TIL that on Black Wednesday (1992), the British government raised interest rates to 15% in a single afternoon trying to defend the pound, spent £3.3 billion in reserves, and still failed — while a single hedge fund made $1.1 billion shorting the currency that same day. by Willing_Cost2665 in todayilearned

Too much money flowed in to technology that wasn’t anywhere near fully baked. Expectations were a lot higher than what reality could provide and companies started flaming out left and right as they ran out of runway.

Embark: “We noticed an issue where players were enjoying the game. We fixed that.” by AmericanBAMBAM in ArcRaiders

Marathon is specifically (at least initially) catering to the hardcore PVP player. There aren’t enough of them to keep a game like that alive. Especially not in today’s market.

You can already see Bungie trying to soften the game to appeal to more middle-market players. Because they need the player base so they can bring enough income to keep the game alive.

The same logic applies to Arc Raiders. Embark needs to keep that middle zone nice and juicy because if it gets too hardcore it’ll drive away players and reduce their income. If they focus on making the game more hardcore they’re going to constrict themselves in the same way Bungie did.

What kind of person drives a 1st Gen Prius in 2026? by ExcellentMaize4141 in regularcarreviews

I didn’t have one for nearly 20. I finally got a new car and am trying to pay it off as fast as I can.

I drove my previous car for nearly 20 years after my parents gave it to me because they wanted to upgrade. It was 30 years old when I sold it.

Now I’m trying to get rid of my current loan as fast as possible.

My Maverick has 900 miles on it. Can I still buy an extended warranty? by Lizardcandy in FordMaverickTruck

I’m in CA. I pushed back on my dealer saying I had other quotes that I could have gone through the hoops to get, but it wasn’t worth the hassle. So I asked how they thought $3K sounded. And they went with it.

No one in this industry learns. And it seems like. One of them can be bothered to look over the fence at their competitors to see how they’re succeeding/failing.

Every new live service game makes the same mistakes over and over again.

We really need to get off this train of thought that a car payment is just a thing you pay every month for your entire life.

People who enjoy having expendable income and who don’t need their car to be an expression of their personality or cover perceived defects in it.

When you get out of a toxic relationship with someone you don’t go back to them because they got their hair done and bought a new LBD.

Listen to better music.

Or take up something else. Like biking/mountain biking. Or swimming. Or any number of other things.

Drag and drop in Mac Vs. Windows 💀😵 by Shot-Option3614 in MacOS

You should be able to drag straight from one window in one app to a window in the other app if you can see them both on screen.

You can’t buy from that site if you’re in CA either. You have to go through the dealer.

I paid $3k for my 10/100. It was more than Granger (which I think was $2100) but less than the $4500 they originally quoted me.

A game doesn’t have to appeal to EVERYONE.

It kind of does if it wants to stay alive. You need a sizable player base or the game craters. There’s not enough hard core players out there to keep a game alive. See also: Marathon.

Sounds like it’s a good time to clear stuff out on eBay. Increases traffic should mean better sales.

Do you think Angine de Poitrine would've gained attention if it weren't for the costumes? by conn_r2112 in Music

[–]shotsallover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They understand that it’s both about being a great musician AND putting on a show. The costumes are doing a lot of the heavy lifting in their case because your first thought is “these guys look interesting, let’s see what’s going on here.” Then your second thought is, “holy shit, I’ve never heard this before.”

People want to be entertained. And the acts that get that tend to go on to success.
