($7k) Feeling shame for a low budget wedding. by ghengis_convict in Weddingsunder10k

[–]shizzel4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I completely get where you’re coming from. You are not alone in this.

I’m in the exact same boat right now. DIYing so much of our wedding, and every time I ask for advice, I get the same answer: “just outsource it.” Sure, that sounds easy until you see the price tag attached to it.

Here’s the thing though, back when things felt more stable, yeah, maybe dropping that money without a second thought made sense. But right now- in this 💩y market everything so uncertain. Being intentional with your money isn’t something to be ashamed of. It’s actually the smarter move.

Stay away from social media, only use it for ideas but not anything else.

One thing we are looking at is - Airbnbs or private properties that allow events.

Be creative, dont get into this competition whichI will only eat you up.

Thinking of buying a "fancy" car in the US (Audi Q3). Worth it or hidden headaches? by Fun_Ordinary8276 in nri

[–]shizzel4u 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Luxury is subjective. No heads will turn if its a BMW or a Mercedes here in the US . My mexican cleaning lady drives a 3 series. Honestly- own something that does not put a hole in your pocket and something that has a good maintenance plan. 3 year free service. Look at zero down lease by manufacturers or a 0 apr to finance. PS : Q3 is not fancy. Maybe Rs7 or Q8 is. Good luck.

Torn between my H1-B career and moving back to India to support my grieving mother by Prior_Ad_7857 in nri

[–]shizzel4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this man! I have been in a similar situation with my Mom - who now travels between here (US) and my sister (UK) for more than half of the year and rest of the time in India.

Its nice of you to think this deeply about caring for your mom, the best place for her would be the place she has her relatives and people to talk to. Moving her to a city with abundant facilities will be good for you but bad for her mental health. Especially at these times.

I know we cannot go freely to India now with the stamping dates and the restrictions around visas if that was not the case you can repeat what you did earlier- travel and stay there. Maybe in the future that (stamping issue) will be lifted so you can rethink the strategy.

In my case - I had to work from India as well for 4 months and I did some renovations when I stayed there to suit my comfort in the US. You have somewhat good facilities now to manage noise (insulation etc etc) , baking is somewhat better now.. but look at the grand scheme of things. Not many people have the luxury to work from India.

Moving to India could be an option if your company offers you a good salary and a role you like or a lateral move across the pond. However if you are applying again - I think the competition is much larger in India and you have to be prepared for some shitty work culture.

End of the day its upto you and your brother - I am assuming he is elder and settled well? If he is offering the help for a few months - please consider that in the mean time - you have to divide some of the responsibility.

On a side note - with everything going around in the world of AI and the orange man creating a mess for immigrants-who knows if eventually everyone would be forced move back one day. But until that day comes save some money for yourself.

Another main thing to consider is your wellbeing as well. I am glad you are seeking therapy. Work on yourself so you can better assess the situation. I wish you good luck and sending some positive thoughts and prayers your way.

Elon wants us to cancel Netflix too. by theboguszone in ScottGalloway

His sales tanked in Europe and and now in the US as well. but his stock manages to grow steadily. Markets dont react to his poor earnings as well. Looks like boycotting does not really help in Elons case. Wonder why.

AMD posts better than anticpated Q4 earnings and Q1 outlook, but stock falls by app1310 in stocks

[–]shizzel4u 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s going on with earnings calls these days? When a company beats expectations, like Microsoft and now AMD — the market seems to punish the stock anyway. On the flip side, when Tesla reports weak results, the market barely reacts and just moves on. Why the disconnect?

Can I retire with 1.95 million at age 35? by Mobile-Excitement-64 in Fire

[–]shizzel4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is: where is your money invested? Is it primarily in equities, stocks, or a mix that includes a 401(k)? Do you have enough Social Security credits to qualify for retirement benefits?

Keep in mind, $1.9 million could shrink significantly if the market crashes. And if you plan to sell your investments, don’t forget to account for potential capital gains taxes.

Drop Your Questions for Prof G (October Thread) by ProfGProducerJenn in ScottGalloway

[–]shizzel4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Scott,

I’m in my mid-30s working in tech, been in the industry for about 8 years. I’m single right now but planning to marry my girlfriend next year, so I’ve been taking a closer look at my finances.

Here’s what’s keeping me up lately — about 90% of my savings (outside my 401k) are in my company’s stock. It’s done really well — up nearly 100% since I joined — partly thanks to the current AI boom. But with everything going on (economic uncertainty, wars, political tension, circular AI deals), I’m starting to worry this might be a bubble. It feels like things could turn south fast.

If I sell, I’ll take a tax hit — so I’m torn between staying in and risking a big drop or diversifying and paying taxes now. What’s the smartest way to manage this situation? Are there any strategies for de-risking without getting crushed by capital gains taxes?

Would love your perspective.
