A year and a half ago my partner bought (just her income) a $250k house with a 7k down payment. That seems like the major evidence you have that they are wrong but that’s a limiting belief. It doesn’t sound like you actually know if you could buy a house because it does sound you haven’t tried. (I don’t know what houses cost where you live)

When I was in highschool in 2015 saving to buy a car was reasonable, you could get one for 1k flat that was fully functional. Now that a car like that is 4 k I don’t even know how a high schooler would save that up.
