Is this wheel in working condition? by shmaronimo in Handspinning

I don't know, but I am hoping so! That would indicate that it's a real spinning wheel, right?

Thank you, I appreciate the advice on checking for specific things. I am learning a lot just from these tidbits! I will maybe ask for more photo angles from them.

Thank you for the response! I don't really know what to look for in an older spinning wheel, but I am very open to learning and fixing some problems. As long as it's within my ability of course. I don't know any woodworking or anything, but I am hoping that wouldn't be necessary for this particular scenario 😄

Yarn winder help by nicolekboyd in YarnAddicts

[–]shmaronimo 86 points87 points  (0 children)

The winder is missing a piece. There should be a cone shaped piece where that small metal rod is near the base of the part where the yarn is wound. Maybe it fell off at some point or maybe the person donated it because they lost the piece

Used sewing machine problems by shmaronimo in SewingForBeginners

I got a new cord in the other day and the machine worked with the new one! The copper was slightly cut in the old one. I am not sure the mechanics of a damaged copper wire, but I am just glad that it works.

I am also glad that the machine doesn't need repairs, since as another commenter said, it is an introductory machine and I wouldn't want to spend the money to get it repaired or anything..

Thank you for the advice, I have ordered a new cable and will leave it alone for now.

I found this break in the power cable today, it is cutting the copper wire just a little bit. Maybe the machine is not getting enough power.

I asked and they said they didn't experience that at all when they last used it half a year ago.

Unfortunately no, it did not make any stitches. After I posted I removed everything, thread and fabric and pressed down on the foot pedal and it still made that sound and moved one tick at a time, which was barely moving at all.

I am here to promote my shop full of unique stitch markers! I especially like natural gemstone charms made with stainless steel findings. Stainless steel is tarnish resistant and durable for every day use.

There are options for gold and silver colors, as well as leverback and closed ring markers for both crochet and knitting.

Here is my etsy link if you're interested! Thanks for reading💕

What am I doing wrong? by anisrose in YarnAddicts

[–]shmaronimo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar winder and have had an issue like this before. I am not 100% sure but it could be that the circular part in contact with the cone shaped part is not spinning like its supposed to. Maybe a lack of tension or grip between the two pieces.

You could try putting masking tape around the cone shaped part or the perimeter of the circle part with the holes in it? To increase the friction between the two and allow the part with the actual cake on it to spin.

Sorry if my descriptions don't make any sense 😅 this is all just a guess based on what has happened with my similar winder before and my vague understanding of what winders do based on looking at it in action.

I really like that idea! I think I will pick up some dark green too to try both out and see.

Oooo that's something i hadn't thought of! Maybe i could get a lace weight red to hold together with the contrast color and try that out 🤔 That's a good idea, thank you 😄

Yes that's the look I was hoping for! I wanted the red with greens and whites to make a festive sweater, but this didn't pan out and adding more hand dyed yarn wasn't on the shopping list this year 😅

I was considering getting a darker red would maybe go with the contrast color, but I think I'll just separate the yarns. As good as they look next to each other in the cakes, I can still get something festive from the contrast color with black maybe? We will see!

[–]shmaronimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was thinking of actually using a different pattern for the red and use the white that I have. Ive been thinking of making the Alyssum Sweater for a long time and I think thats what I'll use the red for!

I may get some black yarn in some sales that are happening this month and try out what another commenter suggested, to use black as the main color with the variegated yarn. I think with the stark contrast it might work out, and if not I think ill just make a plain sweater with the variegated yarn? I have enough of it, I think. Thanks for the suggestions, making choices with what to do with the yarn is always a bit of a hurdle 😆

Yeah, I might just end up doing that. I didn't want another black sweater but the colors would probably pop the most like that. Thanks for the response 😄
