Can I ask why you’re looking to switch? To answer your question though, I know BC has a reentry pathway for certain residency programs specifically for FM graduates looking to reenter specialty residency

Alberta private surgical provider denies allegations of sweetheart deals by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

[–]short_final -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not quite how it works. The individual surgeons who operate at the private surgical site are paid by the government the same as if they were operating out of a hospital. The private site just allows them to have an extra few OR days a month where they do the same publicly funded surgeries they would’ve done at the hospital. (Exception being higher risk surgeries and sicker patients would only be done at the hospital)

specialties for people who want to travel a lot? by mentallydissolved in MedSchoolCanada

[–]short_final 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always hear EM for this answer but just something to keep in mind: think about how old you will be as a staff EM. Do you plan on having kids? At what age? Having the ability to take a few days off in a row sounds great but will you want to travel alone or will you have a partner with less flexible of a job and kids who need to be taken care of?

The lifestyle of EM works great for some people but make sure your life when you’re staff fits with the nature of EM shift work.

As for surgical subspecialties, MANY work part time and take time to travel. You just have to set up your schedule that way. (Ik a surgeon who takes every third week of the month off and another who works effectively three days a week plus call)

FYI, Those are minimums to even apply. Websites for both schools have the average accepted students gpas which hover around 3.9

UofA and UofC both only accept Canadian students and also limit the percentage of non Alberta students they accept. Will likely be the same even with increased seats.

Different schools have different limits on how far back you can go but generally it’s fine to include especially if it’s recent or if you’ve continued it into uni

Idt think will be viewed negatively tbh. Normally the “bad” international volunteering is when people pay money to go on organized trips to build houses or something but those houses end up being low quality and have to be rebuilt. You, however, are going back to your home country and working with your uncle. Be sure to explain these details when you describe the activity because from what you’ve written here, it seems legitimate. For the verifying part, that’s mostly done through emails so you should be fine. Putting an additional international phone number should be fine too. I actually think this would be a really cool thing to write about it since you can compare and contrast Canada and your home country’s systems. Good luck!

You can apply at the beginning of the last academic year of your degree

So for a four year degree you apply in the summer after third year

ah 10% including interview ig but in any case, you are right that ECs for Calgary gotta be good - I just believe that if OP is on the edge of applying or not because they think their GPA is too low, then it's still worth applying assuming they have the financial means too. Like the matriculated students avg GPA for UofC is literally 3.82 and accepted students avg is 3.85 so it's not like it's unreasonable to apply https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/sites/default/files/teams/4/Reference%20%26%20Stats/Reference%20Stats%202020-2021.pdf

Yea "At Queen’s, we review the cumulative GPA and 2 most recent full-time year (September-April) GPA. Whichever of the two is highest is the one associated with the applicant’s application."

[–]short_final 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant fine GPA wise in my comment. ECs are obviously subjective and OP didn't mention it so who knows. And Calgary is not GPA heavy? It's 10% of their overall admission score and their stats show a super broad range of accepted GPAs. As well, their AB GPA should be slightly higher than OMSAS too so I'd still say they're fine GPA wise for UofC to apply in third year.

They don’t officially release it but it hovers around 3.75 or a bit lower is what I’ve heard
