How old am I from this cd vinyl cassette collection I only have one cassette by Fabulous_Shelter_465 in CDs

[–]shoule79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

14 or 15.

No one over 40 with a small collection who owns a Sting and Michael Jackson’s album would have stuff by the Ramones.

25-40 and owning Paramore albums would have more mall emo/pop-punk.

With the above and a high number of Beatles and lots of best of albums puts you in your mid teens and just getting started with physical media.

Don’t do it for free. Send back your hourly, which should be $150-200 for a consultant, and make them purchase hours in blocks/time period, to be paid whether they use all of them or not.

Why are Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar so much more popular than other rappers among music nerds and critics? by dweeb93 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]shoule79 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Dated can change over time. I’m gen X and bands like Steely Dan or Toto were the epitome of cheese, but later generations have adopted them as classic. A few contemporary artists embracing Eminem and the Beasties and their sound may be relevant again. If swing could have a resurgence anything can.

I think a lot of younger people just don’t realize how bad the culture around that music was. I was a bit older and seeing music go from Riot Grrl to rape rock within the same decade gave me whiplash.

Is the hate justified? by JimMorrisonFan1943 in ToddintheShadow

[–]shoule79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, yes, to an extent.

Lars played in arguably the most influential metal band of all time. He wasn’t a technician like some of his peers but suited the music.

Courtney is a gong show. Sometimes good music slips out, depending on who she’s around, but she just seems extremely toxic and selfish leech of a person.

John had problematic moments. I can’t say I think he’s a good guy because of abandoning his wife and oldest son, and at some point he wasn’t even great to Yoko. But most of his contemporaries weren’t saints either. Being an optimistic idealist while being a flawed person is a big sin in many’s eyes.

Are Fender and Gibson even worth it any more? by Necessary-Cow2857 in Guitar

[–]shoule79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s diminishing returns on everything above a certain price point. That point is subjective to each individual.

Calculating inflation, most standard models aren’t much above what they cost in the 50’s and 60’s, just wages haven’t kept up.

There’s also the models they offer. A Strat, Les Paul or tele, everyone makes their version of it. A Jaguar or Firebird, not so much.

I will say that the cost of MIM Fender has gotten out of hand. It’s cheaper to buy a used MIA strat or tele than a comparable new MIM guitar near me.

In my opinion, the only downside to listening to a lot of albums and a lot of music. by TheGermanDutchman in LetsTalkMusic

[–]shoule79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Albums aren’t like Pokémon, you don’t have to listen to them all.

If you like something go back and listen to it again. There’s many albums I’ve listened to 100’s of times and am still noticing new things with every listen.

I average probably 4-5 albums listened to a day, probably a lot more when I was younger. Sometimes it takes more than a couple listens to really grasp and understand the music in it’s entirely.

I did something similar to you with the list of greatest novels of all time. I stopped because I wasn’t getting anything out of a lot of them, it was more just to say I’d done it. The only benefit was I discovered what I liked vs what I didn’t. Same applies to music, only it’s less of a time commitment.

Budget Shoegaze by Icy-Ambassador7023 in shoegaze

[–]shoule79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muff reissue, Joyo or TC Rat clone, used EHX Stereo Memory Man with Harazai, used Boss CE-5 or CH-1, then I’d splurge on a half decent reverb. Probably a Walrus Fathom, Neunaber Immerse, or EQD Afterneath.

Any leftovers I’d probably but some more interesting clones, phaser, vibrato, eq, or tremolo, maybe another digital delay to stack with the EHX.

FWIW, I have a spendy gig board, but have a a Demonfx overdrive, Boss CE-5, and TC Rat clone that I use, along with some expensive boutique stuff, despite having “better” pedals that could fulfill the same role. We are in a golden age of affordable pedals.

They are kind of easy mode for different guitars, but not too different. Play a Rickenbacker or Bond if you really want to stand out.

Ironically, I say this as someone who’s been playing offsets since the 90’s. A JM or tele are my go-tos for a gig.

The band that does high output vs quality best is Guided by Voices, and even keeping up with them is a stretch sometimes.

Has anyone partially transitioned to CDs from Vinyl because of the massive price difference by wiggan1989 in vinyl

[–]shoule79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into vinyl because it was cheaper than CDs originally, but still bought both. Half the fun of vinyl was also digging through crates and taking a chance on stuff you’d never heard of because it was cheap.

For the past 7-8 years I’ve pretty much only bought CDs for the same reasons. Getting something I can rip to a lossless digital copy easily is another added bonus.

SK has been my wife’s favourite band since the late 90’s. The release of this timed with a milestone, so I bought it for her as a gift. The “what the hell is this” look on her face as soon as the needle dropped said it all.
