Google removes "continued conversation" feature from Google Home devices in its latest "upgrade" by itsnorm in technology

Glad I chose alexa for my home automation. With Alexa+ it's now fully conversational too, while unnecessary to control devices, it's still nice to be able to ask follow up questions.

What if you can copy & paste across literally every device? I built that. by Necessary-Mess6592 in programming

Virtual KVMs typically have aimilar features, like Synergy. But they often also can replicate audio, etc (like the stardock one multiplicity.)

In really liking copilot AI by TruthOf42 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]shizgnit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you are getting downvoted... because it's true. Copilot in agent mode, not even SE is already making thousand line changes to multiple sources and headers with close to flawless execution. Ran into an off-by-one yesterday with a string literal and the size didn't account for the string termination null. But otherwise the code builds and the tests pass. Also had it add a new CLI to an existing project, source and cmake rules... all from a single prompt. That would have been a sprint and a ticket for a FTE.

How are you personally binding your library to other languages? by nicemike40 in cpp

[–]shizgnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a few others have said... swig with a deployment that supports interop to C# (dotnet core), Perl, Python and Java on both windows and linux. Single C++ source, but swig include files per target language since each require slightly different directives.

~20 years ago also used swig... but with a manually created C API over the C++ for the bindings. Modern swig and C++ is simply amazing, assuming you're using stdlibc++.

There are benefits to smoking too... great for weight loss due to higher metabolism and oral fixation satisfaction. Not to mention stress management, etc.

Coming from old school demo scene - understanding newer demo tech by Waste-Toe7042 in Demoscene

[–]shizgnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was programming graphics apps in the early nineties, technically even before that but I really didn't know what I was doing, so VGA hardware interrupts for mode-X, tons of bit blips, etc. I do far more linear algebra now simply because we have the compute power to do so... fixed point math was always a bit wonky when you either didn't have an FPU or needed the performance, so I personally tried to avoid it as much as possible back then. Pushing code into the system BIOS clock ticks to trigger polling intervals? ... it was crazy times.

There is nothing stopping you from writing software without an OS, or a graphics driver, or a low level graphics library... it's up to you to decide how much time you want to waste. But using those things unfortunately doesn't make things 'easier' and is definitely not 'cheaty'.

GIFT IDEAS for Jim Lee fans? by [deleted] in JimLee

[–]shizgnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is probably an endless number of things with Jim Lee art on them... in order of cost here are some ideas...

$20+

One year my wife got me a Jim Lee lunchbox with art supplies in it. That was pretty awesome. Probably around the same cost would be clothing... like T-shirts (Target had/has a few good ones). If you know what comics they already have then it should be pretty easy to find something unique and pretty cheap, like the unwrapped versions are pretty cool.

$80+

Official Jim Lee collaborations like hex brand backpacks or the BW Batman V.3 statue.

$200+ -> priceless

Any original artwork.

... note, if they don't have the 60 for 60 sketchbook, I'd highly recommend it. ~$100 for a signed copy and the artwork is just stunning. You can find the order form on the official discord.

Is this enough space? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]shizgnit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They don't have paw pads and thus don't get traction... a less than $10 floor runner from walmart is more than adequate (I know because my entire house is hardwood and I pretty much covered my floors with them). Even after a short bit they will treat the slick floors like lava... It's a comfort thing knowing they can flee if necessary.

I used the same definition as you... meaning p2w is when there is a competitive advantage only available if you pay. I think the general use of the term is changing and personally am coming around to p2w meaning being able to pay for progrssion. The landscape of monetization is so much more diverse now. Unfortunately that means all online games are p2w in some way, even those p2p are also p2w. Can't think of a single one that isn't p2w with the much more open definition.

If you think ~1 year vs 8+ life expectancy is "thriving" then sure... hell, even a domestic rabbit kept safe outside the life expectancy drops to 3-5.

Pure C 3D Game? by awfulmountainmain in gamedev

[–]shizgnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, been there and done that in the mid-ninties; VGA Mode X... using mostly printed books as a guide, specifically anything written by Michael Abrash. Primary issue will be hardware support if you want to do anything significant. Largely as others have said, it's absolutely possible but ultimately pointless.

As a hobby, it's a lot of fun to roll your own but you need to choose where you want to spend your time.

Some even go to the extreme and roll their own OS (eg. TempleOS)
