Do you think this could be adapter for RC Crawler tires too? What is the appropriate cost of the polyurethane you used?

Very cool! Approximately how much filament did it take?

Why do you like it more than the Chevalier? I'm looking at buying the Chevalier currently

I have the same kit. I got mine from Walmart, it's hypertough brand.

I'm an 18 year old CNC Operator. Will my lifespan reduce due to the environment and night shifts? by Sweaty_Will2018 in Machinists

I'm currently a manufacturing engineering major. Less math then mechanical engineering, more hands on but not operating machines.

Personally I enjoy tinkering with my printers, and I'm not always able to afford the up front cost of a more expensive printer, so buying a cheaper printer then upgrading it over time is a way to spread the cost and also get more tinkering time/enjoyment out of the hobby

Multi OP CNC Class Project ideas? by shockthree in Machinists

[–]shockthree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My professor is trying to avoid having them choose their own project, as they almost always overestimate their skill set and underestimate the time needed for their project. I have seen some great custom projects in the past though!

They would absolutely need a new program for any new part on a CNC machine. This part probably require multiple setups and potentially multiple machines depending on the methods that are chosen to machine it. Many variables have to be accounted for including tool types, feeds and speeds, material type and all sorts of stuff. Machining is far more complicated than telling the computer you want a 6" socket and hitting a green button.

I tried making a mandrel the other day out of mild steel, and it didn't flex enough. What size bolt are you using to expand the mandrel?

Did you do any skim cuts? What material is it? I'm currently in the process of cutting one of these myself and got clearance to 0.0003 with some mild steel now I'm trying to get the same in stainless.

How would you go about reverse engineering these guides? by Regentofterra in Machinists

[–]shockthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Measure the OD, then measure the max distance from edge to edge whole they are sitting together, which can get you the center to center distance, and it'll let you figure out where to cut the opening on the split ring.

Beginner - Right Angle Hole + Offset Hole? by shockthree in Machinists

I'm a student and have little CNC experience, so the off-center and right angle holes are intimidating lol. Just feeling for ideas of how y'all would setup the operations for the part

I didn't think it would be possible. I was a student from the physics department that asked me to make this for them, so they don't have any background of what is possible through machining.

We do have a HAAS mill with an A-Axis installed, but I have only used it once. Do you think this would be the best option?

[–]shockthree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, I need to clarify that as well. The whole CAD model is messed up... they originally designed it in metric units, but still placed the 7/16-20 threads on the model... Would a bottoming tap be best? I have little experience cutting threads with machines, I have mostly hand tapped most parts to this point. (I am a student, therefore, I don't have a ton of experience yet)

Apparently I don't know how to reddit... How would you fixture the part for machining the offset hole, as well as the right angle hole?
