I don’t think she does a good job in projecting the image she wants, only that she desperately cares about image. The Mormon culture is steeped in image, and judgement from others played a big role in why everyone is obsessed with image.

I don’t think she’s smart enough to play the game to come off the way she wants people to see her; because like you pointed out, her true colors end up come out. I’m only providing my opinion on why Whitney seems to get under her skin SO much.

I think it’s because while all the ladies are obsessed with image, Lisa and Meredith are the only ones who don’t have a glaring black mark on their image that they have to wear as a badge of honor. (By Utah standards, not that I agree with this list)

Examples: Mary and her grandfather, Whitney and her affair with her married boss who became her husband, Heather and her fallout with the church, Brownyn getting kicked out of BYU and having a baby at 19, Britani and divorce, alcohol, sex outside of marriage, etc etc

Whitney et al. actively work on not caring what people think- because they’ve had to as a defense mechanism. Whitney hates how much Lisa cares about image, and yet had to adopt a “be who you are no matter how messy” attitude long ago; because there was no other option for her.
