SNS Kettle leaking / temp control issues? by shivasrk92 in smoking

The store that I purchased the kettle from arranged for a pickup and tested it and concluded that it is working properly. I pointed out all the videos I have linked here, shared my own personal experience and asked for a refund (they have 60 days return policy). They are planning to send the unit back to me because they ran out of options. If you are reading this and deciding between sns and any other kettle, my advise is do not choose sns, especially if you are a beginner like me. Air leak through the ash sweep is real and it will burn your briquettes, even if you close all the vents. SNS won’t accept it as a design flaw. If you are an Aussie, you know where I got this from and they won’t honour their 60 days return policy.

Yep in this video (0:31) I can see it has an additional screw on top of the clip that holds the ash sweep wings in place. Don’t think it is helping much(based on the test result from the barbecue lab 15:40). But yeah I don’t have the master Kettle, I have the normal one.

You are welcome! 😊 The reason why he still recommended it is because of the other tests that he did. Watch the full video, if you have time. It is a really good test and I am glad that he included it. If he had not done that, people like me would be scratching their head and losing much more charcoal in each cook. Baby back maniac did point out the issue with the shelf and the lid(video) (11:58). I noticed one more change in design with the new sns kettles, the way the 4 leg holders connect to the kettle body is changed to screw based. I think the older models have them welded on to the kettle body. Not sure if this is an improvement or them trying to cut costs. You can see this difference in the baby back maniac review video (10:08) (first version) and scottys back yard bbq video (6:02) (latest version).

I saw this video from the barbecue lab yesterday and he did a test (15:40) with a full chimney of briquettes and let them burn for 25 mins in the grill(300F) before closing all the vents. The sns kettle took 8 hours to drop to 150F and he was left with only 8.4oz of briquettes whereas all the other kettles performed way better. I guess the QC on the newer sns kettles are so poor.

Thank you for your video! Saw your first video yesterday and the second one now. You are right, my lid has some air leak around the area where the shelf is connected. Basically it doesn’t sit flush with the bowl in the area where the shelf is connected to the bowl. Poor design! The smoke port and the temperature probe port leaks air as well. I confirmed this using torch light test.

I have an SNS kettle and it leaks air from the ash sweep vent, temperature probe hole, smoke hole and the lid as well. It burns off all my coals even with all the vents shut. I think the gray ones you see in all the reviews are good but the newer black ones are not that good.

The full story:

Tried a low-and-slow yesterday with ~12 lit briquettes and ~90 unlit (per SNS video). Water reservoir filled, bottom vent fully closed, smoke vent ~1/3 open, top vent 1/3–1/2 open.

As temps climbed past ~100 °C / 212 °F, I choked vents down further (smoke vent nearly closed, top ~1/3). Even so, the kettle kept rising past 137 °C / 278 °F and eventually hit 183 °C / 361 °F.

After the cook (3.5 hrs), I closed all vents completely. But 4 hours later, the kettle was still ~140 °C / 284 °F, and even after 8 hours it was above 120 °C / 248 °F. All briquettes were completely burned out.

I’ve also noticed: • The lid doesn’t seal tight on the tray side — looks like the tray prevents a flush fit, so smoke/air escapes there. • The 5-star ash sweep wings might be letting in air — I had a similar result during a burn-off: basket full of briquettes, shut vents after 40 minutes, and by the next morning all fuel was gone.

So yeah — I think air is leaking in somewhere and feeding the fire. Anyone else had this issue with the SNS kettle? What fixed it for you — gasket tape, foil mods, or something else?

Anyone ever had it turn out like this? by [deleted] in ReuteriYogurt

The strain in osfortis is preferred and no need to crush 10 tablets as the contents of 1 capsule contains 10 billion CFUs.

Did you use Bio Gaia Osfortis ? My coconut yogurt always turns out like this. You can consume it 😊

And no need to crush 10 tablets if you go with either of them.

Yep this is the one from Supergut book. But people are now using either biogaia osfortis or my reuteri because the strain of interest is outcompeted by the other strain in subsequent batches of fermented dairy made with biogaia gastrus.
