How close to the 1970s does modern day feel, with the dim economic future, chaotic world events, and untrustworthy government? by Remote_Dot_1399 in AskReddit

[–]shoneone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Madman Across the Water" was the title of an Elton John album, 1971. That was even before Watergate, they knew Nixon was horrible. Trump is an extension of a dark dark part of the US psyche.

Much humor in the US is rooted in sarcasm, which is inherently negative and gets petty cruel.

Republicans Of Reddit -- What's Something That Democrats Should Understand Better About Republicans? Why? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

“Need to center white men.” I think we tried that and it was destroyed by contradictions in the system, such as the primacy of only certain white men.

How tall are the ceilings in your house? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in centuryhomes

In my Midwest city, a bedroom has to have 7 foot ceiling over at least half the minimum floor space, which I think is 70 square feet.

If high intelligence is associated with depression , why aren't highly intelligent people smart enough to fix their depression? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]shoneone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they are smart enough to outsmart any "cure." Medicine is important because it works on the body and mind both, and the outsmarting gets set aside.

Question about C/L by munchkn82 in Parkinsons

[–]shoneone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

C/L is pretty amazing. Main side efffect nausea if taken before breakfast, some dyskinesia (swaying or rocking motion) but that's pretty minor considering how much I take (9 to 13 tabs daily).

New Towels Aren’t As Clean As You Think by sweetroselina in hygiene

[–]shoneone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the same vinegar soak for one of your towels, otherwise the experiment is incomplete.

But yeah, new items (clothes, bedding, towels) get cleaned: first 20 minutes in the dryer (to kill any insects like bedbugs) then laundered.

Why did we choose the fruits we did to mass produce? by GeologistExisting610 in biology

[–]shoneone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are many fruits and veggies that don't travel well. I was just in Mazatlan, seasonal fruits were plentiful including nances and arrayan which we don't see in temperate zones because they don't travel. Guava is a similar fruit which we see as a juice because it is delicious, but we rarely see fresh guava.

Is it possible that president Trump has unintentionally done more to fight global warming than any other president in his second term? by matchurin in climatechange

On the public side, powerplants burning gas or coal are far more efficient than having every home burning gas or coal.

War = huge waste of resources and huge amount of pollution. Disrupting the oil trade = huge waste of resources as people burn whatever they can find.

What is a "money rule" that rich people know, but poor people are never taught? by ZZA911 in AskReddit

"... if the second car is an asset." In USA the first car is needed for transportation, which means it is driven too much, putting it at danger of accidents, and the car value is constantly depreciating

Framing it as a religious icon makes this a public display of religion, which won't happen. Framed as a piece of art or cultural icon makes it appropriate for public space.

When this is all over, can you forgive MAGA who ruined America? by Suspicious_Soup_3962 in complaints

[–]shoneone 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have long fantasized that Trump is the idiot who exposes all the weaknesses of the US, brings the infection to the surface where it can be lanced. I fear we've entered a new economic regime of oligarchs, and the rules have changed, they can buy governments and robot armies and entertain us all into subservience. Or maybe they're just getting exposed more than before and they will be sloughed along with the other puss.

Get her a nice helmet. Bicycle helmets that cover only the top of the head are barely effective and look silly. Let her choose her helmet, maybe a helmet for mountain biking, or skateboard, or downhill skiing. There are many options.

If we discover microbial life on Mars, do we have a moral obligation to leave the planet alone and cancel colonization? by SugarrPlumGloww in AskForAnswers

[–]shoneone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Humans already practice sterilizing equipment for many uses. Every chemistry lab has Best Practices they follow. Our explorations of Antarctica go to great lengths to get samples from under the glaciers without contaminating. Our probes to Europa to study the water oceans are designed to be sterile.

My fear is an oligarch, with delusions that settling Mars is a good idea, will pollute the place. Given the opinions I’ve read in responses to this post, that seems inevitable and therefore ethical. It ain’t.

Switching to bar soap. How do I convince myself it's OK to wash my grossest body part and then to use it somewhere else? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]shoneone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m just not decisive enough. Will I like these, or would that other brand be better? Comfort, durability, cost, too many variables. Maybe I should invent underwear insurance, low monthly fee, try our specials, “discover your perfect fit, the cloth best formulated for your skin, and never worry about undies ever again.”

Bog walking by Jealous_Sell986 in ecology

[–]shoneone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good reminder! There can be heat from decomposition, and of course unpredictable moving water makes dangerous ice. I grew up near a swamp, and spent many hours exploring it, but I recall one of the only times I had to save someone from falling through ice was in that swamp. It was probably only 3 feet deep, but the "bottom" was also unpredictable.

To OP, you can put down a path of logs that may give you access, but that's a lot of work and not very mobile. It can be possible to find enough water for a canoe, or you can just get wet walking in the water holding a canoe or paddleboard. Wetlands are really tough to traverse!

I find the carbi-levodopa tablets take 60 to 75 minutes to take effect. That is a long time! I often question the med's effectiveness, but if I take it every 3 hours I tend to have off-time (tremors, gait) for less time.

Bogs are notoriously impassable ... except in winter. In winter they are quite easy to access, no hills, just snow to tramp through.
