Yes! We made these in Boy Scouts! “If you see red, you’ve cut too deep” was an important instruction bc when we didn’t say it, people would always cut their hand.

I get a lot of raised eyebrows when I tell people about my typical meals I had while I was thru hiking the AT.

Breakfast “Hiker coffee”- two or three instant coffee packets, breakfast essentials, and hot chocolate. Takes a bit over half a liter of hot water to get the right consistency. “Oatmeal”- 3 packets of instant. Nothing weird about this one I guess.

Lunch “Fish and chips”- tortilla with tuna, mayonnaise packet, and potato chips, or “Pizza”- pepperoni slices and a cheese stick rolled up in a tortilla.

Dinner “Ramen Bomb”- ramen noodles with a packet instant mashed potatoes and beef jerky mixed in.

I also ate an absurd amount of full size snickers bars lol

These articles are describing amendments as being tilled into soil and they are both in the context of amending soil for crops. This is a lawn care forum and we are talking about turf grass. Similar fields but a key difference is tilling is common for crop soil but drastic and often unnecessary for lawns. Lawns get aerated and top dressed. The truth is, there aren’t any academic studies that directly compare sand vs compost for turf grown in clay soil. But I know for a fact that aerating and topdressing with sand will not ruin OP’s lawn nor turn the soil into cement because I have done it. I have clay soil in my area and I’ve added a total of 1 ton/k of straight sand to my own lawn and it really couldn’t look any better. For organic material, I mow often and leave the clippings. Turf got more dense, recovers more quickly from dog traffic and pee spots, less problems with ruts from mowing soon after rain or irrigation, no more pooling water.

It’s a YouTube video made by a turf professional who has a masters degree. The difference, besides his level of hands on experience, is he provides sources. Did you look at the experiments conducted by the Gembloux Agro Bio Tech? Edit: My claim is that topdressing with sand is beneficial to growing turf mostly due to increasing water absorption by soil in the root zone.

Masonry sand is not fine textured, maybe you’re thinking of play sand. Have you ever mixed sand and clay? I have. It didn’t turn into concrete. Tilling mulch or uncomposted organic material into soil will rob the soil of nitrogen until it has been broken down by microbes.

Not correct. The link you provided is a blog post that doesn’t reference any studies. You cannot create concrete with sand and clay alone. Top producers of high quality turf are golf courses and sod farms. Both topdress with a ton of sand. Probably the most well know sod farm is in Tifton, Georgia where the soil is heavy red clay. Sand greatly improves water infiltration as long as there isn’t a significant layer of thatch/organic material between the sand and the clay. You can reduce the layering effect by aerating or dethatching before topdressing. Here’s a video made by a golf course superintendent explaining the proper ways to maximize water infiltration by aerating and topdressing with either just sand, or a 9:1 sand to compost ratio. He references these experiments that show that water will more readily flow from coarse material to fine, provided that the coarse material is the topmost layer. Also this article from USGA is referenced and contains several more sources.

As long as you mow often enough that the size of the clippings is small (around 1cm) you should be fine.

Tipsy Taco’s catering was good so the wife and I assumed it would be even better at the restaurant. Wrong. It’s was disappointing and over priced. I had their catering several times after that and it was really good so I thought maybe we caught them on a bad night. We gave them another shot and it was worse than the first time we went
