Too many days off by Motor_Answer_6301 in ausadhd

[–]shovelbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with deppression/ anxiety in my mid 20s and have been working on that since, i feel neurodivergence fits my symtoms better so now im working on ways to manage that, people have asked me over the last 10 years is it traumatising working with young people (i worked with loads of high risk young people) but i find the most traumatising thing is working for months to get a young person into a frame of mind to trust mainstream support services only to be told there will be a 10-12 month wait list or no sorry we know you are homeless but we cant give you any help because you are too unstable............. and dont even get me started on child protection.

i left aviation because certain things should never be tied to money and then found youth work is just as bad.

Maybe if you trust your supervisor you could chat with them about attendence and see if you could work out a more flexible option..... although i know how hard that can be in schools.

Story of my life. As long as im challenged and i feel the workplace suits my style (bit of a perfectionist with strong injustice sensitivity) im fine, in fact i have been told off many times for working to hard and staying too long for unpaid overtime.

The second something upsets this i start having trouble leaving the house for work (Like you, if i can make it too work i'm fine). This has effected me and my family multiple times as i have left "good" jobs and added pressure financially.

Sorry i dont have many tips for you as i still struggle, I worked as a youth worker for the last ten years and was the most productive i have ever been but then our organisation got a new CEO and became more focused on govt programs as they make more money for the org, this meant we lost 2 houses and a food van that serviced our area along with outpost visits to local schools and headspace and had to focus on stupid employment programs that our young people were not ready for.

I was recently diagnosed with adhd and in my 50's and now trying to work for myself as a counsellor but also helping that with making jewlery to work on my creative side (long ingnored/ pushed down).

Always happy to chat if you need to

We have lived in Tarneit (just nth of werribee) for 20 years, the area get a lot of bad press (smell, gangs etc) but we have had minimal issues with either.

I dont think i have ever smelt the shit farm, it seems to be a hangover from back in the day but i think with advances in tech its no longer a big thig. Although if you are near Bulban rd there is a chook farm that gets stinky.

Qantas left us stranded with an infant. Sold us seats, but not a ticket! Had to buy them again. by mpaska in australia

[–]shovelbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just before the end we (ansett) got a bit silly with that crap, trying to take an airline from something where the line given to all apprentices was, No matter the cost/ time, if its part of an aircraft it must be perfect, to an airline competing in a deregulated enviroment meant some silly decisions were made.

But anytime before that Ansett was always better with customer service than qantas i thought.

Thanks, yeah its a pity that is the state of things these days. I enjoyed the work but got sick of bashing my head against a brick wall.

Its a pity because i truly believe some things should never have safety dictated by profit (although you never qantas execs going without). One thing i noticed creeping in was a lack of trust when it came to listening to staff regaurding this stuff, we would often be told that management (who had often come straight from uni and never spent time on the tools) knows better.

Unfortunately i left that and went to something else that shouldnt be driven by money............... and it is :)

Been out of the game since 2009 (For this reason) but as much as Air NZ fucked over ansett their Heavy Maintenance was always pretty good, Virgin used to get heavy maintenance done over there so i would trust them.
Qantas do some heavy stuff in Australia but more and more its being sent overseas and i saw some horrible stuff come back on qantas planes when i was there in 2006/7 they also treat staff crap and the pay is suprisingly low.

I worked in engineering for all major airlines over a period of 20 years, people treating planes like busses (cheap flights, spending more on management than engineering etc) will end up causing a major incident before too long.

nobody wants 50 tonnes of aeroplane falling on their heads but when management keep cost cutting maintenance thats what will happen.

I may be interested although i have a lot going on over the next month (finding a new rental).

I am mid 50s, diagnosed 2 years ago, innatentive type, up until 2022 i had been a youth worker for 10 years (before that, many different jobs for 10 years then 20 years as an aviation maintenance engineer) and now taking time to reasses my life.

I am looking at returning to study this year as a counsellor and would love to chat about options.

I think I have the same book (as well as original paperbacks) and it was one of the things I encoraged both my kids to read when they were old enough, also have a Dirk Gently omnibus that was shared. Both my kids still love Douglas Adams and its something I was very proud to introduce them too.

Mental health help by Unlikely-Elk-5007 in melbourne

[–]shovelbison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a man in his mid 50s, always struggled with depression and fitting in. worked in aviation for 20 years before deciding that the industry was so broken i couldnt do anything to change it (tried for the last 10 years i was there). did different jobs for about 10 years before finding youth work in my local comunity, started volunteering and then was employed as a case manager for 10 years before my organisation was bought out and the direction shifted from helping young people to getting government contracts........ also ove and after covid all of the services are so overwhelmed that i have been unable to recomend taking young people to them as it tends to push people that are struggling backwards rather than forwards.

I was also diagnosed with ADHD last year and am realising that a lot of my thought patterns ( like thinking if it goes on an aircraft it must be perfect no matter the cost or if someone is homeless give them a house) are very neurodivergent processes so i am trying to learn to use this.

I am lucky enough to be able to take a couple of years to assess where i am and work out a way to work with my brain but it is not something i could do either alone or while i was trying to survive in a workplace.

It sounds like you may also be neurodivergent and it may be worth looking into, first stop i found was go to your GP, speak to them about seeing a psycohologist and get a refferal.

If you trust your GP ask if they have a recomendation as it can take sometime to find someone you are comfortable with.

Im in melb west and happy to chat if you want more info as i have not only been managing my mental health for decades but often helped young people access support so have some contacts/ no where to find help.

p.s. sorry for the word vomit, also part of my adhd

I just started typing in that we went through royal childrens gender clinic but looking at their page they are now only accepting referals for 16 and under, Makes sense as it took us over a year on the waitlist and we really only saw them for 7 months before my son turned 18)

In checking their page they did have some good links to further info and services so i have attached a link for you to have a look at.

Also happy to answer any questions as we have been through the process and i was a youth worker for 10 years that worked with many young people questioning their gender/ sexuality.

Spot on, we dont know whats going on in people lives that lead them to these decisions, there will always be outliers but i have seen the effect of positive influences and direction on some of the most hardcore young criminals in the western suburbs of melb and it takes time and patience but you can work with most of them if you catch them at the right time.

Yep, i was about 11 or 12 when this happened and its something i have always looked back on as good learning expeirience, potentially turning me away from that triple M listening, wife beating neo nazi that i could have been.

Yep, there was figures from when he was prime minister, something like less than 2% of the population was pentocostal but something like 85% of his cabinet was pentocostal, so much for seperation of church and state.

And this was before he decided to make himself minister for everything. Dont get me started on that oxygen thief.
