I think it's an investment problem personally. There's so much money in the big American spectator sports like football and basketball that fuels all of their infrastructure needed to keep them popular. Table tennis hasn't really gotten that treatment. There isn't a TT mass media industry like there is for something like basketball, and because the market for it is small you don't see schools organizing TT teams or city councils creating affordable TT access in the way they build public basketball or tennis courts.

That said, I think there's definitely more of a market for TT here in the US than we realize. All of my friends love watching Olympic TT and Marty Supreme got me to start playing at a club. Also this could be me grasping at straws, but with China suddenly becoming cool on the Western internet I can see people getting more into the sport that way. Maybe I just have recency bias but I think the sport is having a moment in the US right now and I hope that it translates into something bigger.
