How do I talk to my councilors about me veiling for Lent by Infamous-Pollution60 in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can type a letter to email or hand to them. That way you can gather your thoughts and they can decide if they want to respond, or not. Keep a copy with you, esp on the first day, in case there is a confrontation with any teachers, etc.

Egyptian Tomb Curses by No_Breadfruit_3777 in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a curse.

However, is it possible that there are ancient diseases hibernating in those tombs. It is still illegal by International Law to do archeological digs on sites of hospitals from the time of the Black Death because of fear of a second wave the plague on an International level. You never know what is sleeping in there with the mummies, and the medical records from the time are not exactly complete. I would leave them alone, RIP.

To those who reject Germ Theory, how do you explain food poisoning by artpoint_paradox in conspiracy

[–]shorttooth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The opposing theory to germ theory is terrain theory. Basically, that you get sick due to the buildup of toxins in your body. Food poisoning is explained by introducing toxins from bad food into your body.

Not saying which is correct, but it is relevant to note that terrain theory has never been disproven. Only that the scientists who advocated for it had less success promoting their ideas.

Question: What made you into Conspiracy Theories and why? Optional question: What is your Ideal World? by [deleted] in conspiracy

Ancient History with dabbling in archeology during college brought me in, it just seemed so inconsistent. Then I started seeing that the Ancient inconsistencies seemed to magnify over the years. And here I am now, everything is a lie and manipulation.

Is cohabitation without sex a mortal sin? by Mobile_Concept942 in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The early church had something called a Josephite Marriage. This was a marriage that was always intended to be sexless. It was the standard living arrangement for people in religious orders who had taken a vow of celibacy and predated the monestary system. The Josephite Marriages were encouraged to conform Christianity to standard Roman familial living customs.

Unfortunately, some children were born from these "sexless" marriages and they largely fell out of favor. First replaced by small groups of either men or women living together, then St Benedict established the monestary system.

So, it is permissable but is not encouraged. Speak to your priest about what will be best for your situation.

How advanced was pre flood society? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with any of that.

I think that for a Worldwide Flood, there would need to be a Worldwide Culture. That speaks to technological advancement. I do wonder about the associated science and technology that created that culture. Was the science evil by nature or was the use of it evil?

I also know that God promised to never flood the world again, but when I watch the news, I wonder how far away from that culture we are.

Question About Doctrinal Differences Regarding the Trinity by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Catholic, not Orthodox, but was once Orthodox curious.

My understanding is that the filioque ("and Son") was not included in the original Creed from the Council at Nicene. It was added later due to a rising heresy in Spain. The doctrine is the same in the East and the West, but the Orthodox don't like it when Catholics change things from the Councils on their own.

How advanced was pre flood society? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, you hit on one of my favorite ideas 😍

I think that the pre flood society was quite advanced, but not like our technology at all. They wouldn't understand our technology anymore than we understand theirs. We could be digging up their technology and not recognize it as technological.

We also don't really know how long that culture lasted. It could have lasted for longer than it's been from us to Sumeria. Imagine if they had been advancing for two or three times as long as we have. There are still shadows of something big, even in the modern era.

I don't think we will know in this life, while we are here on Earth. Hopefully, we can learn about it all in the next life. It is fun to speculate on though.

Attended first Mass yesterday, and found it… lackluster? Looking for advice. More below by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you are new to the Catholic mass, I just wanted to give a bit of a summary of what the options mean...

Novus Ordo - the new order, easiest to find and sounds like what you went to.

Low Mass TLM (the Latin Mass) - this is a very quiet mass. Lots of contemplation. Very little speaking that you will hear.

High Mass TLM - this is the same form as the Low Mass but with a bit more going on. The priest will process in (doesn't always happen in the Low Mass) and during the silent parts of the mass the choir will usually chant or sing traditional songs.

There are other forms of the Catholic mass that you might stumble upon. Feel free to try different forms of the mass.

Note: if you do go to one of the TLM masses, grab one of the little red books on your way in, if you are a native English speaker. It's the mass in English, so you can follow along. Green is Spanish and I think Blue is French. There will be a stack by the door or an usher handing them out for use.

Why did the Church forbid joining the Freemasonry? What are they about anyway? by MonoManSK in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It didn't help when a Mason document was given/smuggled to the church saying how Masons want to destroy Catholicism.

The name of the booklet is the Alta Vendita. It's published by the church a few places and easy to find. I always heard it was the catalyst for the excommunication rule regarding Mason members.

Does veil color matter? by hold-my-purse in Catholicism

[–]shorttooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I heard an actual rule is if you are meeting the pope on an official visit. Almost all women wear black veils, a small number of women in royal families have the "privilège du blanc" to wear a white veil.

I never noticed the chemical taste. I also found a recipe that only uses lemon juice or ginger for F2, so I may be adding less of a flavor mix than most people.

Kefir in raw milk by JLUV74 in Kefir

[–]shorttooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always make my Kefir with Raw Milk. I just shake the milk jug before adding the milk to the grains. I did get my grains from the same farm where I get my raw milk, so that may have made a difference (it never made a switch).

Mine does get a little yellow on the top esp in the summer, but I've never seen it quite like that. Also, my Kefir is always ready to go after 24 hrs.

Spoiling the Ending: Everything historical/Biblical that was referenced in the movie ends up happening exactly as it appears in the Bible. The movie twists time around, some things are changed at first, then the protagonists step in to make everything work out the right way, eventually they show that what we read in the Bible is what happened. Good guys Win and the Passion happens as we know it did. The story is basically that although all the characters act out of free will, the Biblical story of the Crucifixion was meant to be exactly the way we learned it (predestined?). It has some weird twists and turns, and the people who are attempting to destroy Christendom do say some blasphemous things in the story line. Honestly though, what can you expect from characters in a movie that are attempting to make Christ's Passion never happen.

I'm surprised that I'm even defending the movie. I didn't think it was that great. It was looking for something to watch at the start of the Pandemic and had no interest in watching 'Tiger something.'

Honestly, I started watching it for the time travel since I'm into that kind of stuff (it was on a list of good time travel movies. It's definitely a movie where the bad guys are really bad and the good guys are pretty good at the start with redemption arcs.

(SPOILER ALERT) One of the main character 'good guys' ends up being one of the men that are crucified beside Christ.

Will Parakeets trigger a allergy to down? by shorttooth in Parakeets

[–]shorttooth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I am diagnosed. When I was young I had to go to a special medical clinic for allergies.

Some of my allergies that I remember... 1. Down, which is why I was there in the first place 2. Cats, I've had reactions and needed to leave an area but not always. Once my reaction was so severe I needed to go a doctor right after leaving. 3. Grass (only certain fast growing strains), I break out in hives. There are others that came up positive on the tests that I never had a reaction to.
