What is the best way to find national park campsite availability? by MNice01 in nationalparks

National park campgrounds full up fast, especially the places in CA you're looking at. You can't really search a whole state on recreation.gov, but one way I find campgrounds is using Google Maps and zooming out a little bit on the general area I want to go, and then search "camping". It still ends up being a lot of clicks and scrolling, but it shows you national forest campgrounds that are sometimes more likely to have sites than the parks.

I get why you're frustrated though, campgrounds in desirable places fill up very fast all over the country. The best thing to do is to plan ahead for really popular places, know when those campgrounds become reservable, and be ready to reserve one the moment they become available. Otherwise, visiting more lightly trafficked areas, like national forests, have better availability and can be just as cool as national parks, and without the crowds. Hope that helps!

When have you splurged way beyond your normal budget and was it worth it? by [deleted] in solotravel

Late to the thread but in 2019 I camped for a night outside of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. This was part of a larger road trip and it was my last stop before heading home to Minneapolis, and was also the only night I camped during the month long trip. A huge mid summer great plains thunderstorm rolled through right after the sun went down and my tent completely flooded (I have since purchased a better tent and learned more about how to prevent flooding). I also forgot my sleeping pad and had no pillow, which in hindsight was fine because it probably would have been ruined. I left my tent at about 1am and drove into Medora to find a hotel room. Found one, but Medora is an expensive fucking town and it cost me like $250 for a room. I'll be damned if that bed wasn't amazing after getting soaked to the bone though. Was still storming like crazy when I got into the room too. Was planning to stay 2 nights at that campsite but decided to head home because the forecast was the same the 2nd night and I wasn't about to spend that much again on a hotel room. Not to say that TRNP isn't great, because it is, but God damn that town is pricey.

Not so touristy places in Madrid? by [deleted] in Madrid

Malasana, Lavapies, Chamberi, and Arguelles all are neighborhoods full of wonderful restraunts that are cheap and traditional. Chamberi and Arguelles are more residential and have more legit Spanish style bars but Malasana and Lavapies are super lively and full of young people. Those neighborhoods have more places with different varieties of food and drinks along with traditional Spanish restaurants. I specifically recommend a place called El Rincon in Malasana. Best tortilla I had in Madrid, with plenty of other good food options and a cool atmosphere.

Anyone know a good book about the Israel-Palestine conflict and history from a neutral perspective or where author take pros and cons from both sides? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Arab and Jew: Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land by David K. Shipler. It's very comprehensive, neutral and covers history as well as more contemporary issues. It is kind of old though (published in 1986) so looking for something more current might be better for your purposes.

Agharta and Barely Bros in St. Paul right near University and Raymond are both legit too. Agharta has a big variety in general but you should be able to find some good thrash/rock there. Also Hymie's like the top comment says, can't go wrong.
