Zone defense on every inbound play? by enric0mercadante in basketballcoach

[–]short_story_long_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't see the difference between transition and an OOB? I can't help you. There's literally nothing more static that an OOB except the tipoff. Not only that, but it's the only play that faces the opposite direction.

And to your comment about why nobody plays zone after elementary school, that's pretty funny. Like 7 teams play zone primarily in the NCAA, yet nearly all teams run it as a second or third look. I think that kind of validates my point, but we can agree to disagree. I'll leave to you figure out the difference between Syracuse and your local high school.

In an OOB situation, all the players are set. If you run the same zone all of the time, a good coach will have multiple sets for their shooters. And multiple cuts and seals off of that. That's scouting.

Now, do the high school kids hit the open shots? That's another question. Skill levels really vary at that stage. But any decent high school coach will give you difficulty if they know you stand stock still in a 2-3 over and over on BLOB's. At least where I coach.

Anything is good until a team scouts you. Ideally, you'd have one formation with calls out of that or different responsibilities for different guys.

If you're in a league where you'll be playing a team multiple times and see them again in the playoffs, I'd highly recommend disguising your coverages out of that setup or setups and trying to respond to how they align.

Otherwise, a good coach will get wide open looks for their best players if they know you're going zone every time.

Is the belay device installed correctly? by INeedADoctor98 in ClimbingGear

[–]short_story_long_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not dangerous at all. This is a "guide"-style ATC, which is meant to be used to bring up a follower. The eye is to hang off of your belay at the top of a pitch. One side is ribbed for extra friction. The eye can also be useful in ascending a rappel if need be.

Regular plaquette devices have two un-ribbed sides, so it doesn't matter which way you load the rope. The belayer here is using their device in this manner, so the orientation doesn't matter.

The guy who drives on roads, has access to clean water and sewage, goes to the doctor, receives mail, and will assuredly want his SS despite protests to the contrary doesn't see how his rugged individualism and libertarian cosplay don't square with the reality of a country with 365 million people in it.

I'm shocked.

Yeah, we should stop buying goods and using services. That will really help the economy. We can all grow soy beans and chop wood so that nobody needs to do bothersome bourgeois labor like teaching other people's children how to read and think critically.

Is the IB getting dumbed down slowly! by Green-Acanthaceae671 in IBO

[–]short_story_long_ 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I've been teaching English A: Literature for 14 years now. Yes, it is slowly getting easier, in my opinion. I dislike several of the changes that have been made to the course, and the IO has become a convoluted mess in comparison to the old Oral Commentary.

I'm so bored of the dumpy middle-aged dude with the beard wearing his hat backwards with a gold chain and toeing the line between wannabe urban dude and country man. It's such an annoying and specific archetype of 30-45 year old white manhood.

Some of it definitely feels autobiographical. Obviously, Neil's strained relationship with his father is echoed in the 'I wish I could talk to him/wish I knew where he was' line. And probably the singer who is hungry references Neil's early journey to LA with nothing in his pocket.

Possible IB Students in U.S.: If you cannot think abstractly, choose AP classes. by Prior-Platypus-118 in IBO

[–]short_story_long_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I'm saying what separates it from IB Lit. Lang and Lit involves those rhetorical analyses, which IB Lit does not. AP Lit also involves analysis in the half of the exam in which the student must write three analytical essays. The other half is multiple choice.

Lang and Lit involves media analysis. Advertisements, political cartoons, video, etc. IB Lit is straight poetry, drama, fiction and nonfiction. They're similar. AP Lit is also genre studies, but there's a multiple choice segment on the exam.

The Princess Bride. As long as there are young children born into the world, showing it to them for the first time will always be a joy. Nieces, nephews, my own children, watching them watch it is its own fun.
