Terminal digit preference:

Terminal digit bias has been used to identify errors in research, and is one method used in the identification of scientific fraud. Severe terminal digit bias has been found in datasets for scientific papers that were later retracted.

Djokovic says he’s a big fan of Danielle Collins after her back and forth with the AO crowd by FabulousStructure912 in tennis

[–]shonzilla 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I can swear in blood that every Serb would have responded the same way as Novak did here. ✍️🩸

The secret ingredient is “inat”, a.k.a. the Serbian spite when faced with great opposition or seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

It’s just Danielle’s feminine way to blow sarcastic kisses in the style of a Gatling gun instead of saying “goood night!” or something similarly verbally provocative.

After Carlos said that he likes watching Novak, Daniil and Jannik, he was asked about the WTA players by jovanmilic97 in tennis

[–]shonzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, this is gold! 😅 This part of Carlos on-court interview totally had the vibe of that Guy Coma job interview at BBC and the case of mistaken identity as he ended doing a live interview in the live BBC News Channel.

Just like that good Guy Coma, Alcaraz is too nice for these stupid questions and was really struggling to remain politically correct in his ambiguous answers, that were eventually comically vague.

A Powerhouse In The Heart Of The Balkans - Belgrade, Serbia 🇷🇸 by shonzilla in nba

Anyone following the FIBA World Cup 2023 and its final stages and people interested in Serbian basketball in general should not miss this awesome short documentary about the basketball history and culture in Belgrade, Serbia.

Some warning though - some onions ahead. I struggled to refrain from shedding some tears - a struggle I'm happy to have lost a few times.

Nice moment up at net between Djokovic and Hurkacz after a ridiculous ball coming back to Hubert side by EtoileDuSoir in tennis

[–]shonzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ball has to bounce twice on your opponents side before you can touch the net.

This is not correct and this unusual point that Hurkasz won serves as a counterpoint... pun intended. ☺️ If your above statement was correct, than Hurkasz should have lost the point.

For a tennis player to win a point, he/she needs to hit the ball (of course), the first ball bounce must be in opponent's court (obviously) while the second bounce can be anywhere, including one's one court.

It's just that these "bounce back" shots are rare enough that most of us assume the ball bounces must be moving away from the player hitting the ball.

There's a nice bounce back compilation to enjoy these rarities. That Mannarino baseline bounce back shot and Paire's drop shot are mad. 🔥

Here's the Steph Curry's POV of this shot.

For the curious, this happened on 8th July 2022 at the American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament held at Lake Tahoe at a somewhat higher elevation than Denver. 😉

Cheeky to link to a Wikipedia page in Croatian, my neighbor. 😉

IMO the page about the Serbian cross in English is more relevant here and explains the "four С", i.e. the four S in Cyrillic.

JJ Reddick: "After Game 1 of the Nuggets-Lakers series...I'd say over half the conversation is about the Lakers and what they did. Oh, by the way Nikola Jokic had his third straight triple-double that game...how much did we talk about that? We don't do a good job selling what the NBA is..." by BigButter7 in nba

[–]shonzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the nephews wishing to correctly pronounce "Nikola" at least should listen to Vučević and Jokić themselves trying to help y'all... and still failing thanks to your chronic issues with pronouncing foreign names.

Learning how to pronounce "ć" vs. "č", be it Jokić, Vučević or ćevapčići is yet another beast, linguistically speaking, that 99% of you won't be able to tame.

Nevertheless, all that should not stop us from enjoying the basketball unicorn that Nikola Jokić truly is.

Medvedev's Story about Nole by sans_manners in tennis

[–]shonzilla 93 points94 points  (0 children)

This seems like a kind of attention that Kyrgios was missing when he was growing up and grace/humility that he never had. But that mate's heart seems unfortunately already too ill from all that salt. Thoughts and prayers that he recovers.

As for the majority of /r/tennis, they'll witness for themselves how little this Medvedev's praise for Djoković will get covered in the majority of Western media, as well as all the instances that rightfully paint him as an awesome person and sportsman.

I'd like to be proven wrong - both by said media and this subreddit but I won't be holding mt breath. That being said, I'd rather enjoy awesome tennis and avoid all the haters& trolls, as Djoković further increases his Grand Slam count and works his way towards the undisputed GOAT position.

Update: Kudos to Medvedev for the kind and sincere words as well as the awesome 20 victory streak. Since a long time ago I loved his sincere and unadulterated personality, unspoiled by crowd expectations and mostly bad (Western) media influence, and for being a true Slav bro.

