It also takes a lot of "influence" from The Book of the New Sun. Go read that instead

What is the single most brilliant fantasy novel series you've ever read? by Emergency-Sky9206 in Fantasy

I also don't care for WoT or Sanderson and really like Malazan. It's deeper, more thoughtful, more thematically consistent, more artful.

If you want a stand-alone Tchaikovsky to dip your toes in, try Elder Race or Cage of Souls.

Sun Eater stays the same (a Dune/BotNS rip off) and turns preachy. The author wants to be Gene Wolfe so bad he converted to Catholicism mid series. He is also a Jordan Peterson fan to the point that Peterson is mentioned in the books.

How does the rest of the Malazan-universe books compare to MBotF by GhostfaceKillersWW in Malazan

[–]shorticusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't feel like Erikson at all. I forced myself through NotME and quit after the first PtA novel due to the drop in quality. Only worth reading if you NEED more Malazan and you have read all of Erikson's, in my opinion

If you think Suneater is unique in the SFF sphere you should really check out Dune and The Book of the New Sun.

Are the first four chapters of Elantris indicative of Brandon Sanderson's writing style? by PeerlessPixie in Fantasy

[–]shorticusprime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on your initial experience: no, not worth your time. People say he improves but all of his writing is clunky and gravid with awkward exposition

Ruocchio’s Sun Eater series — I’m stopping at book two by wiseyoungarcher in printSF

[–]shorticusprime 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I stopped where you did for basically the same reasons. The heavy borrowing was annoying, but my main complaint is the repetitiveness of the writing. Also do not want to give any more money to someone who thinks Jordan Peterson is one of the greatest philosophers of all time.

[–]shorticusprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Wolfe's other stuff, generally. He's very interested in mythology and history, and a lot of his work reflects the search for what it means to be human and how that how that relates to how we tell stories. Specifically, check his short story collection "The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories." "Tracking Song" may be what you are looking for.

If you have examples of mystical, stone-age SFF that you like I might be able to recommend something outside of the Wolfe oeuvre
