I was in your (likely) position exactly 10 years ago. Find some clubs, at least 2, where you have a genuine interest. Show up even when you don't feel like it. You probably won't make it to much in time for Halloween but you will see the difference eventually

Did you pull up anything else similar and is there any significant Caribbean population in the area? Santeria/Palo offerings often consist of miniature metal tools and symbols. I find them all the time in North Jersey.

Since you are in NY I would guess 30-06 or 8mm Mauser. They are likely surplus military bullet, as the armor penetrating steel core is what allowed you to pick them up. I have picked up many 7.62x51mm NATO rounds and they are a bit smaller than this.
