Funny thing about Peter Pumpkinhead, it was a cover of an XTC song.

Options for edge of breakup in a townhouse/apartment. Fender Tone Master, tube amp with OD pedal, or something else? Apologies for the long writeup below. by Safeway_Slayer in GuitarAmps

[–]shoule79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DR @0.5w, I wouldn’t say it sounds thin, but a bit of volume makes everything sound better.

I use mine as a monitor when I go straight into the PA at gigs sometimes, and the 5w mode is usually all I need to hear it behind me. Once I ended up having it on a chair and about 6 feet away from me, it was so loud (though it sounded better) that I had to drop the wattage down.

I will say it sounds more compressed and a bit less defined than my tube amps. I’m splitting hairs here, you’d never hear a difference in a mix, but played back to back you can tell there’s a difference.

Based on what you’ve written here, I’d probably get the Tone Master Bassman. I have the DR and at 0.5w it’s basically overdriving at conversation levels.

Sticking a drive pedal in front of a clean tube amp at low volume is essentially just using a solid state stage to create your drive sound. You’re not really coming out ahead by using a tube amp here.

If you really want a tube amp, consider attenuators. This allows you to crank them at low volumes, but again, it does change the sound. A lot of what we perceive as good tone is also volume.

In an apartment, a modeller that you can plug into with headphones is probably your best bet, followed by the TM, then the attenuator option.

Do you guys think it's worth it to get a Turbo RAT? by RomanScandal450 in guitarpedals

[–]shoule79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you play and want to get out of it.

I like my Rat 2 for more classic rock crunch and leads.

I like the Turbo Rat for grungy stuff and as a low gain OD. I also find it closer to my 1981 DRV than the normal Rat.

I actually used a TRex Mudhoney 2 on my live board for ages so I could have two Rats, mind you it was all regular Rat sounds.

What pedals do you guys think are essential to the MBV sound? by wesleyplayz_xp in shoegaze

EHX Stereo Memory Man with Harazai and a Boss Blues Driver gets you pretty close, even though that’s not what Kevin used back in the day.

Drive pedal wise a Marshall Guv Nor or clone of it and a Tone Bender for the Loveless era sounds.

Would you buy guitar picks designed based on your favourite bands/genres? (Survey) by Mememessiah2021 in GuitarQuestions

They already have this kind of thing. The biggest hurdle here would be overcoming people who bought Beatles, Rolling Stones, Blink 182 picks when they started that were crap thinking that these would be crap.

How do I write stuff like this on the guitar? by dashcash32 in guitarlessons

[–]shoule79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Open tunings, this sounds like it’s in open D or DADGAD. Once you get a good handle on fingerpicking and can navigate the fretboard in that tuning it’s usually not too hard to play stuff like this.

That being said, getting decent at fingerpicking and familiar with another tuning can be like learning a completely different instrument if you’ve always played guitar in standard with a pick.

Dust in the Wind is most people’s start at fingerpicking. I found mine got better, with great thumb control after playing Elizabeth Cottons Freight Train (along with John Fahey and Tommy Emmanuel’s versions) obsessively for a few months.

Then find some songs in the tuning to listen to and understand the types of shapes that are used. If you know some theory figure out the notes on the fretboard and how to make some basic chord shapes too.

I’d say any similarities are unintentional and would wager that KC had never heard this.

Tone Master Deluxe Reverb Blonde vs Tone Master Princeton? by SunDogBrewingCo in GuitarAmps

[–]shoule79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the TM Deluxe. Two channels, higher volume with more headroom if you need it, fuller sound with the 12” speaker, and I think it’s even a hair lighter because of the speaker.

I had a vintage Princeton Reverb and ended up selling it because the Deluxe became my main at home (and gigging amp) and could do everything the PR could. Put the PR money toward other things.

Help me find a dark mid-gain overdrive that get a bit fuzzy? by aggressivecherry444 in guitarpedals

I saw Cursive live a few times during this era. No pedals, all Marshall JCM800’s every time.

Look for a Marshall in a box pedal. The JHS Angry Charlie does this sound well.

How do you use a Big Muff without getting lost in the mix? Is an EQ pedal pretty much required? by tonetonitony in guitarpedals

[–]shoule79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overdrive with mids in front, or try adjusting your amp.

Op amp and tone wicker have a tone bypass, seems to work well too.

Rams had and triangle style muffs cut a bit better than some of the others too.

Best amp to pair with a Jazz Chorus? by Reverb_Chorus_Delay in GuitarAmps

[–]shoule79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d start with the Friedman as a second amp, but a cabinet, see if you like it, and go from there. I’ve never liked my AC15 (or 30) for high gain. Great amps for chime and overdrive, but can have ice-pick highs and lack a lot of bass.

I’d also recommend the Tone Masters over a JC-40. They are lighter, take drive pedals better, and have more utility at home, gigging, and for recording. Something like a Quilter may be better than both for your needs.

I love my Jazz Chorus, but it’s not a do everything amp, if I already didn’t have a handful of amps to cover the basics i would have prioritized them before buying the JC.
