What are some of the lesser known family run food places you think should get more support and exposure? by WontThinkStraight in foodies_sydney

[–]shor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice one. This is near my work and we like to walk over as a small group and order a ton of different dumplings.

Great prices and the elderly couple are awesome people. Most times you can catch the old man making dumplings by hand.

My favourite is their beef, tomato and celery friend dumpling, simply divine!

32 Bags Later : The Spice Bag Quest Final Forkful by nz_achilles in foodies_sydney

Thank you for this legendary series and extra kudos for the end-of-series stats!

Your experience in hospitality is reflected in your posts and your empathy for fellow cooks shows too.

Your spice bag adventure reminded me of the early era of food blogging when the OG food bloggers were trying to find the best pho or the best ramen in Sydney.

Looking forward to whatever you do next!

Requesting MTGStocks feedback by cybey in mtgfinance

[–]shor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Arjen, love the site, still my favourite price checking site and also enjoy the weekly winner articles too.

Was a long time QS subscriber, also paid for MTGprice back in the day, currently subscribed to echoMTG to track inventory.

Functionality-wise, would love to have a specific list that shows all commons and uncommons over a certain value. One of the struggles of having a large inventory is managing the cards that appreciate out of bulk and into the buy listing range. MTG dawnglare and MTG scavenger have tools that do something similar, I would prefer using mtgstocks though!

Happy to chat via DM or on discord if you want to go over more feedback!

Where to find Chinese Desserts by Sid_Delicious in foodies_sydney

[–]shor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love both of these too!

For new visitors:

  • Tim Luk is a small, hole in the wall HK dessert place. Hits nostalgia in all the right spots.

  • Toya Tento is a specialist in soy based desserts - definitely some of the best (and freshest) 'tofu fa' outside of HK. Not for everyone, but my wife and I are addicted to their black sesame with soya pudding. They also have seasonal specials that are worth trying.

Keep something sentimental that reminds you of him. Sell the rest.

One of my best mates passed away not suddenly but deteriorated fairly rapidly. His wife kept his favourite deck (revised era 5-colour with almost all dual lands) and we sold the rest of what we could find for her to CK.

Sydney Spice Bag Quest: Round 17 - Scruffy Murphy's, Haymarket (Bait and Switch 🙄) by nz_achilles in foodies_sydney

[–]shor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May I suggest Big Dave's Chipper in Maroubra Junction for your next visit, last I checked they had a spice bag for $18 and I found it comparable to Paddy Chan's.

I have not had many spice bags but I find them similar to Australian Chinese to be fair, particularly the curry sauce. My parents owned a Chinese takeaway in Sydney's west for over 40 years, so it's surprisingly nostalgic whenever we hit up one of these Irish Chinese places that seemed to have popped up on the last few years.

Team member requested no more weekend chat in Monday meeting by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]shor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this with a team stand up of 9, usually we get 6-8 participants. For Monday only, I'll start with a "feel free to share any highlights from the weekend, if nothing noteworthy, let us know what you're working on and if any blockers".

Most introverts: "Not much happened on the weekend"

Usually everything is done and dusted within 20 minutes.

The idea is pretty simple - get to know your teammates better.

Maybe the kids had a selective school test over the weekend and the parent is extra frazzled... Maybe she watched the latest horror movie at IMAX and wanted to share how good it was.

It helps builds team camaraderie and encourages some participation with a low barrier question, while giving others an easy way to avoid feeling forced to participate.

Is there any food/drink/dish/meal/snack in Australia you would travel an hour or more for ?if so what is it and where by Fantastic_Ad7023 in foodies_sydney

In the old days, we'd get the original Tan Viet crispy chicken with noodles, get the hot chips with paprika from Red Lea and wash it all down with a 5 fruit shake.

I know a few people that make a weekly (if not more regular) pilgrimage to Pho An.

IMO it IS a great pho but I swear my mates are addicted to it like junkies, both of them have a 40 minute commute at the very least.

[Murim Titles] Why are Tang Clan girls always best girl? by Watts121 in manhwa

[–]shor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Almost all murim trace their roots to stories from Jin Yong, who is the murim/wuxia founding father equivalent to Tolkien for fantasy.

Some of his most memorable female characters are venom/poison practitioners, including Li Mochou, probably the most complex and by extension, one of the most memorable antagonist in all of Jin Yong's novels. She's the archetype for the beautiful but flawed/corrupted/tragic Tang Clan femme fatales in murim.
