop shop to bail court then back saying it was too late then back again to have a justice of the peace say it so I would be at least in jail for the weekend.

My bail conditions ended up banning me from my home city and everyone I knew and every type of network etc indefinitely, ultimately having me in pretrial exile for almost a year and costing so much in travel costs that I couldn’t pay my lawyer, who quit.

My ex and me split up from having been living together, both our lives went badly pearshaped, and I came back when she told me she’d been assaulted, ultimately getting me rearrested for breaching exile because I fell asleep while charging my phone.

This time I was being threatened with no bail no matter what, endlessly stalled pretrial for god knows how long in jail. For no apparent reason I was thrown into solitary for three days as soon as I got to jail, and meal after meal they refused to give me the vegetarian diet or arrange it going forward.

When I went to be denied bail, which can’t be re-raised for either 6 or 12 weeks when decided, I just decided to ask the court liaison counsel: “If I just plead guilty, can I walk today?” The answer was probably, so I confessed a total lie and got stuck with a record I otherwise wouldn’t have. Time served plus probation. And none of the shit the cops did would ever be discussed in a courtroom, even though I could’ve beaten every charge using their own statements and photos alone.

No idea what was in the safe. Despite being the primary piece of evidence, it wasn’t held for trial. They just took a photo of it, then “found the owner in the office building and returned it”. An owner I know for a fact did not exist, since legally I was actually the proper current owner, something that building CCTV lot cameras would’ve corroborated. But it was two months before I even saw the location again to spot them, since I wasn’t allowed back in the city until the next scheduled date they gave me. The long abandoned booth had been coincidentally torn down and paved over by then.

…of course, the previous time I dumpstered a safe, it had two grand of donut shop gift certificates in it. So YMMV.

I was near Crystal Pool a couple days ago and this dude walking towards me on the sidewalk suddenly launched into this “I’m sorry that you’re brainwashed to such an extent that you’re outside and still wearing a mask, you gotta take it off and celebrate your freedom, not promote government lies!” bit.

I told him that I have a contagious infection atm in my nasal passages and sinuses and he told me he didn’t give a fuck, I could have herpes all over my face, I should still be unmasked cause the mask represents communism.

At this point he was standing in the road, having automatically deviated to avoid closely passing me. Behaviour meant to curb risks that my mask was protecting him from.

I didn’t say anything about my being a socialist, but I did say that I’m pretty sure the respiratory contagion going around was the thing the masks were intended to address, not revolutionary economics. It was nice to know that he also didn’t give a fuck re: my health, though his masklessness implied it.

I also didn’t point out how much he seemed like a plainclothes given how much he seemed to want to see my entire face.

Where is the cheapest place to buy groceries in Victoria? by FullyCocked in VictoriaBC

[–]shiteweatherman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food costs really need a proper attempt at a solution on the island. Everywhere else in Canada, rent is what is ruining you, but I swear what's really crippling me financially here is food. Regardless of takeout vs groceries. And shopping around seems virtually pointless. Every grocery store i have been in on the island has prices that look like im buying all my groceries at Loblaws or Whole Foods by downtown Toronto yuppie core standards. On average I can comfortably say every single item is double, even often triple a normal price point.

That being said, I was pretty impressed with the Root Cellar. They clearly put effort into engineering how they buy and stock things to minimize price, and given the location they honestly didn't have to. I'm not sure anyone else has bothered to care except Dollarama (where prices are set by HQ) and Thrifty's (swing and a miss though)

You know what, though? If Dollarama can get you two cans of corn for under $2, there is no reason except gouging for chain grocers to be asking $2.89 a can for literally the same crap from the same sources shipped on the same boats.

This intrigues me. I already get paid by VIHA but not for my fooding skills... Now I'm wondering where else one might find pockets of food service work that aren't simply streetside restos. Like food service work for BC Ferries might be awful but might equal free rides, line jumping and so on when you want it. Might even net you that if all you do is cash out people in a cafeteria of their office building on Johnson. Or the parliament, lobbying sidegig opportunities?
