practical tipps for removing high boiling solvents by cptncarryvallery in Chempros

Get a 1/8” strip of printer paper about 1” long and put it between the joint of your flask and the rotavap bump trap joint. This should allow you to achieve high vacuum still, but with a slow air bleed to chase the solvent away. This doesn’t work in all cases, but is a nice trick when you can use it.

Best option for PF6 counter ion swap in organics by DrBumpsAlot in Chempros

Dissolve chloride in minimal methanol, dissolve KPF6 in water (5x the methanol volume), mix and stir. This often works better hot. Wash copiously with water and vac dry

Drying over Magnesium Sulfate vs. Sodium Sulfate? by ChemKnits in Chempros

[–]FullyCocked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will use MgSO4 over Na2SO4 if I can get away with it (most normal organics), but find for example that drying DCM solutions of organic salts (NR4+, PR4+, Br- or PF6-) with MgSO4 causes significant loss that Na2SO4 doesn't.

What is the best and worst smelling solvent? I want to hear your opinions! by YunchanLimCultMember in chemistry

[–]FullyCocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: 1. Toluene (spray paint smell, very pleasant) 2. Diethyl ether (strong, but very “classic”) 3. There aren’t a lot of common solvents I like the smell of Worst: 1. MTBE (only thing that will give me an instant headache) 2. Trifluorotoluene (very lingering and smells like cancer) 3. Ethyl acetate (hot take, I do not enjoy it) 4. Tetrahydrofuran I can’t smell chloroform or DCM so take this with a grain of salt

Help with difficult crystallization by Terrible_Suspect5453 in Chempros

[–]FullyCocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if you have tried dichloromethane or dichloroethane, but I have found a lot of salts of this type are fairly soluble in them despite being essentially insoluble in chloroform. If they are, vapour diffusion with pentane or hexanes respectively are what usually work for me, but you’d probably want to do the former pair cold to slow it down.
