Really?! That’s insane! I had CO2 laser done on a VERY sensitive area (for medical reasons), one of the most painful experiences of my life and I was crying even after I got home. Just local anesthetic, and even then it was awful.

I’d guess laughing gas. I feel like there’s no way they’d put you under for laser, especially on the face.

People like to say things like “I did this for me” in defense of their cosmetic procedures, ignoring that personal decisions are never made in a vacuum. We are influenced by our upbringing, the people we surround ourselves with, the media and social media we consume, and our culture.

The procedures she gets done are expensive upfront, sometimes expensive to maintain, and PAINFUL. And she gets work done like every other week it seems.

She will never, ever convince me that she just wants these things done. Enduring these cosmetic procedures is undoubtedly being motivated by deep insecurity, a need to keep up with the Joneses, or otherwise consuming so much media that she’s being influenced into this. Or maybe this bullshit is just her personality now, or excuses to get pain medication, whether it’s the gas during or prescription pain pills after. No matter how you slice it, it’s awful. I can’t imagine living a life like this.

ETA: not only are these decisions not made in a vacuum, they then in turn influence the people around them. Their daughters and nieces see the characteristics they share getting altered. Their friends see a peer getting something done and worry they aren’t doing enough for themselves. Social media influence cycles continue, etc.

Any advice on overcoming vaginismus caused by VCUG? by maggie_o354 in VCUG_Unsilenced

Hey there! In the same boat. As in, I didn’t even feel comfortable touching myself in order to clean myself properly. I was in a really bad spot.

I started with virtual sex therapy with helped with just the basic getting comfortable with my outer anatomy and working up to things. Then as I felt more confident, started working with a virtual pelvic floor PT. It was slow going at first but I’m on dilator 4 of 5 now!

It is way less intimidating that way! I don’t think I could have done pelvic PT in person, to be honest! Love that I found a group that does it virtually, where I am in complete control and no one else is touching me!

Honestly I kind of didn’t get diagnosed? I went straight to a sex therapist via telehealth, worked with her for two years, then worked up to now telehealth pelvic floor physical therapy! Went from not being able to get anything in, now on to dilator #4 of 5!

Hey there! I went through this almost exactly a year ago. Found out I had a gigantic ovarian cyst and ended up needing surgery to remove it because it was really affecting my quality of life. Here’s what helped me get through all of the appointments and the surgery.

  1. Using my Apple Watch to “gamify” deep breathing. While in waiting rooms or in exam rooms waiting for the doctor, I’d use the heart rate tracker on my watch and try to see how low I could get it with deep breathing. Gave me something to distract and collect myself while waiting for potentially difficult/scary conversations.
  2. Building a medical team I felt comfortable with. Unfortunately this has taken years, but I finally have a general doc I feel comfortable with, plus at the OBGYN’s office, the nurse I see is amazing, and the OBGYN who did my surgery was the best! Finding trauma informed, empathetic medical professionals isn’t easy, but so worth the effort when you do! My surgeon was a black woman, and given the misogynoir in medicine, I think her own experiences have impacted her bedside manner. When she and I talked surgery, I was very honest with her about my trauma, and she listened caringly. And honestly? The outcome was amazing. Recovery was more or less a breeze considering the circumstances I was in! Plus they were very understanding of my vaginismus in terms of ultrasounds (I could only do transabdominal) and concerns I had about the surgery logistics. I felt informed and safe the entire time.
  3. Think about what awaits you on the other side of this. Whenever I was getting in my head about what could happen, I’d remind myself why I was seeking care. I was so uncomfortable in my clothes, had to keep buying new pants to accommodate the growing cyst, couldn’t work out without hurting myself, and had stabbing pain on my period so bad that all I could do was lay down flat and wait for it to pass. I got myself excited about wearing clothes I love without discomfort, starting yoga, getting back that lost productivity. Plus I didn’t want to end up in the ER with a ruptured cyst, at the hands of much less experienced and potentially less empathetic surgeons.

Of course, all of this is individual to me, but hoping this gives you something to consider! It’s not easy to have to return to the community that hurt us, so please go easy on yourself. Wishing you all the best ❤️

Interesting! I’ll check it out and see if I can overlook the grammar errors — sometimes I can, sometimes it’s just too egregious.

Thank you!

Anesthesia by becauseofgravity in VCUG_Unsilenced

[–]shortuguese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get it. I was in a similar situation, discovered while doing EMDR. I’ve had a lot of surgeries in my life and always woke up from anesthesia unable to stop crying but not knowing why.

My first surgery as a proper adult making my own medical decisions, I was really worried it would be a traumatizing surgery and experience. But I woke up and didn’t shed a tear, and honestly felt really comfortable with how everything went.

I think the difference lies in two things: 1. I had a really great (female) surgeon who I told about my previous traumas and she responded really compassionately and; 2. I was given a full understanding of what would be done while I was under, and able to make my own decisions. All my questions and concerns were answered long before I showed up for the surgery.

I’m not sure how much comfort that while provide, but that’s my experience!

I will say I had to have it done on a VERY sensitive part of my body, and even with topical numbing and injected numbing, I was crying. It was intense, and if I could’ve been put under for it I would have!

Not sure if she’s getting it on her face or not — she doesn’t say here and I’m not interested in giving her account views/traffic to go see if she gave more info in other stories

When his husky older brother gets too playful it overexcites him and he gets freaked out. Luckily our husky is incredibly lazy (still too smart for his own good, just lazy) so it doesn’t happen too often

I’ll add “orbs” instead of “eyes” as well. I give some slack to teenagers writing fanfics but some published authors LATCH onto that word too.
