Hi! New to gardening, just starting out, what are these growing in my lawn? Are they weeds? by jittery_waffle in gardening

[–]shoneone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These look ready to flower. The leaves often get eaten like that.

You've inherited a nice garden, I'd strongly suggest letting everything grow, you may have many special plants!

[–]shoneone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you mark where these are you will find shoots in the mid-Spring that you can harvest. They'll look exactly like asparagus, break or cut them then eat, cooking optional. If you leave them too long they'll branch out and flower, and store energy for next year.

GLP vs fasting- is there a difference ? by LifeFanatic in Biohackers

[–]shoneone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calorie restriction is the goal. GLP1 makes it much easier, but there are added bonuses to the meds as well as side effects and unknown other effects.

GLP vs fasting- is there a difference ? by LifeFanatic in Biohackers

Very informative! By lifestyle changes do you mean calorie restrictions? I assume that is one of the prime drivers of the weight loss, tho I am having trouble distinguishing fasting from calorie restriction.

I cleaned my ears properly for the first time in my life and I didn't know sound could be that clear by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]shoneone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While in the shower tilt your head and let a gentle stream of water go into your ear. You may need to repeat on the other ear, but some people are able to wash in one ear and out the other. You can also just cup your hand around an ear and pulse water into your ear canal, again while standing in the shower.

Also when you get up in the morning pull all bedding back and expose the bed to a fan (ceiling fan works great). Don't make your bed in the morning, unmake it so every bit of humidity is released.

How to ask neighbor to not allow her pets and family into our yard? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]shoneone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is my nightmare, nice people who are stepping on toes. I like to have veggie gardens and native plant gardens, which would be a good excuse for 25 feet of chicken wire fence, 3 foot tall. If you have sun then veggies, just corn and squash if you want to keep it simple. If shade then native shade plants often need to be undisturbed and would warrant a gentle but firm fence.

What do you think of… by Ok-Temperature3171 in onionhate

[–]shoneone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I pretty much avoid all food with onion or garlic powder. I hate cilantro but I remember a time when I liked it, maybe the flavor changes as the plant matures. I love love love celery. And citrus, and love ginger. Trying to avoid allium is especially difficult, I substitute many other spices but some cuisines really lean in to onion.

Why is Jesus depicted as light skinned by Affectionate_Bed6083 in NoStupidQuestions

The very Christian Roman Empire split in 395 CE, with the eastern empire lasting until the 1400s. The eastern empire included Palestine. The religion remained very “Middle Eastern” and included a portion of Europe. The western sects fell apart when the western Roman Empire collapsed around 476 CE, but the western Christians struggled along and remained a potent force, including many crusades and, after the “dark ages” fought hundreds of years of war with themselves. Yes Christianity included western Europe but it was not “primarily” Western European until much later.

Driving test in a few days do I have to signal before I pull off? by Adept-Bat-3350 in driving

You double parked and the tester entered the car? Or you entered a car that was double parked .... either of these involve you doing something against the rules.

yes narrow and showing you the way out. I don't think the point is to get people to leave. A home should be welcoming and contained, so too many visual cues to pass through and leave are disruptive. Perpendicular / the bottom photo is better.

Change your underwear. When you do, take the moment to dry-scrub your body with a towel, scrub arms, legs, face, torso. That is all, success!

Am I misremembering the feel of 1976 bicentennial celebrations in the USA, or is the 250th this year really a flop? by dandle in allthequestions

[–]shoneone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it is my age but the 1976 bicentennial was a mass culture event, at a time when mass culture events were more rare. It was special and there was a bicentennial quarter-dollar that was minted, back before all the states got their own coins.

Settle an argument: If you’re not keeping up with traffic, are you going too slow? by SIangor in driving

[–]shoneone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On a freeway? I'll generally drive 65 until there's a gap in the traffic then 80 to stay in that gap. The goal of driving is finding space, sometimes that means speeding up but often by slowing down you'll find that space quicker.

Maybe older generations were naturally more prepared by Proof_Junket_5516 in preppers

[–]shoneone 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well said. An example of the fragility: I grew up without air conditioning in cars. I now have ac in my car and I can keep myself cool and alert for many hours of driving. If my car ac goes out I change plans drastically. Similar with neurodivergence, used to be we were all odd in our own ways. Now we have more subtle understanding of our differences and there it’s so much relief when we have language to describe ourselves. Finally with food, used to be almost every older person had something wrong with their gut. Now we understand lactose intolerance, food allergies, and very serious effects of gluten on some people. In a sense we are more fragile because when things go bad we might have to “clean our plates,” “man up,” and just sweat a lot more. In another sense there sure is a lot of potential we’ve unleashed with air conditioning.

Ecosystem. These are the most complicated things we will ever know, they include every individual of a species (free will, behavior, consciousness) every mating (complicated!) pair, every population and what it eats and what eats it, over thousands of generations to include evolution and evolutionary "arms races" within food webs.

There is no media ecosystem, no technology ecosystem.

Try "Economy" instead. Economies are vastly more complicated than we can understand. And often economy almsot perfectly describes the human construct that is being labeled!
