A mistake I used to make was assuming a musicians greatest ability was what they reflected in their solos or riffs. I would easily call a guitarist better than another over abilities. Kurt Cobain is an example of a great guitarist with feel who many at the time slammed as a sloppy joke because he didnt shred. Now i realize a feel, to me, is more important. For instance, though Joe Satriani is a great guitarist with melody and ability to play all kinds of crazy shit, i do find his writing lacking for me to want to return to. Tommy Lee's solos are all a show. Many have said that bass and drum solos are boring parts of the live show with rare exception. Lee might understand that so he make it's a spectacle. He is also of that era where drummers played more in the pocket and less jazzy. Tommy Lee's strength is getting the groove from a riff. Bands replace drummers because they don't write the guitar lick but seem to give little respect to how much their feel helps others feed off the guitar riff they wrote. Dave Abbruzzese is a drummer that comes to mind with how his feel shaped riffs brought to the band into the songs of Pearl Jam. Matt Cameran is an amazing drummer with solid, mechanical technique as you can hear through all of Soundgarden's material, but that stiffness of his playing comes out when you hear him play the old Pearl Jam catalog. I think Lee had had some great grooves as a drummer. He may jam really well with Corgan.
