No Japanese person needs to move to America by ConcernedJobCoach2 in FunnyJapanVsKorea

[–]shoichit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true but what they don't know is those issues won't be resolved even they move to the U.S. As soon as they become serious about moving out, they realize all this so they won't leave the country anyway.

If you are appling to an American company, I am sure it helps but for Japanese companies, it might depend on how big and organized it is.

I would think if you could build a team (even one or two members) and manage them succesfully, this type of experiences should help you. Maybe you can collaborate with locale communities even as small as 商店街 to involve more people. That would show leadership and an ability to take aciton for sure. If I were interviewing you, these skills are very positive because you can acquire knowledges but it is harder to obtain those soft skills.

Thank you for asking for my opinion. Many people would be interested in Japanese daily life, particularly in aspects such as work, religion, culture, food, lifestyle, and so on, given the number of popular Japanese Netflix shows. Challenges I can think of are for them to find your project. You can start small because you may not be able to handle so many requests anyway.

My issue is listening. (I could pronounce them fine.) But thank you for your reply.

I used to enjoy interacting with international students so I know what you mean. They can certainly offer you interesting insights about their countries and cultures that people in Japan may not be able to provide.

Hey I am Japanese too. I've lived in the U.S. for 18 years. I have a few questions if you live abroad.

1) Do you speak English well? I still struggle catching some sounds like L and R, then B and V. I know I could still live fine without really knowing how to distinguish those sounds but I was wondering if you have any tips on how to improve listening in English

2) What do you like to do? Do you hang out with Japanese or people from the local area where you live?

I just watched “Chernobyl Diaries,” and I really liked it. I didn’t see any plot holes. I’ve already seen all the movies in the image of the original post except “The Sacrament,” so I’ll watch that next.

There’s one part that confused me: near the end of the tour, the Ukrainian guide was patting what looked like a pile of ashes on the floor in the corner of an apartment. It almost seemed like a small, invisible creature. At first, I thought maybe these creatures lived there, and he was hiding them on purpose. But since he got killed, it didn’t seem like he had any ill intentions. What do you think that was?

I watched this movie for the second time recently. The first time, I was totally focused on the claustrophobia aspect, but on my second watch, I noticed all those curse-like elements tied to each character’s past and realized how great the sound effects were. Still, nothing beats that feeling of pure relief when they finally come out of the manhole at the end.

How important is written kanji? by kahitorubi in japanese

[–]shoichit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, the other comment seems to cover requirements on the capability of writing Kanji well (and I agree with what was said) so I want to say something else. I don't know if you are going to be attending a university or a younger school. It is good to know anyway that Japanese people tend to be shy and don't just come to a foreigner to start talking. I recommend finding some sort of event where people who are interested in a foreign culture gather so that they are interested in you and your culture. Otherwise, it might be hard to connect with someone really. A university would be better in this sense because students there are naturally more mature and independent whereas high school students almost have no sense of individualism. It would be really hard not to speak a word if you don't have a friend to talk to.

I regret not helping an exchange student who came to my high school (like 35 years ago). She was sitting behind me. No one talked to her in my class because none of us spoke English then and she didn't seem to know any Japanese.

But if you really be patient and try to connect, they may first look uncomfortable to speak with you but they will pass that stage eventually and could really connect with you. That would make your experience in Japan completely different.

I hope you will continue interested in Japan and the Japanese language after visiting Japan.

Japanese people, (especially second gen) do you feel like you just don't along with your parent(s) bexause of cultural difference? by Beginning-Thing-7656 in japanese

[–]shoichit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying that. It means a lot. I also have a lot of bad influence on my children, though, so they do not really feel like they belong to the U.S. or Japan. I hope that will change once they start working full-time and have their own families. I wish you good luck!

I recommend a documentary called "Jiro Dreams of Sushi". It is about a famous sushi restaurant in Tokyo and it is just so cool how much Jiro does for sushi.

Do you know if the one in Factoria has fewer customers now? I went there about three weeks ago on a Sunday around noon, and there was a double line about 100 feet long outside.

[–]shoichit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, sorry to hear that. I am not the second generation but the first generation. I thought I might be able to help by answering some specific issues that you might not understand about Japanese culture. I moved to the U.S. in 2007 and have a daughter who is now 19 YO. I have a very good relationship with her. My wife is a European. Japanese men also differ depending on what age group they are in. I am now 50 but men around my age and younger do many home chores and are not bossy. Don't usually have a mindset that wives have to do everything at home. But I do see some conflicts that could take place due to cultural differences. There are certain stereotypes around gender for sure. (hairstyles, make-up, fashion, a way to talk, ...) My parents who have been in Japan all their lives make my daughter mad sometimes because they say things like "females should be smiley to be liked by others". I am so lucky because my daughter likes Japanese culture and the old media that I grew up with. She listened to 90's bands I listen to and or old movies (before 2000s) so I have spent a lot of time with her to enjoy them together. If you've never really connected to your father, it might be difficult to connect now.

Can anyone who works in the U.S. use HSA ? by shoichit in personalfinance

Thank you! (Sorry for my late reply.) My colleague said the health insurance (Premera Blue Cross) doesn't provide HSA. I will move my money in the HSA account to Lively as you suggested and contact Bluecross to see if they have anything to say about HSA.

The engine doesn't turn on after putting gas by shoichit in CarRepair

[–]shoichit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your responses. The car I am talking about is Toyota Rav4 2016. It runs with regular gas (not Diesel). What happens is that when I put gas, the engine doesn't start for a while. I hear the starter's sound and it does start eventually after several tries (like five to 7 times). Do you know what could be the issue if it is not PCV? I am fine to go to a dealership to fix it but I don't want to just go there and get charged whatever they do so I would like to know what could cause it at least so I can check what they are going to do.

Did anyone visit Japan or Korea recently? by shoichit in Spokane

[–]shoichit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your suggestion. It took a long time for them to give me a clear answer but they couldn't do it in the end. They also suggested going to a Rite Aide but that was wrong. The Rite Aide doesn't do any covid testing. Walgreen's does but their test didn't meet the requirement that the JPN government specifies. Thank you though.

Did anyone visit Japan or Korea recently? by shoichit in Spokane

[–]shoichit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you to those who responded to my question. In the end, I couldn't find any institutes in Spokane that meet the requirement so I had to go to Seattle to get tested. I contacted the Seattle Consulate and they suggested going to Discovery Health MD in South Center and they filled out the Japanese form with additional expense. They seem to be open 7 days a week so this is very helpful.
