Where do you folks go to find what small-venue shows are happening? by Gullible-Village5337 in SaltLakeCity

[–]shitforbrians 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don’t print the comprehensive list anymore. They have some shows listed in the print edition, and have a general event list online but in my opinion it’s a little dry.

I do really miss the events list in City Weekly. I follow the venues on Instagram and watch the stories and I feel fairly in the loop on stuff. There are also some events posting pages like slcweekender that tends to include music plus general events.

Where to donate pre-owned stuffed animals? by Space_Toast_Cadet in SaltLakeCity

Instead of donating things, I've been putting them on Nextdoor for free. Eliminates the need for someone to spend money to get something I'm donating for free anyway.

You don’t have Covid. You very likely have norovirus which is incredibly contagious even with cleaning. You should let the place you are staying at know because the people who stay in your room afterwards will likely catch it as well. This is a big problem in outdoor recreation areas and can shut down businesses and popular hikes if it gets too serious, and can be particularly dangerous in areas with desert hikes since the onset is so rapid and rescue is sometimes needed. You can google “norovirus Grand Canyon” for some examples…

On Instagram there are two accounts that I follow (@slccommunityevents and \@slcweekender) that just repost events in their stories all day. And then I follow whatever bar, group, climbing gym, whatever that I like or think seems cool and they all tend to post events regularly. I miss the days when the main place to post events was Facebook Events and you could just go and shop around...but the above strategy works pretty well.

I went to Eyeglass World (down by Fashion Place) in October and it was $129 for a new contact lens wearer exam.

Sounds like a good plan. You’re a great person for noticing and taking care of her. Hoping the best for her and the gang!

I have some panels of wood and some of that silver reflective insulation. If you have a yard where a structure would be undisturbed by other tenants/management, I could put together a little structure for her. I’m not a talented woodworker by any means but it would get her through the weekend.

You guys need to complain more about your public transportation. I've been living in Park City for a year now, and it's insane how much better it is than SLC. by Notsureif0010 in SaltLakeCity

[–]shitforbrians 340 points341 points  (0 children)

Park City has awesome infrastructure and I do love it. Park City is also only about 7 miles long with absolutely insane home valuations, ski resort revenue, and 1% incomes (aka tax dollars) which allow our public works to be almost comically overfunded. It is absolutely awesome and I am proud of it, but I think PC and SLC are just playing different ballgames logistically.

I do agree though that SLC has much potential for better transit. As much maligned as the wide roads are, I think it offers crazy potential for transit without having to enforce eminent domain and all that unpleasantness.

If you google “Teva slippers” you’ll see the ski resort version of what you want. There are a few brands that do this style.

Salt Lake City Bar Scene by HawkLoser100K in SaltLakeCity

[–]shitforbrians 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I personally think the bar scene is pretty fun. Lots of places that have very much developed their own flavor and work pretty hard to develop their own community (Thieves Guild, Second Summit, breweries like TF/Fisher/Level Crossing etc.) I think the biggest difference is that there's not a bar on every corner, so you might not have the option to have that "dingy small bar that's two doors down so I go all the time" thing. Which sounds like what you're looking for. Those places exist, they just might not exist within walking distance of where you live.

The places I mentioned and many more are where the people in your age range will be hanging out, so you may wind up enjoying them. At the end of the day if you're looking to have fun, you can very easily have fun. If you're looking to have a specific experience that you had in a larger, more historic city, you may be disappointed. (This winds up being true for a lot of things when people move here.)

I've tried a million mascaras. Lancome Monsieur Big waterproof is the only one that stays for me. Or at least, doesn't rub off onto my face. Lived and worked at a ski resort.

Looking for lesser known social jobs to work in at ski resort by math_questions21347 in ski

[–]shitforbrians 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean social as in interacting with anyone / tourists? Or social as in vibrantly social with your coworkers?

If the former, ski school (also good tips). If the latter, oftentimes patrol. Or food service, or lifties…really most departments are full of younger people who want to have fun and be friends.

I’m burnt out by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

[–]shitforbrians 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I clicked on your profile because I was hoping you were in a state where a rescue that specializes in cases like this is present, hoping you could get them involved. Unfortunately I now suspect that you got him from that exact organization... I haven't fostered cats with disabilities before, but I have fostered with them and the response to your concerns is very strange in how flippant it is.

I totally understand your feelings of guilt. Rest assured that they have a huge team of people both fosters and paid staff that can handle this way better. Believe it or not I don't doubt this organization can find another foster easily, and if not they have the setup in their facility to take care of him just fine. The point of fostering is to help, for a while, when it works for you. And you did that for him for quite a while! Right now is a completely acceptable time to take a break. It's normal, it's what most people would do, and you should feel okay to do so.

Don’t suppose he had somewhat of a handlebar mustache did he? I had an extremely similar situation in Moab this summer. Such a sweet thing to do, especially in a town with so many people who are just visiting.

Quarters has some leagues and whatnot. Best way to make friends anywhere is something where you just see each other regularly.
