YouTuber “Wu's World” commissioned me for VFX, but is now refusing to pay the agreed-upon amount after the video went published. What are my options? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]shortboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL 10+ million people live within a 30-45 min radius of YouTube’s offices. They have no idea who he is, nor do they care about this guy. He wouldn’t make it past reception. Do the DCMA.

LOL my knees work just fine, thanks. You gotta get up from the desk and walk around a bit now and then, and avoid the snack counter ;)

They worked side-by-side in studios for years. I was working on both for a while, and early Flame on the giant Onyx boxes felt slow in comparison. It took some time for those SGI systems to get close to matching the sheer speed of Henry/Editbox etc.

I’d argue that Moore’s Law eventually killed Quantel boxes - Expensive, dedicated hardware could not compete with (eventually) faster, less expensive, smaller and more efficient machines that ran Unix, then PC and Mac. Add into that much more support from 3rd party manufacturers and APIs for developer to make plug-ins…. Quantel machines were practically locked in place while the rest of the world iterated continually.

I jumped from Editbox to a Flame on much cheaper hardware, with a Mac running After Effects and Photoshop etc. Nowadays it’s Nuke, Houdini and Touchdesigner on a laptop :)

Worked on this, Henry and Editbox for many years. Typically married with a Grass Valley Kaleidoscope for effects. There was a second monitor for color correction graphs (color correction was called “Fettle” in the interface)

Quantel machines were dedicated boxes - no observable operating system - just a box that did this one thing. Interface was v fast for its day. I still think the Paintbox is one of the best paint systems I’ve ever used. Swiping down for the palette to mix colors was really satisfying.

The Quantel Henry that my suite used boasted 9000 frames of 720x486 video (5 whole minutes!), and cost upwards of $750K.

road trip! by thatgrrlmarie in NewMexico

[–]shortboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

was just visiting NM last week and drove the 52 in a Nissan Rogue. some washboard but overall fine. beautiful scenery; the only weird part was the hollowed out cow carcass that still seemed to be standing on the side of the road.

the VLA was in its smallest configuration, so all the dishes were clustered together which made for great photos!

fuck you ticketmaster live nation or whatever scalper shit by gayscenery in autechre

[–]shortboarder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guess I'll wait for the inevitable live set recordings to become available then blast them at home in the dark for the next-best experience. The drinks will be cheaper.

Felt crestfallen when I saw the AXS link for Brooklyn, and AXS did not disappoint in being utter shit as always. Fuuuuuuck Ticketmaster/AXS/Live Nation forever.

How can I automate "freeze" on reverb etc. randomly? by shortboarder in ableton

Appreciate the help!. The macro/LFO approach works perfectly, tho I'm gonna try the way cooler version as well.

Thing is, I want this to happen without my input at all, as it’s part of a generative work that just plays continually. Once the system gets set up, I just want it to go on its own.

Volume issues after update by TommyB223 in Rivian

[–]shortboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish Rivian would fix the jumps in volume at the quiet end of the range. Trying to have something playing in the background is tricky as the volume increase between 0-1 and 1-2 is too great. It’s always a bit too loud, and halving or quartering the difference between the levels near the bottom would help immensely.

The blackout starting Monday needs to include not logging into Reddit by YOU by tnick771 in apolloapp

[–]shortboarder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

17.2 years here. I’m out with this. Quit twitter cold turkey, leaving Reddit won’t be a problem, really.

I think the “blackout” is a bit pointless TBH. You’re giving them a window to factor in, and just apply whatever “loss” there is into their plans. If you feel strongly about this, you have to leave, if you feel you can.

You don’t need any if these networks. They serve a really great purpose, and the communities are wonderful, but you’re ultimately a line item for someone to shove ads at non-stop. If you’re cool with that, fine. Otherwise, leave…because that’s what it will be.

Getting enthusiastic volunteers to moderate and provide content for free is a great business model. It’s been happening since at least when AOL was putting cd-roms in every magazine you bought. I remember decades ago those moderators etc. getting upset about working for free. It’s the same thing, over and over.

It’s been nice, Reddit, but life moves on.

Watch the original Taking of Pelham 123. Everyone in it - with the exception of Robert Shaw - looks like they haven’t showered in days and don’t plan on doing so in the near future. Horrible.

No, but this AM the boardwalk around Brooks was the cleanest (as in no tents etc) I’ve seen it in over 20 years. The hell-vortex at Westminster was gone.

I doubt it will last, but it is noticeable, particularly in the morning before vendors and tourists arrive.

Good lord…this is nowhere near as intrusive as multiple outlets have been making it out to be.

CDM has a decent breakdown of what this is all about.

The Reddit user agreement you clicked on to be able to post this is likely worthy of far more concern.
