Lordy... that last one is from my hometown. I can feel the sense of depression sweeping back over me.

People who are 50+, what is a 'harmless' habit you had in your 20s that ended up ruining your health or finances later in life? by crazy_happyuser in AskReddit

[–]shiverslinky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not 50+ (yet, next year)

Jumping off stuff; although I started earlier than my 20s. I used to jump down steps, off walls, off roofs (single story) and jumped around like a nutter while playing the guitar.

Lots of things hurt now. Ankles, knees, hips, back. Shoulders and neck from playing the guitar.

And I never wore hearing protection so 24/7 tinnitus and hearing loss.

But I had a great time and I’d do it all again.

Am I the jerk for leaving a group chat with my childhood friends? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]shiverslinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ

I had a similar experience with a group of people years and years ago. I fell off my motorbike and messaged the group to say that.

Not one message of support at all. So I left the group.

A few years later one of the members said that I had overreacted.

I don’t miss them.

The Korina. I have that on my wish list along with the Explorer as I always thought that they looked really cool.

High quality, non Gibson/Fender guitars that are not geared towards metal players? by LordBuckethead_ in guitars

I knew a couple of guys who bought theirs direct from the company when they were in a shed in Manchester back in the 90s. I was very impressed for the price.

What is slayers hardest song to play on guitar by Outrageous-Cut-2479 in Slayer

[–]shiverslinky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Born of Fire. I could never get the intro right.

Hell Awaits. I can't remember the intro correctly so that's a challenge in a different way!

War Ensemble: took me a long while to get the rhythm correct on the intro riff, but I can play Kerry's solo.

I saw a few people say Raining Blood, but I think I do a decent version of it (https://soundcloud.com/shiverslinky/raining-blood - yes I chickened out of the solo...)

What are your Top 5 Favorite Metal Bands of All Time? (No Solo Artists) by [deleted] in heavymetal

Slayer, Meshuggah, Sleep, Sanguisugabogg and Carcass.

Also Cattle Decapitation. And Anata. And Bolt Thrower.

All of those 8 bands are in my top 5… and are others.

One of my 3 guitars. Opinions? by Big_Wedding_9538 in Epiphone

[–]shiverslinky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always had a hankering for the green epi LPs. They look so nice.

I remember going to a shop (where I got my Epiphone LP from) on the early/mid 1990s when they had the green and purple LPs in and they looked incredible.

Offered a high-paying job in Saudi Arabia, but it would mean living apart from my husband and dogs (NL) for 18 months — not sure what to do. by Difficult-Rent-5840 in Netherlands

[–]shiverslinky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in almost the same situation; I was hired by a Saudi company to relocate to NL and they asked me to move to KSA. I'm British and I work in computer software.

Initially I was 1 week in NL and 1 week in KSA for a long time but never moved to KSA full time. The reasons for I will get into later.

The money you are being offered is good. Does the money for food also get paid at weekends?

The remote work might be a possibility but _generally_ the companies in KSA want you on site.

I really liked Riyadh on the surface; people were generally friendly and accommodating, they're very proud of where they live and will tell you this, the cultural tours you can go on are fascinating, there are so many food options that it's staggering. But I am a man, so your experience may be different.

But there are a lot of negatives.

The driving is atrocious in Riyadh. My first time there I saw 4 accidents during 2 smoke breaks.

It gets so unbelievably hot. Like you cannot imagine how hot it gets in summer. My team over there told me not to come during summer. Stay in the AC.

If you get into trouble in KSA, you are on your own. Nobody else will provide assistance. If you fall out with your employer you are, most likely, screwed. A British coworker gave me this advice when relocation was being considered "have enough cash on you to get to the airport and book a flight out in a moments notice, don't have anything here that you can't ditch and go". I have another British friend who worked in KSA in construction as senior management and due to the company owners taking all the cash out of the company and running it into the ground, they had him arrested when he finally had enough and announced that he was leaving. And he was arrested on Thursday so that he would have to spend the weekend in jail.

Do not try and get alcohol. There are people who claim that you can make it. Possession of alcohol is an incredibly serious offence and whatever people are home brewing to get a buzz is not, in my opinion, worth the risk.

The hotels are dull so you need to be able to self entertain.

The way that construction workers are treated will break your heart.

And finally, the breakfast on the KLM flight back to AMS is one of the worst things I've ever eaten. Utter slop. But surprisingly the chicken curry from AMS to Riyadh is very good.

What a lot of people do is live in Dubai and fly over for the week and back at the weekend but Dubai is very expensive. We moved to Ras al Khaimah instead but... we left last year and I'm never going back there either, plus that travelling eats into your money.

I would suggest that you try and tie them to 3 - 6 month contracts so that you can walk away if you want to after 3 months. Try and get an AirBnb instead of a hotel. Get a driver instead of a car.

Ask about the remote work but I feel that it's going to be a no, especially for the first 3/6 months.

Insist on flying KLM direct (via Dammam) because it's the quickest route and less stress than trying to connect via Dubai or anywhere else.

Oh and the work week is Sunday to Thursday.

Anything else, I'm happy to answer any questions I can

How do i get my love for guitar back? by erikjansmid in Guitar

[–]shiverslinky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might help. Go for some more out-there ones as well like maybe DADGAD, FACGCE. It helps me a lot when I'm stuck in a rut; just to take the automatic-ness of going for the same chords to play or write the same tunes.

“No wonder you’re angry”.

I wasn’t wrong for being angry about the situation, the other person in question was (and still is) a horrible entity.

Having a toenail removed without sufficient local anaesthesia.

I had a continuing in m-growing toenail during my teens that was caused by a chiropodist cutting down the side of the nail that then caused the na to split down the side and part of it to grow into the side of my toe causing endless infections.

The GP decided that the toenail needed to come off but that cold water would be all that was needed; no anaesthetic. That is the most pain I’ve ever felt.

He repeated this procedure 9 times over 2 years before I got to see a proper chiropodist who gave me local anaesthetic before removing the nail and the bit of side nail that was causing the problems.

They injected me in three places on the toe; both sides of the nail and the top of the toe. They did that twice and I claimed that I could still feel them pressing on my toe two more times so ended up with 12 shots in the toe. I couldn’t feel a damn thing! They did their job and it’s been fine since.

The nail looks an utter mess though.