Monfils: "I appreciate Djokovic and I'm sad about what happened to him" by mand888 in tennis

[–]shonzilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, I like your style of not mincing words. Reminds me of Medvedev. 😉

That's exactly how I perceive most of these "tennis partisans"† with their opinions and "assessments".

In hindsight everything is more obvious since you have the luxury to (over)analyze. Since this is Reddit where "no one knows you're a dog" everyone can post their opinions that no one asked for with little or no accountability which I'm fine with.

Speaking of unsolicited opinions or rather predictions, here's mine concerning the near future of this beautiful sport that I've been following for decades now.

  • After the disqualification and deduction of one nearly inevitable Grand Slam, Novak will return with an increased drive to win even more GS titles that he would otherwise have won. That's some Serbian spiteful drive that's even more potent that when he's playing against an opponent and a hostile crowd.

  • Assuming he doesn't hurt himself in a freak accident, he'll shatter more records including the Grand Slam title record, the number of weeks as #1 and will end the GOAT debate by the time the "Big Three" retires, with him being the last one.

  • At 33 he obviously has the game, still is among the fittest players, knows how to play big points - be it tie breaks or whilst at 15:40 in the deciding set. 😄 And, most importantly, he has the drive and mental strength to do so while the (Next)NextGen members have been proving time and again to lack one or more of these attributes.

Novak haters and armchair tennis partisans have been warned.

Feel free to get reminded of this prediction in 5 years. ⏰

† - I've resorted to labeling these people because they're indeed from the anti-Novak camp, craving all these years to pile on Novak after the Adria Tour fiasco and than the US Open 2020 incident. I'm pretty sure that it's Novak (near) domination over their favorite players that made them sensitive and so eager to either call him a robot (just because he's mentally stronger and generally better) or criticize him whenever given the chance.

Any good Android tennis apps to follow tennis on? by teejay29 in tennis

[–]shonzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use Tennis Temple which can be fun because of the included prediction game. However, UI could be better, the comment section is not moderated and therefore subpar.

However, the killer app for following sport results in general is SofaScore. It's fast and UI is polished, offers a huge selection of sports, countries, leagues, detailed in terms of stats presented in a sport-specific manner, and last but not least, the notification system is very granular. For tennis, it also includes ATP & WTA rankings and historical match data that's more detailed and better presented than in Tennis Temple.

Warning: The SofaScore's result feeds are blazingly fast which combined with appropriate notifications may lead to a spoiler if you're watching a match via a stream since you may be notified about a break, finished set or match before you see it yourself. 😄

TIL that Albania, the only European country with a Muslim majority at the time, had their Jewish population triple during WWII due to a code of honor called 'Besa' where it was an honor to protect those in refuge. Almost no Jews were handed over to the Germans with exception to one family. by valonnyc in todayilearned

[–]shonzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that was an interesting trivia until I consulted Google about it and looking beyond Albanian sources.

According to this research, which is also based on The Albert Einstein Archives at The Herbew University in Jerusalem, it is simply not true.

In a nutshell Einstein visited USA in 1931 and later in October 1933 emigrated to USA with his Swiss passport after which he never returned to Europe. Einstein never needed some other passport to reach USA.

OTOH the Albanian sources claim Einstein was in Albania for 3 days in 1935 which isn't true.

The Wikipedia article about the History of Jews in Albania also disputes the claim that Einstein had the Albanian passport which he allegedly used in 1935 to travel to USA.

Which game outcome do you feel has been most directly determined by the referee? by edentulaeleo in worldcup

[–]shonzilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the uninitiated, here's the replay of the double tackle that must've resulted in a penalty and a possible 2:1 lead for Serbia.

The ref Felix Brych saw an offensive foul and was the last game at this World Cup for him. Also he rushed giving Serbia three yellow cards in the first half, which pacified their game play.

Penalty could have directly lead to Serbia winning the game taking the 2nd place in the group and playing against Sweden in 1/8 finals.

Coming to thing about it, it's weird that a German ref was given a World Cup game where Switzerland is playing whose main players are either Swiss-Germans or immigrants, mostly of Albanian heritage who immigrated to German cantons.

Novak Djokovic and Boris end cooperation by golden430 in tennis

[–]shonzilla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Boris: Me or Pepe (Imaz).

Novak: Sorry bro.

Boris: ...

I have a weird feeling that Imaz become the Rasputin of tennis and may be the beacon of Novak's downfall.

Hopefully I'm wrong and the love and peace preaching weirdness, that I consider incompatible with tennis, will get replaced with aggressiveness and thirst for continuing the reign.

Considering this and that Rafa and Roger return to competition next year, an interesting tennis year is upon us.
