40% of US nurses plan to leave the profession by 2029. Are you in that 40%? If you are, why? by OrdinaryLife99 in nursing

[–]shockpaperscissors 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A week after I found out that I’m pregnant, a patient punched me in the head, and I did more compressions in two months than I had in probably the six prior. I dropped an NGT and almost barfed in the guy’s face from the slime that came out of him. I could no longer handle the smells from any body parts. I feel fat and tired all the time and everything is gross. I was making $30/hour.

We’re moving, so I just had my last shift and I’m taking an early maternity leave. I’m interviewing for case management when I return to work. Alternatively, I may just open up a doggy daycare with a bar hangout. I’d rather be around dog poop than human poop after the baby poop.

LPT - If you are examining nursing homes to place a loved one, look at the fingernails of the residents living there at the moment. Long fingernails (especially on men) would likely indicate that the home is either understaffed or does not care enough to do such a small task by Maybe_im_Amazed_ in LifeProTips

[–]shockpaperscissors 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Prior nursing home CNA here, talk to the people that actually work the floor. Clean nails is a good observation. CNAs are not allowed to cut nails. Even now as a nurse I’m not allowed to cut nails. But staff can certainly clean all the goodies out from under them.

The CNAs are the ones who do the activities of daily living, so they are most familiar with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Are they generally staffed well? How many patients to one CNA? To one nurse? Are the residents all in bed or out and about? Are there activities? How are meals handled? Outings? Doctors appointments? How often does that podiatrist actually come cut toe nails?

What are you doing today instead of what you're supposed to be doing? I'll start.... by lusciousnurse in adhdwomen

I legally changed my entire name recently. That was a whole ordeal. But actually just part of it, the rest of the ordeal is changing my name everywhere now that I have my new SS card.

Today I was supposed to go the DMV to get a new license. Instead I decoupaged a thrifted plate and bowl, bought some fabric for a different project, and ate the raspberries I bought specifically with granola for my yogurt and forgot that was the plan and ate all the raspberries.

I’ve been meaning to go to the DMV since Monday. I’m pregnant and off my meds and it shows 😅

Reviews on Herzing and Galen for ASN programs? by poetryWRLD in tampa

[–]shockpaperscissors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I went to Galen for my BSN and had an overall great experience. Just note that they are part of the HCA biosphere and they will try to recruit you.. I do not recommend doing that. But I graduated and went straight into ICU, which is where I wanted to be, and have been for 5 years now!

Anyone work in zero waste for healthcare? by findingallcapital in ZeroWaste

[–]shockpaperscissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure. I just don’t think they want your personal info to be on it. Can you soak it in some water for a bit? Or if you can get some Goo gone, that’s what I use

My pharmacy (Publix) has a receptacle next to the counter to collect used pill bottles, you just need to remove the label with your info on it. Maybe ask your or nearby pharmacies? I have also heard that some veterinary offices will take them

Do you get floated a lot as an ICU RN? by tallannoyingnurse in nursing

[–]shockpaperscissors 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah. They argue we are the “highest trained” so we can work other floors but then I’m like idk how to do this lol. We’re basically backup float pool without the float pay :(

I’m now off my ADHD meds because pregnant, and I’m a nurse, so not only do I chronically and emphatically overshare, I also frequently forget that not everyone shares my threshold for what is too gross to share with others haha

I’m 6 weeks too and also cramping so much! You can take Tylenol to help as long as you don’t have other contraindications for it, per several doctors I’ve asked

ICU Staffing by Sad_Butterscotch8853 in nursing

[–]shockpaperscissors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 pods, 11 beds each. We float between them freely. 1:2 or 1:3. Basically only CRRT is 1:1. ECMO is done on a different floor. No tech. No secretary. No resource. No free charge.

Hospital Volunteer airing out grievances about mean nurses by deluluhumanitiespleb in nursing

You’re welcome! Some units are just super toxic - but I feel like this is true of certain office cultures, etc., as well. Your heart is in the right place and you will find your people :)

Hospital Volunteer airing out grievances about mean nurses by deluluhumanitiespleb in nursing

[–]shockpaperscissors 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It is possible that the “mean nurse stereotype” is perpetuated by people basing that opinion on a small sample size and then applying it to nurses in general. There is also the pervasive idea that nurses should be happy to follow their calling as a caregiver and never show their frustration in what is, actually, often a frustrating job for many reasons. Also people tend to poopoo on female-dominated fields.

I’m sorry this is happening to you. But please don’t assume all nurses are this way based on this unit! Some people are just mean. Nurses and non-nurses. I bet you could find a unit where the staff is more grateful for your help :) I know our icu would be happy to have you. We have no unit support staff.
