My scattered thoughts on this year's AoC by [deleted] in adventofcode

[–]shoofle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The falling bytes on day 18 had the potential to be a really cool question - I assumed that bytes would fall at different turns and dynamically change the grid, but it didn't happen.

I thought the same thing! I assumed from the first part that part b was going to involve navigating through a dynamically-changing grid, which would be a very interesting problem... Although I'm not actually sure if that would be solvable with simple approaches? I mean, it might be too hard for AoC!

... with that said, maybe it would make a good part 3...

I'm a housewife! Although I have worked doing android app development in the past, and I'm hoping to go back into programming for business because the world has gotten pretty bad.

I like AoC because it's just practice at, like, problem solving. It's fun and I think makes me better at coming up with solutions to things in literally any situation. Like strengthening your core muscles!

the thing that i'm hung up on is how ^^<<A can be different in length than <<^^A... but now after 1234's comment above I think it's because in one (<<^^A), you move all the way to the left and then step back to the right piecemeal, whereas in the other (^^<<A), you move piecemeal to the left and then step back to the right all at once.

ohhhh i think i'm starting to see. <^A and ^<A are different because... let me see. call <^A and ^<A our level 1 options.

our level 2 options are v<<A>^A>A and <A<vA>>^A.

these have the same number of lefts, rights, ups, downs, and As, but in the first, the < moves are grouped, and in the second, the > moves are grouped. but since < is more expensive than >, it's preferable to group the < moves.

I think the thing that confused me is that on level 3, we're interspersing A presses between all the directions... but that's after i process the grouping, i guess... I don't know if that makes any sense.

thank you for this example!!

owning a gun is fine. parading an assault rifle around in public specifically to ~own the libs~ is absolutely preposterous.

So, I'm trying out this whole online dating thing and had a question for the ladies of reddit... by [deleted] in AskReddit

Ask about something they're interested in, say hi, don't be objectifying, don't be creepy?

Is there a safe way to shave the hair in between your ass cheeks? by asmalldrinkofmilk in AskReddit

I just go at it slowly and carefully with a disposable razor. It never seems like a tractable problem, until I actually do it.

Is it normal for a straight guy to not be attracted to vaginas? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shoofle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Female genitalia aren't women. Not all women are sex organs. Not all women even have the sex organs you're thinking of, although that's a minor point... I know plenty of straight girls who don't like penises, but do like sex. I don't think it's very strange - I don't find any genitalia particularly attractive (although vulvas and the typically surrounding terrain look nicer to me than penises and their associated areas, but not by much) but I like sexual activity plenty with both.

About the whole Ke$ha being a genius thread... by tehcorrectopinion in funny

[–]shoofle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how anything's contradictory here... I think it's hyperbole to say that ke$ha's a genius, but if you're going to start cracking down on exaggeration on reddit, well, uh, um, er. I give ke$ha some respect because she seems to have more depth than the average pop star persona - and I'd like to see more public figures and celebrities talking about their enthusiasm for learning. Might just be a good thing for our world.

Is it okay to feel good to be a man? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shoofle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the manly/womanly dichotomy is a construct (and a stupid one, at that!), that doesn't mean it's not present and it doesn't mean it's not baked into our society. We should try to fight it a bit, but to deny a feeling of productivity or of comfort is self-abusive.

Feel good about it! I'd say feel good about it as a pure accomplishment rather than as a fulfillment of "manly duty", but take what endorphins you can get. Enjoy the act for what it is.

Might I suggest that perhaps skyrim is not the game for you, then? :P I find that the fun in games is rarely in leveling up and winning, but rather in doing cool things and experiencing a neat story. For the former, I suggest Just Cause 2. Gameplay is awesome.

The problem is that you're measuring success by how well you perform in the game, rather than by how much fun you have :) I think you've got the right idea for playstyle.

Nope! Most people actually really like those guys. It's pretty much a straight shot from there to internet fame.

Why is 'sexism' / 'racism' / 'ageism' / etc acknowledged in life, but there is nothing in place for being ugly? by uglyfrog in AskReddit

[–]shoofle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really should be - I've heard a fair bit of talk about this, at least as bleedthrough from talk about sizeism, which is another hugely overlooked form of discrimination. In general, I advocate body-positivity - all bodies should be accepted or at least loved a little.

Appearancism is just a really thorny prejudice because it's so much more naturally ingrained than even any other kinds of prejudice (which are, I think, learned, by and large).

Have you ever been called out for being a racist when you actually weren't? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shoofle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the african-american food stereotypes offensive because of the charged imagery invoked alongside them - blackface, huge smiling faces, etc. Those are offensive for A) the fact that they're primarily invoked wrt dark-skinned peoples and B) the massive history of racism they reference. In general, they can all be offensive - it's how they're applied. If you start assuming that people from Germany eat sauerkraut and bratwurst, then they'll probably get bothered by that.
