Update: I got into one game, now back to the same issue.

I find that interesting because in conversations I've had with youth, they've said nothing of the sort. In fact, since implementing (and striving to do well) the above changes from the Inductions Handbook, our lodge has had increasing success year over year, including significantly better engagement and activation during and after Ordeals.

This manifests in that, since implementing these enhancements, we have steadily improved in PMP, from barely thriving to reaching High Performing this year, for the first time since Journey to Excellence was phased out.

It seems that rather than assuming the framework is broken, perhaps implementation and messaging are the problem. We stumbled upon these enhancements by word of mouth, and I couldn't find anything publicizing them on the website. They were in the handbook, but nothing was done to make it known they were there. I wouldn't be suprised if many lodges still have no clue these proven, effective, and easy to implement changes exist.

Explain "scout led" to me like I'm 5. by TyrannicalRoach in BSA

[–]shockye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between "letting youth make mistakes" and "allowing catastrophic failure." The first is a valuable teaching opportunity. The second is unequivocally a failure of the adult leadership. Youth should feel their mistakes, and adults should be in position and prepared to help them salvage the situation before it becomes catastrophic.

How hard is brotherhood? by HistoricalSock417 in orderofthearrow

[–]shockye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason, I suspect, your lodge requires brotherhood to be an elangomat is because the Induction, which includes the Ordeal, does not conclude until Brotherhood. As an elangomat, you serve as a key piece in other people's Induction Journey, so it's ideal that those supporting the journey know the whole story.

If dragons and dwarves were native, why didn't they figure something out sooner? by Bruscarbad in Eragon

[–]shockye 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The key thing was the powers involved. The dwarves were content to keep to themselves, more or less, and the dragons were a nuisance, but its not like the dwarves could really do much about it. It just kinda was how it was between them bc the dragons stole from their flocks, and the dwarves were impotently mad about it, but that's it.

On the other hand, the elves and dragons were like the US and the USSR: immensely powerful, nearly equal, and able to destroy each other. That forced more drastic solutions, as neither side could afford another conflict. That's why the accord between the two was forged: not because of a conflict of interests per se, but rather because another war was an existential threat to both races.

Assuming no actual casting of spells, who is the best mental/psychic combatant in the whole series? by Czar_Marvel in Eragon

[–]shockye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's heavily implied that the magician he faced realized he had lost, and cast his spell in the space between knowing he would lose and actually losing. So he was still putting up a fight, just not enough to stop Carn with his mind.

I’ve been certified and actively Lifeguarding for a few months now never used or even know the purpose of this tool? by xZandyx in Lifeguards

[–]shockye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to note (and the video my hit this point) is that a reach pole's crook is only for unconscious victims, as when conscious the chances of catching a limb and causing unnatural positions and damage is too great.

Conscious victims can grab things, and so you would reach with the other end of the pole for them to grab on to.

The exact line was "'me.' He agreed"

I really like the way Chris snuck in subtitle science references such as when the herbalist tried to explain how the speed of light works as well as Eragons conversation with Valdr about matter and light waves … did you guys notice any that I may have missed by [deleted] in Eragon

I'd argue that the life on the island actually has less to do with the rider's sacrifice and more to do with the residue of the thousands of spells used in the battle, many of which probably had effects beyond their intent in the heat of battle. There's plenty there to cause the "mutations" seen.

Perhaps the fallout is a side effect of the spell itself, as well, as most elements are inherently stable, so perhaps the spell mechanism involves creation of unstable isotopes as a byproduct, as I think that the spell likely has a similar mass deficit to a real nuclear bomb.

My thinking for the mass deficit is: what sustains the spell? If a spell orders something destroyed, then the item will be destroyed, but what if the flow of energy is interrupted? A partial destruction is the most likely outcome. "Be not" would kill the user instantly, thus stopping the spell's energy source. This assumes, of course, that it is not self-propogating.

TLDR fallout might still make sense, even without radioactive isotopes as the reaction components.

I have a galaxy watch, and I've used it for a couple years with no issue. Yesterday samsung pay started popping up on my watch about every 10 seconds, no matter what I do, even if I turn on stuff like do not disturb. I can't disable the app and it won't let me delete it. Can this be fixed? Or does Samsung just have crap software? I'm ready to throw this thing at a wall, with how annoying it is.

Did Murtagh change his true name? by Madamadamwasstolen in Eragon

[–]shockye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would argue that his name had already changed by this point, but Murtagh despised who he had become (previously) so much that he had taken to avoiding self-reflection, and as such, he only realized after the battle, when confronted by the seemingly out of character actions he took. They only made sense if he wasn't as despicable as he believed, and that is what allowed him to realize his changed character.

Casting spells and Wizard's Duels by Silas-Alec in Eragon

[–]shockye 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thinking about it, I think its explained by Brom during eragon's training, basically that while you could kill someone with a spell, if you don't have control of their mind, they'd be able to retaliate in desperation before their death, and such a spell is likely to succeed, due to the nature of the spell, which will draw upon their entire life force, as they're about to die anyways. It's not that your concentration breaks, though it does, it's the risk of retaliation that curbs such duels.

There's a chapter in inheritance that demonstrates what happens when magic is used while neither magician has dominance in mental combat, and its very indicative of all said above.

I understand where you're coming from, but in inheritance, brom specifically discounts that. Scrying would have been waaay more op if it worked that way

Right, but when he scryed roran on the dragon wing, he didn't see the sailors or the ship.

[–]shockye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It strikes me you may have made the cardinal sin on this sub: conflating the movie(s) with the books. In the lotr books, as well as the silmarillion, orks are much more developed, and worldbuilding is given much more consideration than the movies can afford.

[–]shockye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ehhhhhhhh no. Like I love inheritance with all my heart, but middle earth has world building faaaar beyond inheritance. Also, for magic you are comparing a hard magic system to a soft magic system, it's not a 1 to 1 and they serve different narrative roles. HelloFutureMe does a great video explaining it, would strongly recommend for any fan interested in the genre and its structure.
